You miss the point again.

A major issue in expanding business conference trade is lack of hotel rooms.
The rooms need to be provided to get the business first.

The fact that you can get a few rooms this week is irrelevant if there is nothing on.

You can always get a room at the NEC but they are still building a new 170 room hotel.

It's virtually impossible to get rooms at the NEC sometimes as I said yesterday.

Though can usually get them in Cov if Birmingham full, except in exceptionally rare cases when have to go as far afield as Leicester to find a room at short notice for a reasonable price.

At the moment yes, I agree.
But if you intend to expand the corporate business then you need to increase number of rooms.
Case in point is the 2 major weekend events in March and April where I believe ALL rooms are sold out.
If this is the case then they are loosing business, both for these weekends and and other potential events that need accommodation.

The NEC hasn't built a new hall for about 15-20 years ffs

Never had a problem with them building hotels on the land, just always objected to the fact that ACL seemed to think it was the responsibility of the club to do so before.

The Ramada is a 4* as is the Hilton. The Hilton has also been used by colleagues as a next resort after hotels around the city centre have been exhausted.

When a big event like the motor show is on you can never get a room at the NEC. As already stated we had to use numerous hotels for staff and many were in Coventry.

Multi-faceted leisure amenity? I like it. Much better than community asset. However, what actually goes on there for the community apart from gambling in the casino, the gym and psychic sally? This isn't a piss-take I just wondered what "community" events took place there? After all that was part of Richardson's vision, wasn't it? A 365 facility.

It's a fair question this. It's obviously much more of a community-asset if there's a football team there, I'd say. I suppose the gym (if it's still there), and the fact that it's a half decent venue for live music on the small scale as well as the big scale is no bad thing. And it's not just Psychic Sally Torch, I've seen The Fureys there too!

And, of course, it has created jobs at the Hotel and Casino in particular. Every community needs jobs.

So on balance, I think it does offer something to the 'community'. I'm not sure it's tied into the community as much as a decent pub, or a good playground, or even a proper library maybe, (or a sodding great car factory for that matter) but I think it is still an asset to the area.

The 2 big weekend events at the Ricoh in March and April have advertised that all hotel rooms at the Ricoh are sold out.

Even you can deduce 2 things from this.
1. If more rooms were available they would have also been sold.
2. If a big corporate event wanted a lot of rooms it may not consider the Ricoh.

If I was a manager for ACL I would be looking at the business case for further hotels and events.

However, the location of the Ricoh being so central means hotels are not so important. A major retailer held a 5 day conference there recently and hardly anyone needed to stay as it is reachable from so much of the country.

Surely what we really want is a football team playing there and a Car park C full of cars.

In a previous job we were booked as a department to go and have a team building weekend in Cardiff of all places. This had farce written all over it from the start as none of us wanted to go and it just went downhill from there. Whoever in HR (and no-one owned up) booked it didn't check the sporting schedules as there was a massive rugby match on that weekend at the Millennium Stadium. So the city is heaving with drunk rugby fans to begin with, then at the very last minute the MD for the firm decides he wants to come along and they have to try and find him a room. The rest of us are out at the Holiday Inn Express because we were booked in aeons ago (and it's cheap) whereas he has to stay at the Thistle in the centre for some extortionate rate, because it was one of the few rooms left in the city.

When we were only three minutes into the first "workshop" someone yelled Bingo rather too loudly as they'd just marked off a line on their bullsh!t bingo card that we'd made. The people running the course were useless and at the start a mate who'd done a similar thing before said that when we get to the end they'll say "you need to communicate more as a department". That apparently is the normal thing for these people to say. so sure enough at 3pm on the Sunday we reached the conclusion where they presented their report on us and the first thing and pretty much the only thing they say is "you need better communication between team members and groups" whereupon there is fits of giggling and a few people shouting bullsh!t under their breath. A total waste of a weekend and - lucky for some - the MD suddenly found he had a ticket to the Rugby and only popped in at the start and end of the days.
