Too swanky and expensive, football is a working man's game. Give me a pint of Carling Premier and a ham batch and i'd go every evening!

Not a bad drop Premier, not seen it for years.
You are right though, the prices are too high for what it is.

Downstairs is cracking but too posh for what it needs to be and upstairs is a working men’s club with downstairs prices. It doesn’t know what it is yet. Hopefully they work it out.

I remember it from years ago mate, in the old club at highfield road, first ever pint in there with my old man :)

I can give some context around why they have so little of their own brews on keg or cask. The main brewer is from Portugal and was unable to get back after going back there for a couple of weeks to see family. Also they have moved the brewery equipment to a new unit and as they've expanded so fast it's been a case that they've not been able to brew as much as they normally would. I'm sure in the coming weeks this will be rectified. In terms of the spire bar,I don't think the cool room/cellar is all that large so limited to what can stock. It's a work in progress. You have to bare in mind that they have been busy opening too new bars and expanding the existing brewery.Give it time and hopefully more of their own brews will start to re-appaer on draft/keg

I genuinely can't remember the last time I seen it. Though I've not lived in Cov for nearly 15 years now and Carling isn't as popular here. From what I recall it was Carling but a bit smoother, similar in mouthfeel to Caffreys

Think in some part of the process they both used a different gas to other beers.
Possibly nitrogen.

Can only echo most of the comments on here. I went there on the Saturday evening after the Barnsley game earlier this season, I was expecting it to be heaving but there was only a handful of people in there who cleared out after a while. The upstairs was closed.

Rebrand it to just 'The Tavern', keep some Sky Blue decor but tone it down a bit and reduce prices slightly. And for goodness sake, get rid of that awful 'stand' they have there.

Can't fault the service mind. They had plenty of staff on who kept coming round to clear empties and take orders etc.

To be honest, if you're going to have a Sky Blue Tavern it should be at or near the ground. Not many clubs could support a branded bar away from the stadium.

Drove past this afternoon and the wife (eyes like a shit house rat.......misses nothing) asked "what's that" ? referring to the Tavern. Took the time to explain the concept and the reasoning behind it, to which she responded "well it's in the wrong place and they will never fill it".
There are times when................I have to grudgingly agree with her and I fucking hate it!!!

Sadly, it appears to be failing at the 4ps of marketing (product, place, price and promotion).
Product - should really have ensured own ales are on tap. Perhaps understandable when I went in (mid August) - but should be sorted by now.
Place - near the ground would have been better. Off the ring road isn't ideal.
Price - ok for a one-off / match day, but it isn't going to attract drinkers regularly (and especially not students) at those prices for drinks. Seems worse when I went as you had to buy a 'can' for the price of a pint.
Promotion - has some good links with club and using them. Quite happy with sky blues theme - but would it appeal / put off sports fans (especially those who follow a different football club)?

Hope they adapt and improve and more customers support them.

Fingers crossed then!

I’ve spoken to the main brewer before, it was just when Dhillons was first launched and they got involved with something I was doing at the time related to ale. Nice and helpful chap, as you say they’ve grown a lot recently and it’s evident in a few ways.

So. Let me get this straight.

The Coventry City FC themed pub called the Sky Blue Tavern is too Coventry City FC themed ?

Fackinell.

Oi Garçon ! Take this Confit de Canard back. It tastes far too fucking French

The vast vast majority of people who live in Coventry don’t support the club. Wouldn’t surprise me if people think you need to be a member or have a season ticket to get in.

I live 5 minutes walk away from it and other than match days I’ve not even considered it unfortunately. Shit beer. Proper egg smelling bad pints. The price is expected these days, but at least give me a decent one please.

If they don’t support the club I’m glad there’s an overly themed club bar for them to dislike. Serves the smart basturrds right.

That said, if you charge me ten quid for an egg smelling pint…

100%. All those years of going to 'their' shit bars with 'their' shit decor and shit music and invariably quaffing shit ale.
Pay back time you sock cuckers.

For a brewery their beer selection is incredibly disappointing too.

Last few times I’ve been to the Spire Bar, they’ve only had their lagers on, and on a few occasions only one of those. They literally brew ale, why not have at least one on!

50/50 on the quality of the beer too.
100% with you. It’s a fiver a pint for beer which despite being ‘craft’ doesn‘t have more flavour or ABV than mainstream pours such as Carling. Their Red Rebel is a better drink but hardly fits the sky blue theme as far as the tavern is concerned. On this basis, £7-10 for a really decent IPA, Porter or Saison at the Tap in Beer Gonzo is actually better value.

Weird thread. People have seemingly decided it is going to fail, with zero knowledge of revenues, overheads or having seen the business plan.

I've been critical of the beer, but that's fixable. They can also adjust pricing. I also find it odd that people still think students only drink in dingy basements at 50p a pint. They'll promote to students and will get a lot in.

This place won't need to be packed every night to succeed. The function room will bring in most revenue anyway.

I've been in a few times and enjoyed it a lot in there. The food is a but pricey but thought it was very good! And in terms of a Sports Bar to go watch big games on the weekend or whatever I think it fits the bill.

I want it to succeed and do well and think they deserve people to support them as best they can.

I've been Spire as well a lot and as just a bar that's nice. They are now doing food from the Tavern for Spire Bar too. Then gets delivered across. So I think weekends are the money makers.
