A Southampton fan recounting his favourite last game of the season

The final day of 2011-12 comes to the forefront of my mind. After facing two relegations in five years, Saints forced themselves back to the top flight with back-to-back promotions following their final-day heroics against Coventry City in front of a record attendance at St. Mary's. The memorable moment was marked with a pitch invasion.

We stayed until the end and must have been stopped dozens of times by Southampton fans to say nice things to us. Watching that team get thrashed 4-0 was the low point I thought, how wrong I was.

My favourite was the guy who ended up sitting in front of me who said it was "fackin' disgastin'" that a young girl at Stockport was wearing a City shirt rather than a Stockport shirt or at least "the shirt of a proper local club like United". Without a hint of self awareness.

Was speaking to a Man City 'fan' yesterday. He didn't like being asked how long he'd supported them then went 'I just support the teams who play the best football to watch'.
