A year ago today we won 2-0 at Southend (as a reminder to any who have forgotten how the quality of opposition has changed within 12 months!)
it was the first time I have struggled (when sober) to open a pub door (due to the gale blowing along Southend sea front)!!

Unquestionably it’s going to be a tough game, especially as you imagine confidence within the squad isn’t particularly high. Combine that with a likely defensive set up from MR and Shipley at LWB and it could be a difficult night.

I wouldn’t rule us out though. Hamer/COH/James/DaCosta have strong games and we don’t do anything stupid at the back, then we have a chance.

One thing is certain; if we lose this forum is going to be horrible. They’ll be agendas (subtle or otherwise) all over the place, with MR out being top of that list, and a witch hunt for players to blame it all on.

It’s emotive, we all feel pissed off, but a loss doesn’t mean the season is over

Anyway, I think we’ll sneak a 1-0, it’s about time one of Ostigard’s headers went in.

We have to remember it is just one game, a game against the league leaders who are favourites to win most of their games. We play tonight then move on, already I see fans, so called, pointing out Shipley possibly at LWB. if he plays. We get any result tonight will do me we have played them twice this season and not lost and others below them have them coming up too. We are in a one game at a time situation, a loss tonight doesn’t relegate us or a win make us safe.

Can sort of understand why you'd choose Biamou over Gyokeres when we're going one up front, but not when we're going two up.

What about tomorrow when we play Norwich?

Agree with the thrust of what you're saying but they did beat us pretty comprehensively 2nd time in the cup due to the usual individual errors etc.

Tomorrow's game is essentially Premier League vs League One again & we'd have killed to be in this position even just a year ago. I think we could get something but definitely not cause for a meltdown even if we're soundly beaten.

These run of games aren't what will define our season & whilst I share others' concerns over recent results & particularly performances we need to try & keep some perspective. There's still a long, long way to go. If we're in the bottom 3 at the end of March then it's time to start worrying.

we're probably going to concede so we may as well try and score a goal, even if it makes us weaker at the back.

our current plan is clearly not working, need a change

Marosi

Dacosta
Osti
Fadz
Hyam
Shipley?

Hamer (more advanced)
James
Sheaf

Walker
Gyok

Robins wont do the above though

Will be Baimou up top and O'Hare in, for Gyok and Sheaf I imagine.

God knows who at LB.

We are supposed to be able to relax in these games as we will be “beating the shit around us” or Wycombe as it’s called now. Anyway I suggest some schoolyard football role play to keep things interesting. They can be Coventry City and we can be Sutton Utd

Think Wilson could be back in , no choice but Shipley at left wing back , fadz will be in for ostigard based on Saturday , rose distribution is very good and no one else can play left CB apart from Hyam think Allen did enough to keep his place and then Walker with o’hare behind him , that has to be our strongest 11

I don't think you can afford to lose Osti's aerial threat. Our main threat is likely to come from set pieces, so I'd keep him in based on that alone/ Fadz may be found a place for that aspect too, although I'm not sure how I'd accommodate him.

What I'd go with (assuming Walker isn't fit enough to start):

Wilson
Pask Rose Østigård Hyam Dacosta
Hamer James Sheaf
O'Hare
Gyökeres

What I expect:

Maroši
Dacosta Rose McFadzean Hyam Shipley
Hamer James Allen
O'Hare
Biamou

I agree with ostigard these but he has yet to score a clean goal , he has had several opportunities but none scored , Rotherham aside but that was defected

Agreed - but he set up Kelly's winner at Wycombe with a back post header, hit the bar more than once, and had a few cleared off the line. If he plays for the rest of the season, I'd reckon on him bagging at least a couple more, plus he frees up the other players (like Fadz) at set pieces, as teams try (and often fail) to stop him getting on the end of it.

Can't believe seeing comments also like no choice but to play Shipley at LWB earlier...????!!!!

