Why is it assumed "potential" is just a word? The defence are all of ripe development age to reach their peaks, which is usually 27-32ish, aside from the elite freaks. So, if we trust the developers, surely they will not be the same defence as last year but an improved, more experienced and cohesive unit. I'd argue maybe we could do with a very experienced head as an option and for guidance, but it's clear they aren't a set of complete donkeys. They had peaks and troughs like all developing players and if we're to acheive our aims, the troughs have get shallower. Obviously, If they were as perfect as some people demand, they'd be playing Champions League football.

I suppose, if you're underwhelmed by our players, or the ones we get linked to, after what we've done in the last 5/6 years, you're probably either melodramatically bored or unrealistically greedy, either way, signing players is not as simple as pandering to individual fans demands, that would be quite chaotic...we have to trust the management, the record isn't too bad. Instead of "panic" or being "concerned" every year, because it's not personally fulfilling, just enjoy the fucking ride!

Thought we had moved up the table to just below the half way mark last I read, after being in the bottom three for the previous two seasons. HW, Simms, MVE, Palmer and JDS were either already on high wages or in MVEs case along with the ex-Barnsley boys had a substantial pay rise. A few players signed new contracts.

You should have 22 first choice or squad players. The idea of a ‘backup’ isn’t what we need though as invariably these players are just a bit short of the level required. I’d prefer to be going more for players who can be rotated in and out of the side with less drop off in quality.

Yes. We pushed for promotion last year so I really dont see why not. Rudoni, on balance, will give us more than O’Hare even if it’s just availability. Kitching, Thomas and MVE have a season at this level under their belts - not to be underestimated. Torp has had a full pre season. Outside of defence and attack there is no settling in period required for Simms and Wright - that’s huge. And then you add in EMC as an option and a settled in Sakamoto. All without further transfers (which will inevitably happen anyway).

I didn’t say we weren’t and think that is what MR is aiming for. However when you’re going for decent players the deals will always be harder to get over the line.

Exactly, which is why trust and patience should be warranted as we try to get to the next level, despite being far from the flushest.

Very dangerous to assume that Gyokeres will eventually go for a big fee. He could lose form or get a serious injury. Maybe before your time but there have been instances in the past where we have bought players in the expectation of getting big fees for one of our players. Larry Lloyd was one such case.

It's funny how people on here go on about other teams overspending, yet expect an endless supply of multi million pound signings. Mason-Clark, Torp, Binks and Rudoni cost about £10 million combined and we haven’t sold anyone.

On the so called Hamer replacement we bought in a whole range of players, most of whom were successful using the money from his and Gyokeres' fees. You can never get an exact replacement and indeed other areas were more of a priority. This was proved to be right as midfield was generally our best position last season.

Clearly we need a keeper but unless we sell someone like Sheaf, van Ewijk, Simms and/or Wright I can't see us buying another midfielder or spending millions again this summer. If we couldn't afford minor additions in January when we were fifth in the table and knew we had a fixture pile up coming up we're hardly likely to do so now and wreck the long term future of the club.

Likelihood Milan will only last 1 more and at a push 2 seasons so what about Norton-Cuffy on a loan with a view to sign. Can’t see anywhere how long he has on his contract I’d assume a year so could come back play a part and then if all goes well when Milan goes he will be ready to step up?

We aren’t actually that far off having it to be quite honest. You also keep missing the point, I favour rotating players regularly so we don’t end up with fatigue or injuries derailing the season.

People would not start rusting on the bench.

Its a weird thing to argue about actually as we'll find out who's right and who's wrong within a few weeks. You can't prove either way something that hasn't happened.

I agree we need two players for each position. They don't all have to cost multi millions though.

Yeh you want someone who can step in without the drop off being huge. I agree, we're getting there anyway and it's clearly what we're aiming for.

I think the same I’m just being hopeful but I just like the fact of having a good back up ready and waiting can also bring different things to Milan. BNC had tricky feet and could beat a man whereas Milan likes to overlap.

My earlier point about values was more what I think we need in order to be a fully functioning squad capable of getting promotion. It doesn’t mean we can’t do it with the current squad, I just think it’ll be way more of a struggle, not that we haven’t defied the odds before of course, it’s definitely possible we get promoted with the current team.

I agree with you too, I suspect we'll dip into the free market once or twice, as we should. Some people have got really spoilt and snobby about signings tbh.

Doug cant 'invest personally' in transfers though. FFP dictates that owners cant just throw money at it. We dont know, as you say, however i am very positive we can't afford anyehere near the level of squad you seem to demand.
