Here's a question.

How many other clubs were sniffing round our signings?

I'm talking especially about people like thomas, kitching, EMC, binks.

Big money paid, yet if they are such hot prospects why didn't we have to beat away rivals for their signatures?

Think that's quite telling...

Is it?

I still think Wright, Sakamoto etc are good players for this level. They’re not the reason we’re not getting results.
Wright is hit and miss but generally ok, Sakamoto I’ve always liked but I think the likes of Thomas, Kitching, Simms, Dasilva, Collins have all had more bad games for us than they have had good. Some of those mentioned have been especially poor in their time at the club.

How do we know we didn't?

It's not always broadcast and many times you don't find out for a long time after, if at all.

And how many others were after Hamer and Gyokeres?

Kitching is the only real clanger imo. Although I think that was poor negotiation (signing a captain on deadline day).

Still think we can get a tune out of Thomas and Simms. Dasilva and Collins were very cheap tbf.

We don't know.

But there was zilch to say anyone else was in for those. And realistically if anyone else serious had been they'd have likely got them over us given the money the parachute payment cartel have to spaff.

Like MVE with Leeds?

I think Binks is a quality player. He has only just turned 23 so plenty of development in him. He cost half as much as Kitching and for me is much better. I am sure there would have been other clubs looking at him.

We don't know and will never know.

We only know Bassette was wanted by multiple teams because his old club said it in an interview.
We only know Gyokeres was wanted by others because of Boddy's interview last month.

I'm sure MacAnthony said loads of teams were looking at EMC. The others, no idea. Because their chairman aren't on podcasts.

Why would anyone be 'sniffing around' EMC or Binks, they literally just joined.

EMC had 32 goal contributions from the wing this season, of course other teams would’ve been interested.
I think EMC will do ok once he gets a goal. He gets into good positions and isn't afraid to have a go. Just lacking confidence at the minute not helped by being in and out of the team and playing mainly on the right when he's much better on the left.

Where’s he going to play if we’re playing 3 at the back?

Only 4.25 million we’ve spent on him

I think there are some talented players out there..but majority don't have the commitment..the will to win!..have half hearted tackles..not particularly wanting the ball..when recieve it go sideways..backwards..we need someone to take control of the game..assert themselves..lead by example..maybe rub off on other players??..

I’m convinced we’ll turn things around but it’s clear that the team needs further investment in midfield and defence.

We need experience/leadership and different profiles of players here.

Couldn't believe we brought Binks back.
Kitching hasn't developed into a reliable centre back. No pace like Fadz but the similarity ends there

I don’t think so, £4.25m for a player with that record in the league below is a reasonable price.

It’s not quite the same, but Toney for £10m seemed ridiculous at the time. He was 24 and had 23/24 goals in about 32 appearances.

Toney went to the PL at 19, it’s not quite the same no.

You’re moving the goal posts. You (or others) held it against EMC because he came from a National League academy. Toney came through a L2 academy so the difference is minimal.

His career started off similarly to our Gael Bigi. Does well in one season, gets a big move, fails to break into to team and has multiple loan spells in lower leagues before being picked up on the cheap by Peterborough.

In any case, EMC was going to be signed by a Championship club because his form was that good last season. Whether or not he’s a success is besides the point because it was a rational signing. My personal belief is that he’ll be a great signing and make a lot of people look silly on this forum.

I cant see that at all. His career has been poor until two seasons at Pboro and he’s 25 so not getting any better. When he’s come on he’s looked miles off the standard. Like a lot of our signings the past two summers he looks more like a flash in the pan than people like Vik, Gus, O’Hare or Sheaf did when we signed them.

We have massively over paid for him, Kitching, and I would say Wright as well. I'm not sure Rudoni is worth £5m either.

A lot of the players don’t feel particularly well scouted TBH. Simms for example all the same complaints about him were there at Sunderland if you look papered over by a hot streak of scoring. Wright has barely played until the last couple of seasons, Kitching and Thomas seem to have had one good season in L1, EMC two. Torp again quite old for the profile and doesn’t seem to have been consistent.

Compared to the four I mentioned we got under Badlan, who were all performing at a young age or in Hamers case at a European level standard. All younger and on the up, not players whose careers had stumbled or had only hit form recently.

I don’t really understand why we spent so much money on Mason Clarke when he doesn’t even get in the side of everyone is fit and firing. We’re not a club who can really afford to be spending that much on back ups and the money could have been used better on other areas of the pitch.

To be fair you will of course get hits and misses regardless of how much scouting you can do.

Badlan you can argue found us Hamer but also found us Dacosta, The German winger, and Waghorn.

Even Gyok is a funny one, since it sounds like not everyone of the coaching wanted him and Robins drove that one himself.

Think the players we’ve signed are decent mostly and some really good. But think the lack of experience is hurting a few of them in there development.

If I’m Doug, I talk to my recruitment team about allowing a spine of older players with leadership capabilities to come in to help develop the younger lads, even offer a pathway to coaching if that’s what they want.

For example if we carry on with a back three we’ll need an experienced CB who can read the game and pick a pass. Wouldn’t mind Santos from Bolton if we would want to keep wages down. But there must be some premiership players on there way down we could start to target.

I don't get how anyone can say we've "massively overpaid" for Wright. 22 G+A in the league last season despite a slow start, scored some really big goals (Wolves, Man Utd, Leeds). Already has 3 this season even though we're crap and he hasn't even played that many minutes.

He's one of our most important players.

£8-9m is a lot of money, given his modest carer record before us.

EMC and Kitching are errors in negotiation IMO.

Kitching we left ourselves in a hole on deadline day as we were planning on 3 at the back so needed another CB. Gave us no leverage, so we ended up paying over the odds as he was captain at Barnsley when he should've probably cost about the same as Thomas.

EMC we obviously went in to January needing a winger as we'd switched to 433. He was identified (probably also with one eye on Wright moving back centrally as he had only just moved wide). Once Pboro pulled the rug on signing him in Jan we should've just canceled the deal and reconsidered in the summer - I'm sure we would've been looking more at spending bigger on the right hand side rather than the left given Saka's injury, or getting someone comfortable on either side.
