So, i actually need advice! Long story short, I've have to give up training martial arts as i've fucked my hip up and the risk of injury is starting to become a bit of a problem with work, gutted :(
I'm thinking of joining a cricket team, my mate plays locally at a very low level on a sunday and i'm sure i could go along with him if i wanted. Love watching cricket and only stopped playing as a kid because i didn't have the right temperament at the time. Really not sure what sort of gear i'd need though? I've got some white jeans and a white shirt i could use (jokes) Would i need to get the whole lot of kit, pads etc? Don't wanna turn up looking rag bag, but don't want to turn up with loads of swanky gear only to realise that i can't really play cricket and look a prize twat. Some gear is so expensive, how would i pick the right bat?
Getting old is shit, but the idea of playing cricket every sunday, team mates, dressing room piss takes, seems like a good idea?

Buy the whites but most teams will have a set of all the other equipment, I’d definitely purchase a box. If you find you’re pretty good I’d go on line and buy a bat not an owl. Lots of good equipment at good prices on Facebook marketplace or eBay if you find you’d like your own pads and gloves. Also if you have some money a good pair of cricket shoes is a must to avoid broken nails when the ball smashes into them

Why not give it a try. Lots of clubs are having pre season net practice at the minute. Get a box or borrow one and wear an extra pair of pants so that you're not passing stuff around for the first couple of times!
The club I play for have had a couple of blokes in their 40's start playing after packing up football and they really enjoy it. Thy aren't the best but just enjoy playing and being in a team sport.
Cricket can be heavy on your hips both batting and bowling so depending on what injuries you have it may or not be for you. I wouldn't spunk loads on kit to start with just to see how you go with a couple of net sessions first.
I have a bit of arthritis in my hip and cycling help a lot with it and has extended my cricket playing days a lot. Again depends on what your issue is though.

In all seriousness Greggs, have you considered doing some boxing circuits as you like your combat sports?
General fitness and bag and pad work, less strenuous on the hips.

Get a set of whites and a box and you're good to go. Most teams will have spare pads/bats/gloves etc. Then if you enjoy it, you can pick up bits at a time.

Gutted that I might be struggling to play much this year

I need the competitive side of things to keep me interested mate. Also tend to find boxing gyms a bit cliquey. Thanks though mate

Great advice. I get hip and knee pain when twisting in and out of roundhouse kicks :(

Never mind all that cobblers. Get on your arse and do a bit of fishing now that the football is about to finish and the nice weather is here. 👍

I live next to my village cricket club… I don’t play but I do go and watch and have a few beers. The blokes who play love it and have a right crack. All ages and abilities. I can’t spare the time it takes but if you can I strongly recommend it. Time to hang the Owl up and try something new! 40…..old he says… pffffff

Table tennis maybe? It's not the most physical of sports and when I played it a few years back there was loads of people on their 60s who were amazing and hardly moved. It's also quite social and there are quitea few leagues to suit all levels of ability. Up front investment would be small as a starters bat is about £20. As you get better you might want to invest in a bespoke bat to suit your style of play defensive, attacking etc.

OAPs are cheating fuckers though, sly. Never trust them at table tennis.

Depends how fit you are, I'm 35 and play weekley 7 a side leagues, and intend to still be doing it at 40 as lots of the players in the leagues are around 40 and older.

You could try the Walking Rugby up at the Butts. To be fair, it's more glacial than walking, but dead easy on the joints.

Following on from this, my club - Offchurch are having a bit of a recruitment drive at the minute.

Obviously I'm biased, but its a lovely setting, and a real family feel to the club. We play Sunday friendlies, so nothing too serious, and are looking at having the odd midweek 20/20 too this year, as well as our annual appearance in the Knockout Cup.

Nets are starting on Tuesday (12th) at 6:30, so if anyone is interested, come along, or DM me for more info.

Quick update, got my first game next week. Still not found out if I'm good at Cricket or not, I guess time will tell ;)

Was actually just thinking about this thread this morning as I observed my expanding waistline.
The training from home experiment hasn't worked, rejoining a gym as soon as I get back to Cov this evening!

Mate, it's the fucking sugar! I'm of slim build and all the weight i get goes to my gut, i look like a worm that's swallowed a golf ball sometimes. Cut sugar from my diet recently and i've noticed a pretty good improvement :)

Yeah, bit of a sugar addict myself. Going to try and sort the diet in conjunction with returning to the gym.
Been appalling since lockdown

12th man on Sunday, but i suppose its better than being 13th or 14th man. Gives me a chance to sneak off and smoke some devils lettuce in the bushes too.

Why don't you take up drinking (as in serious drinking) you could meet other like minded middleaged fellows every Sunday in Spoons from 10am, you all turn up, looking like you havnt washed, then talk total bollocks for a few hours, and take the piss out of all the other punters.
And no need to splash out on sports gear you'll only ever use once!!!

See you next week!
