Although it panned out this way during the season, we don't know that for sure yet! McNulty, especially over the last two games, has proven just how good he is at holding up the ball (I never really gave him any credit for that part of his game). Could he spearhead the attack with Andreu behind him? Maybe, they formed a good bond in Scotland and have gone on to do well individually in England. With a three of; Bayliss, Andreu and Jones behind McNulty, I think that could be really fluid with all of them interchanging. All of them are good at passing and controlling the ball. We wouldn't be able to as direct as in L2, all service to McNulty would have to be to his feet. I think we'll try and be a bit more expansive in the way we play in L1 anyway, so I'd like to see this tried out.
This said, retaining the option to play 4-4-2 is equally important because having the option to mix things up/change the system if our tactics are failing probably was the difference between our season stagnating and moving forward.
I'm in agreement that it will be interesting to see who and what kind of players we sign. Our team is good enough to stay up in L1 I think, but, if we want to kick on we'll need to sign 5-6 players at minimum to increase the depth. L1 won't be as forgiving if we're struggling to work out our best team as was the case this season at various points at this season.