Dacosta can play there and has before and whats more and what I have stated previously we can and given injuries/players missing should play 4 at the back for this and play a 4-3-3 formation - playing Shipley and keeping with wing backs we are on a hiding to nothing.

without sounding too much like Grendel we need to go compact 4-3-3 and grind out a result in this one either a point or a smash n grab winner!
If we go open with wingbacks there three behind Pukki will destroy us!......they still might even with James, Hamer & Sheaf but we will stand a better chance against them.

Why would you play more players out of position than you need to

None of us have ever seen Da Costa play left back and just because he might have played there previously doesn't necessarily make him a good fit for us there. It strikes me that if we play him on the left he will lose much of his effectiveness, which means we end up weakening ourselves in both full back positions rather than in just the one. I would therefore keep Da Costa on the right. He also strikes me as better going forward than in defence, and as such is more of a natural wing back rather than full back which poses further problems if we want him to play in a back 4. Not saying you are necessarily wrong about the formation, and I definitely worry about Shipley playing LWB given his recent form and low confidence, but with the players available to him I will be very surprised if MR changes our defensive set up for this game.

I asked you this yesterday but you may have missed it.
What specifically about Norwich makes you think they'd relish playing vs wing-backs?
We changed to a wing-back system specifically for the match vs them earlier in the season.

I wouldn’t play DaCosta LWB, while he may be versatile it would nullify his attacking ability in my view. It would also mean Pask at RWB which would also mitigate our outlet on that side, so we’d have no outlets in what will likely be a negative set up anyway.

Shipley LWB isn’t ideal but under usual circumstances may not be as much of a disaster as some predict; he’s left footed, would be disciplined and on on form can be technically decent. Unfortunately he’s a big confidence player and so while he’ll still be disciplined and left footed, his form is poor and technically he’s not been great. He’s still the best option though. Frustrating Reid is out, especially as he was playing in the first team so can’t be that much of a development signing.

Agree with that. My main concern over Shipley at wing-back is his lack of physicality & stamina, it's pretty much the most demanding role you can play.

My concern with Shipley as LWB is that the left side of midfield and the back three is also our weakest spot. McCallum is often left exposed and Shipley would be in trouble.

As a random aside, I came across a data scout report on Norway that said at St. Pauli Østigård played mostly RCB but actually had better stats at LCB, so if we did go three at the back I’d like to see how he gets on there.

That's interesting mate, you got a link? I'd definitely be interested in that.

I think at St Pauli he predominantly played in a 2 as part of a back 4 though didn't he?
On a related note I read an interview he did whilst on International duty where he stated that he took some getting used to playing on the right of a 3 & that he much prefers being in the centre. Also, interestingly he went to see Robins to complain when he had that brief spell out of the XI. Certainly a confident boy for 1 so young.

Can’t actually believe I’m seeing line ups with Shipley LWB 🤣🤣🤣
Cant believe fans are all ready writting him off and on a witch hunt before they have even seen him play. Even if he does play and gets done several times at least he layed in a position where we have no other option and Im sure if he could have a choice he wouldnt want to play there anyway

Yeah meant to say as part of a four. I saw that too. But as fitting him Fadz and Rose in is an issue I think it’s worth looking at.

It was this one smarterscout SPECIAL REPORT: Norway are about to blow stuff up

I think Schmee and myself agree on start xi and 4-3-3 formation on this one from past posts.

I think if we play wing backs the three behind Pukki wil ran amok - I don't count the fa cup as they had so many missing of their attack out on that day

Pukki with the three behind him tomorrow are a completely different proposition.

I think the only way we nullify those three is to play three of Hamer, James & Sheaf in midfield imo who have the talent to match them.

DaCosta as stated and proved above has played left side and I think can defend more than he is being given credit for.

Wing backs plays into Norwich's hands if we play this expansive style whatsmore with someone who hasnt played wing back hardly at all to boot.

Gotcha, fair opinion.

Norwich don't really attack in the wide areas though, they usually play with Buendia & Cantwell tucked in alongside Vrancic & overloading the central areas so I think a back 3 would cope better than a back 4 against this.

Agree on playing the midfield 3 of Hamer, James & Sheaf but I'd still have the wing-backs in there to offer us some attacking threat out wide. I fear almost matching them up with a similar system then their superior quality will eventually win through so we need to pose done questions of our own.
