Our game plan didn't change. They had 5 at the back and another 3 sitting just in front of them. There wasn't much room on the wings. There wasn't much room in the middle.

Then you had Hardie and Bundu who occupied several of our players. Even then we couldn't stop them. We need to learn that playing the high line isn't the best tactic to use against sides that play a certain way. It was so predictable. Two fast strikers waiting for the balls over the top.
They had Hardie and we had Laurel in goal

Would love to see a deep dive into what happens mentally to teams that turn in performances like that. Like it baffles me how often the entire team has an off day. You’d think law of averages would mean a couple would have a decent game but it always seems all or nothing. Sports psychology is fascinating.

The new generation of footballers is more brittle than the ones who’ve gone before. Just a theory, but more than a few of the old school managers have commented on it to make me think it’s genuine

Reflection of modern day footballer? These players are so inconsistent and that’s why they are playing championship level - suspect an element of arrogance today also, thinking “ah it will be fine”

We have little backbone and fight when going gets really tough in this team - something that needs addressing. Suspect sadly it will be the same outcome at Luton, as they will go direct and physical. We have to go 532 and match them and also go quite direct ourselves.

can’t really be bothered to get angry about GK situation anymore, but he really needs dropping now, it’s gone beyond point of return/showing faith. Powder puff stuff yesterday, again. Notice Collins slamming his hands around after 2nd goal, he’s Absolutly shot mentally - so fragile. Really not fair on him, let alone the team.

Will also say today was on FL - why drop JDS and sheaf - madness and frankly bizzare. Don’t get the rest argument, took JDs off after 60 mins Friday and sheaf needs minutes!

think we will beat Boro and make PO - which in all honesty is a hell of an achievement - what will be then, quite comfortable with what may happen either way.

Correct. We were shite because we set up to play the way they would have wanted us to. Sometimes instead of playing to our own strengths we need to counter the other sides strengths. I hope it's a lesson Lampard takes on board.
I think that because Bobby Thomas is injured we dared not play 3 at the back as there would be no spare cb on the bench if one had to go off. The thing most worrying me is that MVE had a howler, we rely on him a great deal for our right wing attacking moves. Let's hope Saturday is no repeat of yesterday.🤞🏻

We were well in the game for the first 20.

It was a case of MVE having a dire game and we couldn’t then handle the guy on his side who probably should have been sent off.

They didn’t really create much in the second half until they scored.

We have a poor keeper and not a great back line to cover him as we did with Wilson

The only option we would have had would be to play Binks in a back 3 including Lati

That’s a recipe for disaster - I’d guess Binks will be in the departure lounge in the summer

6 of Plymouth's 9 home wins have come against the current top 10

Well, yep.

Many a poster said it and said Plymouth would be tough and we could well lose, but others just weren't having that.

Plymouth are much stronger at home than away. They are obviously very physical and quick on the break.

It was always going to be a difficult match whatever.

I do think though, had we not let in that daft 3rd goal, in the second half, we could well have gone on to grab a point, or even turn it around completely.

That 3rd goal killed the game. Wright had obviously given us a lifeline just before halftime.

I would argue the decision to change to 4-4-2 and the baffling 2 subs that followed killed the game

I think it was very noticeable that Rudoni was having a sub par game too. He gave the ball away a number of times in that first half

We can't expect him to be brilliant every single game, mind.

Knowing that they are best playing against a high line with hitting a high ball over the top and sitting back in defence we should have sat back further. Then their high balls would have had less space to find their strikers. This would also have made them sit more forward leaving us more space up front to find gaps.

This is my issue with the high line. Against teams which deploy a low block and go long I physically can't understand the logic in setting up that way. All you're doing is creating a massive chasm in the opponent's final third and placing greater pressure on the backline to clear up when balls are put over the top which will inevitable be closed down by strikers that like to press.

As a collective backline we also consistently shit ourselves when a long ball is deployed. Derby most recently was a classic sign and even against Pompey there were a couple of instances which could have led to something. So against teams which play that way, why play into their hands?

I hope Lampard has finally learnt a lesson. It may have worked in his time at Chelsea but we don't have the quality they had in his time there. Like I said yesterday my son in law was quietly confident of getting a result against us yesterday. Lampard should have known the way they would play and the results they had been getting at home against the sides in the top 10.

No matter how good you are, sometimes you need to be able to change your tactics to counter your opponents.

Saddle have a word with your contact and see if one of the players can 2 foot Collins out for the rest of the season in training this week.

At this stage I would rather have Lee Burge in goal. At least he had some good days.
I did find myself thinking last night whether it would be best if Collins were to pick up a minor injury in training, but enough to keep him out of contention.

Both he and FL can save face on him not being in the team but we also get to change the GK.

Not proud of thinking that and we should never want one of our own players to be injured, but it's just got to a point where we need a change even if it comes in an unpalatable form.
