Rudoni …? (2 Viewers)

I just think structurally our midfield stinks at the moment. It’s too fluid - you’ve got 3 players basically trying to play as 8s. Tell someone to rein it in.
Yeah I've genuinely never understood this.

Take for example when we've played Lati as a DM. Why is he ending up outside of the opposition box alongside Eccles?
For someone like Lati who isn't the greatest on the ball, would it not make more sense to have him as a half back or something?
Have him sit right in front of the defence or if one of the CB's push up and make a run into space, he drops into the backline.

I think Lati would actually suit this role really well. Put in a challenge, win the ball, play it on and then drop back. Would stop us having a fuck off hole in front of the defence every time.

Sheaf doesn’t look 100% to me. However, I think it looks structurally weak for different reasons. Eccles and/or Sheaf will stand in advanced positions but when they get the ball there, still hesitate to put the ball in the box (non-crosses) and look to go out wide. Too often, we get it out wide and the opposition has 7-10 players on the box in a set defensive position.

Torp came on and did well to actually win the ball in midfield and advance the ball. Iirc, it was Torp’s pass to Simms for the chance he missed with Bassette open.

If he can perform at that level consistently (my concern) that could go a long way in resolving some of those midfield woes until Jan.

For all the problems we currently have, I find Rudoni's consistent under performance the thing which makes me most angry...

Some players are getting pelters for snatched passes / mis-control etc. which to a certain extent is understandable.

However, I think Rudoni is just shirking responsibility and his commitment is open to question. As soon as Jamie Allen is fit, I would have him back in the team immediately in front of JR.

In a struggling side, someone who can provide decent set piece deliveries is essential. He isn't even deemed good enough to do that currently....

Our corner routine amounts to just crossing it in and hoping for the best. Another Dempster special.

Would like us to try something a bit different.

Torp
Sheaf Rudoni

I think Torp is much better suited to being further up the pitch and has that killer final ball we seem to be lacking constantly.

Agree with this

Torp looked good and involved when he came on. His issues this season have been when he was asked to do a more defensive job with sheaf out, which just isn’t really his game

Rudoni is technically very good but as everyone’s saying needs to be involved far more. Torp, Eccles and sheaf start Saturday for me

Apparently Rudoni was notorious at Huddersfield for throwing a tantrum when things weren’t going his way and not putting effort in when they were losing. Got hooked after 30 minutes in their game against Ipswich on the final day of last season.

Can well believe that

He's like Where's Wally at times during games.

Barely know he's playing.

yea a bit frustrating, there were a couple of genuinely brilliant balls into the box though, which we havent had for a while!

Let's be honest, absolutely none of the squad are anywhere near they need to be, they have all been bang average at best, something is wrong!

Why is he being targeted rather than someone like Sheaf or Eccles?

Never understood why Torp has been played in the deeper role with Rudoni more advanced.

It seems pretty obvious to me if they're on the pitch together it should be the other way around.

Rudoni needs a spell on the sidelines.. robins keeps picking him and he just has no influence on the games generally (Sheff wed goal apart) ... Really poor so far though same could be said for most of the team

Because at least you notice them, for good or bad. Rudoni you can forget is even on the pitch.
He’s scored 2 goals (well, as one was ruled as an OG) and 2 assists. Whereas, Torp, Eccles, Sheaf and Allen have combined for a total of 0 goal contributions. Therein lies your problem.

0 goal contributions in 14 games from our midfielders and we’re scapegoating our advanced players. We don’t control the midfield, they don’t win the ball back high up the pitch and they don’t get goal contributions. It isn’t good enough and it’s an area that needs investment.

Exactly this and that was what actually happened for me recently. Think it was the Preston game.

He suddenly popped up on the TV screen and I had forgotten he was playing.

Drops out of games to often Not sure what
Kind of player he is Still lacking a player to take the bull by the horns and go attack teams . First time we ran at them we scored then started time wasting 20 mins into first half bizarre game , too many passengers in the team and ffs stop
Playing short goal kicks then lumping it

Sensation at LWB today, albeit given the state of the game there was little defensive responsibility. Got on the ball in far better areas playing out there.

This won’t be a popular opinion but I actually thought Kitching was good first half. Agressive, put a shift in and got in decent positions.

we played well as a team all game really.

He did exactly what a centre back of his type would do at LB - not much but the bare minimum in my opinion (I know he’s played there before). He wasn’t going to offer anything going forward against a premier league winner - was a bizarre decision and don’t think Robins will do it again

I think he might if the situation called for it. The physicality of their attack meant it would have been suicide to put da silva there when we are without bidwell. Absolutely the right decision. Neither of their goals came from that side of the pitch. Also absolutely the right decision to change it at half time when we could look to push further up the pitch

This is where I struggle with Robins conservatism, because whilst it enhances the physicality of that LWB position you’re completely nullifying our ability further up the pitch - a huge issue if you’re operating in a formation with wingbacks. Dasilva hasn’t done too much wrong this season - if him being 5”5 was an issue why buy him in the first place.

Luton are a physical side full of big boys, yes. But he’s made his lineup choice being ruled by fear rather than trusting the only specialist available in that position. It goes against things he says in the past about it being about us.

I can see your point, but different games call for different line ups and tactics.
I dont expect to see Kitching at LB against a side of 5ft0 attackers, but when bidwell is injured it makes sense.
Da Silva hasnt played badly but he does get targeted by opposition, they put balls over the top of him regularly.

Horses for courses, no problem with me, needs must but we won partially due to stumbling on another option of a Binks and Rudoni link up which was probably more bizarre. Binks pushed into space beautifully.

I don't get that

I know we made the two defensive errors, but otherwise we really put Luton to the sword, which showed what MR put in place WAS working.

It looked a defensive lineup, but we were constantly attacking and on top.

Dasilva definitely would have struggled today. Without doubt

By his own admission the Kitching decision didn’t work - that’s why he was taken off - there was nothing happening down our left side. It’s something that’ll be a real issue against a tougher opposition. Rudoni did fine today when they were under pressure but you cannot persist with a 352 without specialist wingbacks.

I’m conflicted because we did win in the end. Just frustrated with the defensive first approach and nullifying the whole point of a wingback formation

But like I said, it wasn't a defensive approach. We attacked really well today.

It only looked a defensive approach on paper. The reality was that we played some good attacking football and looked very likely to score.

Hope MR gives Rudoni a run of games at LWB. He can't be any worse defensively than JDS , has at least as much pace and obviously additional height. He showed ability to beat his man and whip dangerous balls into the box. A good number of players have successfully reinvented themselves in completely new positions ( for those of a similar age Kenny Burns was a fine example as was Paul Warhurst) .
