Nah, he’s to similar to McNulty in some respects, you need a different type of player to compliment each other.

Plus you could build a very competitive squad on 1.5m getting 4/5 players in.

Disagree a bit, he's much more of a physical player and bagged a lot of goals in a poor team. Agree though on spreading any funds on more players-my concern is relying too heavily on McNulty in a league where he'll get less time/space.

Grimmer/Stokes and Haynes just not good enough footballers for league 1/future.
Stokes was excellent in league 1 before his injury, and I don't think he's been overly poor this season either. Grimmer's still relatively inexperienced, and has a reasonable pedigree. I wouldn't write them off myself, but would agree we need backup and / or players to push them to hit their best form each week. I'd also agree we need wingers, although we've done alright without them recently!

What we really need is depth, so we can pull players out when they're not doing well.

Let's be realistic we're not spending a million pound on anyone even if players are sold. If we spend quarter of a million in the summer I'd be surprised

Correct I’d be surprised if our total investment exceeded 250/300k this summer.

Doyle will want to start every week but doubt he could manage it physically never mind on ability. Definitely need to eye up someone of the same ilk to take over his role.

Some of these 'signings' will need 1) a transfer fee 2) increased wage to back that up. Some of the current playing squad may then have to be appeased to keep everyone sweet. Difficult balancing act. I am slightly reassured by MR's comment that things are much better financially now, than this time last year (although whether that was a sneaky way of pressuring the owners to release funds, as MR knows the budgetary position, I don't know. Clever, if so!)

Why will we all of a sudden have to start spending transfer fees on player now we’re in L1? It’s not even a necessity unless you’re competing for the title/automatic promotion, which is v unlikely.

The key to improving this squad is adding mainly good experienced pieces and a couple of development players who are ready to fill in like Hyam has.

I do trust MR and his team to deliver.

Summer and preseason is crucial now. Shipleys fitness has got better and better, a full pre season with a set regime for him and stokes could work wonders. Same with jch if we are keeping him. I don't care what people say he looked fucked to me yesterday which is understandable because he hadn't played regularly for a year.

It's a brilliant problem to have, what of Davies, hyam, Kelly, grimmer. League 2 players who have excelled, do we trust them for league 1?

Kelly has been the most under rated player this season. Hyam has shone from nowhere as well. I don't know, its fascinating

We do need two more quality wingers though. Jones should be a star again assuming he's back fit and proper

Our image will have improved a lot to prospective signings, which I think has been a bit of a problem. Reading Doyle's comments recently I was a bit surprised that McNulty initially preferred Mansfield. A few others have apparently been put off, probably mainly by off-field issues, but seeing us win promotion, and the way we did it will help a lot.

Absolutely. Coventry City are being talked about now without the words Sisu and court case being mentioned in the same breath. That will make a huge difference when it comes to recruitment. Potential signings are now joining the league 2 play off winners rather than a "crisis club". Nothing may have changed off field but the perception has.

Exactly, to me he’s not the sort to lead a line in a 4231, but in the 10 you take him out the box where his predatory nature is taken away the same as the wide areas. He’s better feeding of a focal player in a 442 to me and his stats suggested that prior to his ccfc days.

Question hen is does Andreu suit a 442 wide role?

Difficult balancing act for MR to get right this summer

With our injured players to come back, we’ll have two viable systems to play (based on current squad).

First, 4-4-2 with Jones on the left, Bayliss on the right with Kelly and Doyle in the middle. The archetypal ‘big-man, little-man’ combo upfront, more direct style of play.

Second, 4-2-3-1 with Andreu behind McNulty instead of a striker. Personally, I think this was Robins’ first choice system before injuries kicked in last season. Probably a more possession based game in this system.

Does anyone think much of our playing budget could be spent on tying down our current players on longer term contracts? The majority of our squad are out of contract next season.

