Great point. Alot like the best poachers in football, icardi, chicherito, falcao or grrat example of past inzaghi

When doen thr middle poachers do not need to do much else

I would try ponti in middle and mcnulty biamou or jch right with reid left for one game and see how it works

McDonald 7 in spite of the mistake their goal? Would say worth knocking off 1 or 2 points off that score.

Well I did anyway. His heading also isn't great and the ball more often than not goes higher than it does long.

Kelly looked a menace last night, never seen him go forward like that before while playing for us... strong, determined, skilful with pace & most importantly most of his play was forward! if he played like that all season he would have been perfect partner for Doyle

Burge 6 - not a lot to do
Grimmer 5 -good first half, shocking 2nd. Looked knackered from 50 mins needed a rest
Willis 8 - very solid and brought ball forward well at time
Mcdonald - 6 solid except for the mistake
Haynes - 6 was ok , end product poor
Shipley - 6 good energy, nothing special
Pont - 6 good covering and work rate
Doyle -7 put in some good tackles
Kelly 8 - motm best ive seen him. Decent defensively and good going forward unlucly not to score again
Jch - 7 did well stretching defence, fouled all game - was a tough game for him but battled well
Mcnulty -8 2 goals

I thought he was pretty good last night, just the costly mistake which was poor but he didn’t crumble under the pressure of it or the nuisance of Newton and the handful Revel was.

Kept his head which I’ve levelled him at a 7.

Alex Revel is a handful, he and Willis kept him quiet mostly which is a god warm up for Lincoln’s Matt Rhead.

Agreed, I thought he was our best player. The kind of signing I expected him to be from game 1. I think Robins has given him more freedom to get forward.

My general thoughts on the game was that Stevenage were quite a poor side, gave the ball away in silly areas too often. I agree without Robins that it was disappointing to have conceded such a poor goal and that we didn’t manage to get a 4th at least. Off the top of my head, we haven’t scored many goals v teams who’ve got a red card, which is a cause for concern potentially. That said, I and my little brother enjoyed the game, good atmosphere and a fairly dominant performance in the end. Hopefully another win v Lincoln!

As for my ratings:

Burge, 6 - wasn’t tested at all really
Grimmer, 6 - defended well, crossing wasn’t anything special, he’s got a really good engine
Willis, 7 - makes defending look easy and an assist for good measure
McDonald, 5 - very poor goal to give away, otherwise defended well
Haynes, 6 - very average performance
Kelly, 8 - ran the midfield, got in their box and on another day could’ve had 1-2 more goals
Doyle, 7 - nothing flashy, but dominated his area
Shipley, 7 - very lively, think he did well in the middle
Ponticelli, 6 - he’s not a winger, the kind of player that isn’t v effective unless he gets a chance on goal, and nothing came his way unfortunately
JCH, 7 - good physical performance and tested their defence
McNulty, 8 - screamer and a poacher’s goal, perfect game for a striker

Subs:

Reid, 6 - looked lively, I would be tempted to put him on the wing in our new system > Ponticelli
Biamou, 6 - put himself about well, but the game was comfortably won at his introduction
Barrett, N/A - he had a go, didn’t really come off, looked frustrated from the get go

Interesting observation actually. I think Haynes has established himself as a clear first choice. In a sense, he’s a little bit underrated because his detractors are very quick to criticise him, sometimes fairly. I personally think we should let Stokes go at this point — doesn’t seem like the player he was once in the Mowbray days.

With all that said, in the last 2 games we’ve not had Shipley on the wing, we’ve played a weird, fluid 4-2-3-1 of sorts...

To make an observation of my own, with the way we’re playing atm, I actually think 5-3-2 would suit us quite well had there been time to implement it. Our wide play has come almost exclusively from the fullbacks and with our lack of wingers, it seems like a solution to fitting in Kelly, Bayliss and Doyle in central roles whilst keeping 2 upfront. I think Ponticelli has a really bright future, but putting him out wide doesn’t suit his style at all. For what it’s worth, I’m not really a fan of 5-3-2 myself — it’s just an observation.

How have you got to 60%? League games he’s started 26 and we’ve won 13 according to the site I use

Also wasn’t the point I was addressing anyway, it was the poster who said Haynes-Shipley on the left is a concern when we haven’t lost with that partnership since December, the partnership which has produced 5 out of our 7 losses since then is Stokes at left back and Shipley left wing

Shipley isn’t a concern for me, will turn out to be a superb player for this club. He’s come from nowhere this season and has contributed significantly. Next season he will be even better.

Haynes however, should be thrown on the footballing scrapheap. Cuts inside, passes sideways or attempts to cross only to go straight out of play. Let’s not get started on the defensive side of his game because it’s non-existent. I saw someone on here earlier posted that he’ll be playing in the Premier League in a couple of years. Always good to start the day with a good laugh.

He has the ability to ruin our season in an instant. Let’s just hope that Robins sees sense and puts stokes back in for the play-offs.

Yes if we want to go anywhere next season he needs to go and an established left back needs to be brought in.

You say that, but, in our last 2 home games we've made four (more like 5-6 to be fair) horrendous defensive mistakes, and none of them were by Haynes. Grimmer, Hyam, McDonald have all made bad mistakes resulting in goals. Stokes isn't half the player he once was, and the game he was reintroduced into, we lost. In terms of mistakes, he's not been too bad - sometimes his positioning is a bit off, but again, most of our defenders have had those moments. As for mistakes directly leading to a goal, like McDonald's deflected clearance on Friday, Haynes is nowhere near as bad as some people make out.

It’s honestly mental, it’s like Haynes has shagged some posters wives. He makes a mistake ‘he’s so shit! Get him out our club’ any of the other back 4 *quietly ignores*.

Is Haynes going to be a premier league left back - definitely not
If we get promoted do we need a new left back - ideally, yes.
Is Haynes a bad option at league 2 level - no
Have we looked better with him in the side over stokes - yes

So backs up my point about shipley then thanks. Haynes isnt a good player no matter how many stats you want to point out. He is on a par with stokes..not exactly a glowing endorsement is it

Well yep. Saying he is better than Stokes is nowt to be proud of.

Sounds more rational to say that Haynes is not as bad as Stokes this season.

Stokes just hasn't been the same player this season at all. Shame, because he was previously one of my favourite players.

Haynes is quite often caught out of position, is not good at tackling and should be much more of a threat when he goes forwards.

Bottom line is we need a new left back.
