Squad Numbers (1 Viewer)

The numbers mean nothing nowadays. Beckham was 23 at R.Madrid - didn't mean he was nowhere near their starting 11. A lot of numbers nowadays are superstition based or personal preference.

Called me old fashioned but I miss the old days when you knew who was playing where, based on their number, 1-11:

1 GK
2 RB
3 LB
4 CM
5 CB
6 CB
7 RM
8 CM
9 ST
10 ST
11 LM

The good old days.

And on the subject of the good old days, if I were ever head of FIFA (god forbid), I'd ban coloured football boots. No white, no pink (which seems to be popular at this Euros), no blue, no red - only black.
You sound more like me than I do.😂

Where have the squad numbers appeared?

Regarding numbers. In 1978 at the World Cup, the Argentina squad were numbered from alphabetically. Hence there was a number 1 playing outfield.
The egos of some players regarding their squad number just seems a bit ridiculous at times.

They did it in 82 as well except for Maradona who still got the 10 even though he should have had 16 or something like that 😂

Italy used to do it largely by order of position with only the goalkeepers and Baggio not following it exactly in 94

In France keepers love wearing 16. There also seems to be a practice of youth players (making their debut?) wearing a 33 shirt without a name on the back.

Incorrect. As the song informs us:

1: Gary Breen
2: Gary Breen
3: Gary Breen
4: Gary Breen
5: Gary Breen
6: Gary Breen
7: Gary Breen
8: Gary Breen
9: Gary Breen
10: Gary Breen
11: Gary Breen

Substitutes:
Gary Breen

Then you had the ones where the number they wanted was taken, so they had the numbers that added up to it. Zamorano at Inter literally had 1+8 on his shirt as ronaldo (I think) had the 9, when for Chile he was the 9.
There is another one I thought of but it’s just slipped from my memory as I was typing.

Wasn't it Clinton Morrison when he played for us? Eastwood had 10, Morriston had 1+9

Expecting Wright to keep his number 11 shirt too.
