Someone said it earlier in the thread, but the problem is largely that they are picking referees from a tiny pool of people. If you don't cast the net wide enough you end up with fucking idiots refereeing championship games

Part of the reason that people don't want to begin refereeing is the dogs abuse and lack of protection they get at lower league games. There's not a chance I'd put myself in a position where I'm getting called every name under the sun, threatened and blamed for £50 plus mileage.

The solution I think is to take all referees for professional English football and make them full time, pay them £50/60k a year - so that it's a viable and attractive career.

This next bit is anecdotal and I don't know if its true, but I play cricket with a lad who is refereeing at step 6 currently and on a fast track course. Apparently they never demote a referee, so the bloke yesterday won't see repercussions for a bad game. He will remain a championship level referee, because they worry about the implications of sending somebody down to league 1 etc.

If that's true, then again, it's no wonder they're fucking useless.

I’m sure in one of the women’s games the other day they said the ref was playing in the World Cup 8 years ago. I’m guessing the girls are doing it. Think it would be a good idea, personally.

Been saying for ages part of their scholarship should be a referring qualification. Would give them a much better understanding of the rules and the pressure.

So much effort is put into getting kids to think about coaching etc a a fallback, but almost nothing on reffing.

You do get sanctioned but not demoted and as a lot is subjective you’d be surprised by what is judged as bad

For instance to prove the bollox from the old boys network my lads first assessment the only negative was his shirt wasn’t tucked in

Really? Do they have to get an actual qualification? Do they have to do stuff like reffing lower age groups?

Makes you wonder why there's so few refs available and also why they give so much grief to refs.
