We seem to be at the “better the devil you don’t know” point of the season already, where long-benched players seem to be the answer just because they haven’t shown themselves up recently.

No, I've long (as in way back into last season) stated that I don't rate Binks and our defensive record continues to support that view.

Kitching was fine last season and is frozen out but has he had that many bad games? Binks is a poor defender of the ball under pressure and positionally weak. I don’t really understand why Kitching has looked worse and he’s never had a run this season

Defence is the big problem: You can't keep leaking 2 a game. The combo of MVE-Thomas-Binks-D Silva with or without Lati clearly is not working. If you keep repeating the same thing, don't be surprised if you keep getting the same result. So the backline must change

The midfield is lacking creative cutting edge, in particular Sheaf (who seems nonplussed if the opposition pack the midfield and push up). And creative passing is not what we pay Eccles to do. Rudoni was by far the most creative midfielder against Cardiff and Torp provided additional edge when he came on. Playing Allen at the expense of any those four is an act of desperation

Dovin is the better stopper, Collins the better distributor: We are away so we need a stopper above all

Simms achieved more in his cameo than Bassettte in his 70 minutes or so. That was a fantastic turn to get the cross in for the penalty

Assume Frank will play 4-3-3 (and if so he is much more inflexible than Robins, who was fond of pulling a formation rabbit out of the hat)

Dovin
MVE - Kiching - Thomas - Bidwell (or Binks)
Torp - Sheaf - Rudoni
Tats - Simms - EMC

Tactically - get it to the wings; get the overlaps in; get the crosses in. We have two good wingers and the fastest right back in the division. Use them

Kitching over Binks I can get behind, as I know the former is capable of playing at a high level, even if he’s way too error prone for my liking. It’s people calling for Allen and Latibeaudiere to start which I find more puzzling.

edit: and BTA!

Allen and Lati would be the embarrassing last picks wouldn't they. I think it's more in desperation that people want Allen starting games

Everyone’s saying the same thing. It’s just a difference between Goblin attacking lineup which has the fullback wider and the “wide forward” in basically the 10 position along with one of the “8”s and the basic 433 which is how they nominally line up. In defence it’s 442 with Allen either at RW or SS basically.
I only want Allen in a midfield position. Doesn't have space or trickery to give us much in attack wether tucked in it out wide

I'd go:

Dovin
MVE Thomas Kitching Binks
Eccles Sheaf
Torp
Rudoni Simms EMC

- Going to be very physical which are the games Saka tends to struggle in
- Allows Rudoni & Torp to cut into the half-spaces on their stronger foot
- Binks to drop into a 3 in possession
- Hopefully we've worked on defensive shape all week

Wales U19s that is. He's not yet made a meaningful appearance for us, don't think he's the answer to anything right now.
If we were 3-0 up in the 90th minute and there was maybe 4 mins extra time he would probably get a run out from the bench.😁

Unless you’re playing him in a holding role that’s where he’s going to be when attacking. And I wouldn’t play him holding.

His USP is his movement and running. He doesn’t need tricks.

Am I going mad, why are people posting 3241 and 442 lineups :ROFLMAO:

It's a 433.
If you watch the games it's not

on saturday when we had the ball we set up like this:

Collins

Thomas-Binks-JDS
Sheaf-Eccles
MVE-Saka-Simms-Rudi-EMC

Off the ball we would try to filter back into:

Collins
MVE-Thomas-Binks-JDS
Saka-Sheaf-Eccles-EMC
Simms-Rudi

If you watch the game or read the match thread you will see lots of people commenting on JDS not pushing up at all and Rudi being really high and on the left.

No I'd have him either side of a holding player. But I do expect him to come back and defend more than a wide forward would.

I think you are seriously overestimating how narrow wide players will play. They will still be used to stretch the pitch like emc and saka did on Saturday at times

If anything Dasilva was pushing into central midfield like Rico Lewis and TAA does.

We don’t know that. I just think when players are so shit right now and young bright spark with no fear can shine. Lampard likes to give youth players a chance so if he’s good enough and impresses hopefully he gets his chance.

The team is struggling - its madness to throw in players who have zero experience at this level

One of Kitching's problems is his hotheadedness.

Whether there are off-field problems that have meant he barely gets a look in, who knows

He's also incredibly slow and cannot complete a forward pass.
Thomas is a better defender but again his passing is shocking.
Binks not so good at the defensive part but at least he can make a forward pass and creates things going forward.
MVE has lost is confidence and seems to only pass backwards, scared to take his man on.
JDS constantly out of position. So many goals have come from his side recently.
Our defence is a right mess, not helped by the keeper situation.

It’s why I think Binks could work at LB in the system. I’d be in favour of our defensive shape being

Thomas Kitching
Sheaf Binks

Centre backs pulled slightly wider to cover the channels, if Kitching got dragged across to LB then Binks could tuck into CB temporarily.

Spot on, our best back four is mve kitching thomas and bidwell, did well last season, give them a run of games, its not like we can defend any worse,