This is true we’ve currently players to play both ways but both at a cost, 4231 is MR preferred system but as I say it don’t suit McNulty but allows JJ to play more and is designed to play through a 442 system with neat passing and on paper suits Andreu and his supposed vision and passing range.

However 442 suits McNulty more of a big man but can Andreu then play wide right or left allowing JJ the freedom to switch flanks still so he can cut in on the right.

It’s gonna be a interesting summer to see what we do in the market as we’ve already 2 players to try and fit in without signing anyone.

Although it panned out this way during the season, we don't know that for sure yet! McNulty, especially over the last two games, has proven just how good he is at holding up the ball (I never really gave him any credit for that part of his game). Could he spearhead the attack with Andreu behind him? Maybe, they formed a good bond in Scotland and have gone on to do well individually in England. With a three of; Bayliss, Andreu and Jones behind McNulty, I think that could be really fluid with all of them interchanging. All of them are good at passing and controlling the ball. We wouldn't be able to as direct as in L2, all service to McNulty would have to be to his feet. I think we'll try and be a bit more expansive in the way we play in L1 anyway, so I'd like to see this tried out.

This said, retaining the option to play 4-4-2 is equally important because having the option to mix things up/change the system if our tactics are failing probably was the difference between our season stagnating and moving forward.

I'm in agreement that it will be interesting to see who and what kind of players we sign. Our team is good enough to stay up in L1 I think, but, if we want to kick on we'll need to sign 5-6 players at minimum to increase the depth. L1 won't be as forgiving if we're struggling to work out our best team as was the case this season at various points at this season.

Was told Monday that Bayliss is going to Leicester but we are loaning him back for next season. Hope it’s just a rumour as this lad is pivotal for next seasons campaign

Would that be such a bad scenario? It will take a minor miracle to keep ahold of him this summer let alone in a further two transfer windows, especially if he shines in League One as he has done this season. If anything that would time the best deal for us.

why? if he smashes it in league 1 too he would be worth even more(assuming under contract still)

for me the priorities has to be a left back and maybe a keeper. Stokes has been actually half decent since replacing Haynes so certainly less of a priority so could continue there. Burge is still questionable but vastly improved, I would really love a young keeper coming through the system to push for that position. Personally like Grimmer but he gets no protection when he is going forward so they need to work out what they want from that role, if they want a right back then he is less of an asset compared to a wing back.

Doyle's inevitable replacement also needs to be a priority and with Jones and Andreu back could someone like Shipley fill that spot over the course of the season?? A natural left winger would be great equally but we are at risk of having too many midfielders when the club finances cannot sustain them.

don't think we will invest heavily but we aren't going to know how we shape up until we kick off, hopefully we go into the season in a positive mood which is probably the first time ever which can be absolutely key

If a substantial bid comes in this summer it's difficult to imagine the club will turn it down on the basis of, if we hold out for another year we might get more. Anything can happen in football including Bayliss suffering a long term injury or simply being out of form. So, on this basis I can imagine they'll be reluctant to make the same mistake as they did with Ben Stevenson who could've gone for 3 or 4 times than what he did. Despite a relatively successful year on the financial front we're still a club that relies on player sales to remain solvent, achieving promotion to league one doesn't change that unfortunately unless SISU are willing to invest.

With Tom Bayliss it’s really not as simple as keep him.

We could end up with another Ben Stevenson situation where we reject a bid say from Derby for a tidy sum and the players head turned and he fades away behind Zane Westbrook in disappointment at not getting a move and in January you end up accepting 500k when you could of got a good deal with add ons this summer.

The joys of being a manager...

Just seen this, it’s a good point that MR will likely have to factor

think it states anywhere between £500k to £1.5M so I guess we will never know the truth on that one.

Well as a fan you can only go on what's reported so I'd have to agree with you there. Plenty of numbers were thrown about but the £1.5 million figure cropped up the most and given we turned down a few bids from Brentford during that window it wouldn't surprise me if it was nearer that mark, especially as they sold Scott Hogan around the same time. But like you said we'll probably never know the truth!
