Transfer Rumour Matt Grimes (2 Viewers)

One thing I think is we’ll see a lot better from him when we’re playing wingers. No one in that team makes the runs that you see Grimes picking out in his highlight vids. Thought it was noticeable that the first effective forward ball he played was to EMC.

So are you saying I was wrong or are you just wording it well?
I’m really lost now? I don’t know what I was meant to be agreeing or disagreeing with 🤣

That mesg was same day as we were talking about whether Matt would sign before Swansea. Irrelevant in the long term.

I agree and haven’t put down us getting playoffs with Lampard?

I noticed him taking positions today the CBs couldn’t/wouldnt get to him, I assume at Swansea they could but ours either don’t think they can make the pass or aren’t used to having a midfielder happy to take it under pressure.
I noticed that as well. Think if you think about it he often played in that pocket for Swansea and arguably had better ball players like Darling there.

Spot on, you can tell he doesn’t like giving the ball away, doubt you’ll see him just lumping balls up to a front 2 , EMC will love him,

Im not allowed to mention it but Kitching’s pass completion was 65% today and Thomas’ 71%. We need much better from them really or he needs to come a lot shorter to make the pass easy for them.

Maybe but feel there is an instruction for the Centre backs in the back five to hit it long to help relieve pressure.

Obviously numbers would be skewed by this as it’s kinda half luck at that point putting the balls up for Simms.

Think in a back two where we seek to control the game those numbers will increase

He had to play a lot deeper today as he had Eccles next to him as well, Lampard said after the QPR game he’s asking him to play a lot deeper than he’d want, that was a tough game for him today but he’s class, he’ll only get better

I don't dispute that, it's not me criticizing him. Not sure Eccles has anything to do with it by the way.

1 in 3 passes astray or 1 in 4 is more than just hitting long balls. Though the long ball stats are even worse. Thomas 20% and Kitching 9%, compared to Dovin 50% and Lats 57%

So you don't know when your message should have been but you know you were right 😂😂😂

He signed about a week ago.

Fair play on the stats, I’d be curious to know what the stats were last year when playing in a back two. But I don’t disagree feel we need a real ball playing CB.

Darling on a free would be a good pick up

I’m really lost now mate 🤣.

What are you saying we were arguing about. If it’s grimes we signed him before Swansea?

If it’s Lampard I agree with you and have agreed with this point throughout?

Either way it’s all good and the club is doing well. Let’s hope we continue

I think the way we set up doesn’t help them or Grimes. The gap to the forwards was a joke at times today and why I didn’t agree with taking a striker off, it just left us lumping it in Simms general direction then setting up the other 9 outfield players on the edge of our box waiting for Bannan to put it back in. Once we got EMC on and an actual midfielder not hiding from the game in Allen we looked much better.

i was replying to someone saying grimes should be getting us up the pitch higher, its Easier with torp or when sheaf will be next to nim, he wins the ball and gives it to them, Eccles was sitting just as deep as grimes,we couldn’t get out 👍

Problem was we were getting exposed on the flanks so think it was a more defence move to double on the wings.

Attack was impacted but the 5-4-1 has allowed us to control games in the past. But I am very excited to get back to the 4-2-3-1/4-3-3. It’ll be much better for us imo

Sick of reading about Bannan today. Even worse that a worrying lot of people can’t even spell it right.

Not since Gyokeres left IMO. Simms has many talents but without someone who can hold the ball up that end and a midfield willing to join him it just ends up backs to the wall like today. TBH since L1 I’m not a fan of it at all.

That’s fair, I don’t really like the approach as feel the pressure causes you to break at some point. Would rather if we were trying to be defensive to just slow the game down with sideways possession

A post on the same day saying how I wasn’t trying to argue just discuss the thoughts you put out.

Look I’ll level with you I struggle with processing information so if I’ve upset you, I apologise.
I don't have a problem with being wrong. Show me where and I'll hold my hands up.

Celebrating the win tonight. Absolutely trashed. Without auto correct I'd make even less sense 😁

I think it might be the same with Sheaf as he will also sits equally deep. I think the main thing is to learn to give and trust Grimes with the ball, even in tight spaces. Just like Wednesday trust Bannon. Even alongside Torp, Grimes didn't really impact the game against QPR. Yes he looked neat on the ball but didn't have a lot of influence. But it is very early days. He is a good player. and it is probably more about team mates learning about him rather than him learning about them.

I am expecting more, decent so far but would like to see more of the forward passing that the reels before he signed show. Still a decent option of course.
I too am looking forward to seeing those passes pinged out to the wing by him, he did one out to EMC today which was a glimpse of what we saw on those videos, EMC got at their fullback and caused havoc

in the games he’s played he’s just been protecting our dodgy defence, you’ll see a different grimes next season with a bit of quality around him, liking him already, wants the ball and hardly ever gives it away exactly what we needed

Yeah you can tell he’s quality. Some of the little first time passes are excellent. Would be even better if his fellow midfielders showed for it occasionally.

I was surprised to see him today! Must have been blackballed out of the fellowship of the Ring😉

Grimes is a box to box midfielder being asked to sit deep in this formation...he clearly wont be as effective until his instructions are changed.
For what its worth, i though he did a decent, albeit unspectacular job today...i certainly don't remember him giving it away too often. Compare that to Eccles, who was almost anonymous.

Yes, but it can't be an instruction to them to do that otherwise we'll end up AAATB cos they won't want to affect their passing stats.
