Was it Anthony Taylor that gave the pen ahainsy fadz at Preston
He’s reffing psg v Barca and no one is whinging I do wonder if our refs aren’t that bad after all lol
Pete, the club received a letter of apology from the EFL regarding Taylor's performance in that game. (As they did for the officiating performance from the game before against West Brom)

More like he hasn’t had much to fuck up.

The VAR is so much quicker in Europe

Watching the Swansea v stoke game, the ball slips out of the Swansea goalkeeper hands stoke player poked it in, in my eyes goal should stand but the ref disallowed it.
Now given a penalty for a challenge outside the box.

Rule is ambiguous, and don't set a time limit but "once the ref has signalled for a penalty kick to be taken, the kick must be taken" I'd read as once the ref blows his whistle you have to begin your run up. At most a couple of seconds delay would be allowed.

Otherwise someone could just take all game to take the pen as they could say they're in the process of taking the pen. Or you could start your run up but just run around the pitch for ages claiming it's part of your method.

I thought last time that Wright's excessive delay in taking the kick could work against him, and it seems this time it has.

I know I'm rehashing the argument, but the ref should have stopped the kick being taken. It was ludicrous to start moving towards him at that point. It's not like Haji was going to nip off for a fag before taking it. The referee is, as the chant goes, a wanker.

VAR in Europe have different protocols and also different rules as to when to get involved. It is far better which is why there are less issues. (There are still refereeing mistakes, but VAR doesn't get involved as much due to their rules on what is a VAR intervention)

I don’t get to see a lot of champions league as I am normally at work so it was better to see

Almost like the game was better without it.

Controversy in football is all part of the fun, and I think it's clear that the powers that be forgot that football is supposed to be a form of entertainment. I feel sorry for genuine fans of PL clubs who don't really get to celebrate a goal properly any more, just in case it's chalked off because someone's shoulder was a mm in front of the opposition. In fact, perhaps there is still controversy in football as a direct result of VAR, but it's manufactured and curated rather than being genuine.

Agreed. I think it's quite telling that although there is still a bit of uproar about this Gabriel handball incident. There isn't anywhere near as much as when we have VAR controversy
If that incident was in the Prem, they’d had looked at slow no replays for 10 minutes, decided no ‘clear and obvious’ error and carried on.

It was a penalty though and we’d have been fuming if that happened to us.

Going back to the Soton game and ref booking Lattie for a shirt pull ‘professional foul’.

Ok he gave a foul but be consistent Cov players were rightfully upset when the Soton player did exactly the same when (I think) it was Sheaf who went past his player and was deliberately pulled back-foul but no yellow.

That’s what we all want really a bit of fairness and consistency!!

Agreed but do we?
And I’d argue consistency doesn’t mean the same decision for the same foul in different places on the pitch at different times during the game
If the ref for soton had been consistent with the first yellow it would have been 8 v 7 by the middle of the second half
He did the early yellow to set out his expectations
Think it was haji or sheaf then brought down in a classic SPA foul and the ref didn’t give a yellow. Told you all you needed to know about how it was going to go from that moment on

Pete you are spot on. People that say they want consistency are wrong, and actually hypocritical (without meaning to be) I have said it a few times. We don't want consistency, if I make the wrong decision, why should i them be purposely wrong again in the name of consistency?
Referees aren't robots, and every referee is different exactly as players, it's a subjective sport with personal tolerances to such things. It's part of the game and as you rightly say here, referees have to manage the game as they see fit.

What I mean by consistency is that exactly the same foul given a yellow card for City is also given for the opponent.

It clearly was the same foul and yet not given a yellow. If the ref wants to set an example by dishing an early yellow card at least wait till the game has settled first otherwise always on a hiding to nothing.

As for confirmation bias-it’s definitely there if you watch a fascinating documentary on NBA refs betting scandal all that was literally about confirmation bias and which refs disliked certain players, coaches and teams.

Doesn’t take the greatest leap to see that happens in football too.

Yep it’s human nature
It’s been interesting to watch my lad ref games that I used to do in 1980-90’s and the different behaviour
Not much has changed in fact I’d say most people are far more respectful than anyone ever was to me
I may have just been shit and deserved the abuse and threats of course

They should get better in the PL as they are bringing in semi automated offsides next season as per the champions league

Is the letter a result of a decision made by the referee’s assessor or the club making a formal complaint? Either way, l am surprised that the club doesn’t receive a letter after every match (esp the Soton game) given some of the very poor standards on display.

How many more times can these pricks get away with it?

"Respect the ref"

Fuck off. You get respect by being good at your job and professional.

You don't give a "Penalty" like that unless you're either biased or incompetent.

They were a horrible bunch of cheats. Throwing themselves on the floor at every opportunity. Carvalho went from rolling around holding his knee to full on sprinting in 0.001 seconds at one point.

Shouldnt the game have been stopped due to a head injury before the penalty was given?
Could one of their players have been sent off?
Does the ref have a cobweb family tree?
Are our players tired?
Was the ref shit?
The answer to all of them are yes, yes, yes, yes and most certainly yes

Yeah that was shocking, should be booked.
