If you believe “picked up a knock” is always said in truth then I’ve a bridge to sell you.

Bright “picked up a knock”.

Sometimes it means “dropped for a bit”.

Robins on Bright:

Manager Mark Robins said: “He’s training and playing and he’s got to get into a rhythm.

“That rhythm keeps getting broken, whether that’s been because of illness, injury or whatever.

“He needs to settle down and see where it takes him.”

Robins on Sheaf:

“Ben probably would’ve played but he got injured. He got injured earlier in the week in a wave session […] and he had to miss out because he only trained yesterday”

Yeah. Exactly the same 🤦‍♂️

Ha ha, he just sat out training for a laugh then?
And yes, I know for a fact that's true.
Probably just coz he's not rated by the management though yeah?

You really do need to get over your irrational hatred of certain players, it clouds your judgement & people then don't take your (rare) sensible posts seriously either.

Don’t hate Sheaf. He gives the ball away by dithering. He needs to sort that or it costs the team

It’s pretty straightforward.

There are those who don’t see that. I think they’re a bit clouded by stats that are irrelevant.

I’ll stick to my guns - not going to be browbeaten that Sheaf doesn’t give the ball away.

Serious Q @Frostie is dispossessions a stat that’s collected? I can’t find it anywhere on the free sites. We know Sheaf doesn’t lose the ball as much from passes (one of the best in the squad for pass completion) but where would we find stats on how often he’s tackled?

Look all you like. You might find whatever suits you.

It won’t change my opinion: Sheaf seems to dither and get caught out too often. I watch matches to see that, not mess around with daft stats.

I’m actually backing your point up here even though you can’t see it.

Yes, Opta have both Dispossessed & Unsuccessful Touches showing when a player loses possession. Doesn't include dribbles as they would be classed as Unsuccessful Dribbles instead.

They are on Whoscored.
It'll come as no surprise to the more sensible posters that Sheaf isn't worst for any of these categories:

Maybe.

Some stats are useful: metres ran, times offside, crosses completed, times fouled.

Some are not so straight forward unless really drilled down. “Passes completed” would be unfair on someone who tries to drill through balls rather than someone who passes it around the back line.

Someone tried that as a Hamer v Sheaf earlier.

IMO it was a daft comparison.

So no. There are stats and misleading stats.

Point still stands: Sheaf often dithers and loses possession more than he should. He needs to sort it.

Remember you're debating with a guy who said his teammates actively avoid passing him the ball despite him having the most touches of any player in certain games...
Pointless trying to reason with him.

See how they interact with DaCosta during games for that

Think I’ve been pretty consistent on this today.

He’s prone to giving the ball away and that is a particular liability if he’s sitting in front of the back line. There are posters trying to “prove” that he doesn’t by referring to passing stats and comparing to Hamer which is a nonsense.

It’s a side to his game that lets him down.

If you want me to say “Sheaf doesn’t get caught in possession more than he should” then let me know or perhaps say it yourself.

he’s not even relevant to last nights defeat - we conceded 4 goals without him in the team and you say pick Kelly whose worst attribute is passing

Ok. It was McFadzean’s fault.

Thing is, it was the third or fourth time that Sheaf had given the ball away in the short time that he was on. Watch the footage back.

Ben Sheaf often gives the ball away. He’s a liability. Our form improved last season when we bombed him and got Matty James in. A holding midfielder who flaps as soon as an opponent comes anywhere near is a liabity.

“we were 4-0 down”. Ok. Had we been winning or drawing the Sheaf would have cost us a point at least as he did last season.

Ben Sheaf is like Adam Barton. Some people see something in him - I don’t - it’s their opinion - they are entitled to it.

Why some people have an obsession with idolising a player who is such a calamity is beyond me.
Ben Sheaf is nothing like Adam Barton. Adam Barton was a lazy relented player who I can’t once remember breaking sweat.

Has to account for the majority of the blame for the 5th goal, but the fact you’re focusing on a guy who came on at half time and 4-0 down as your main discussion point is a little bit odd don’t you think?

Think he’d decided it was Sheafs fault was sat on the bench. Sheaf was no better or worse than the rest really.

Apparently there is belief within the club that Sheaf could end up a centre-half, don’t shoot the messenger just repeating what I have heard.

Really? If anything Sheaf should be playing further forward. He looks to me like he struggles when played too deep.

He reminds me of Walsh in that respect.

Well he clearly is relevant. He played half of the match and was partly culpable for one of the goals. I say that as someone who rates Sheaf by the way, but he was poor last night on the whole.

I agree Sheaf's passing is better than Kelly's generally but I do feel Kelly is less prone to losing possession in dangerous areas. He tends to play more long aimless passes, which are not great but they are less likely to result in goals against us.

Of course you can compare stats. You say his ball retention is poor, you say he gives the ball way alot. The stats show the complete opposite.

He was poor last night, but has been one of the better performers this season, arguably motm contender vs Forest and Reading

I think some think because he's tall he could just move into defence. It's rubbish of course.

Less likely to result in goals for us too though. We simply couldn't play the slick passing game we've been seeing at home with Kelly in that team.

Exactly. May as well not bother playing it out from the back.

How did he do against Reading in your view?
Did very well against Reading. My opinion

I’ve just checked the ratings from other posters, the theme being he did well, a bit shaky in defence, gave the ball away (these are other peoples opinions). But on the whole did very well.

However, since you’ve pointed out that my opinion is wrong, I’ve changed it:

Sheaf doesn’t dither and give the ball away very often. I’m quite wrong. His retention is Messiesque.

I agree to a large extent and was just challenging the assertion that Sheaf's performance was irrelevant to the result last night.

On Kelly you don't have to have every player being a good passer to be able to play slick football. There have been some really good footballing sides who have had a midfielder enforcer with limited ball playing skills.

I would play Sheaf over Kelly in most matches, but I think there are occasions when Kelly should play and last night might have been one. His influence and experience might have helped in the second half.

I think the slick passing of late is: get, give and go to an oncoming runner. That works with the WB’s and Allen / O’Hare down the flanks and is low and direct to the middle for Wag / Vik to give and go through the middle.

With Kelly the ball needs to go short to the attacking Wing Backs and not long and crossfield like Hamer does.

Don’t need to get defensive over it, pardon the pun. I just don’t think he’s a walking disaster on the pitch and the stats support that

I’m not that defensive; I’ve had much more inane debate.

I just like watching the folks on here frothing and chomping when someone has a different view. It amuses me.

I would suggest that said putrid rotten decaying corpse, dumped on the half way line, and left there for the duration of a game, would rate higher than JCS last night.

Cant argue with that.

Not only does he need to work on his retention, but I feel he tends to slow the game down too much, he needs to carry the ball quicker and generally ping it about quicker, I do rate him though, but he does frustrate at times.
