Fully agree with all these comments. There is a limit to the squad size of only 25 players over the age of 21 too. As a whole I think most of us are fairly happy with our potential starting 11 therefore we want the rest of the squad to improve so we have sufficient cover. We are not going to spend millions on cover as unsurprisingly expensive players will expect to start. I do wonder if the injuries and preseason performances at the moment will have made us switch targets. I know I hoped Burroughs would be a solution however his reviews haven't been great on here. I thought Obikwu potentially could stop us needing a new forward thinking if Simms was injured then Wright would.play down the middle but with Simms and Wright injured we are looking light. But it is getting the right player in at the right price. They need a certain skillset, need potential to improve, need to fit into the squad and need to be the right price. So not a panic buy. If we buy some players will need to move on to to create space in the squad, I can envisage 5 in, 3 outs plus potentially some youngsters loaned out. The main outs been Wilson or Collins, Burroughs and then possibly someone like Palmer who.although I think would be invaluable from the bench might want to be a starter.
Exactly how I see it too. Palmer was looking for an increase in wages according to someone on here (no idea if that really is the case though). We might sacrifice an attacking midfielder to get in a striker.

Maybe I’m just being massively biased but I think I’d rather play for us as a backup player and have a solid chance of playing in the prem than be stuck in the championship for all eternity with Preston 😂
This ongoing talk of ‘backup’ players is beginning to trigger me more than bringing everyone back for corners

End of July. Prem teams juggling their squads before releasing loans. Those squads are not yet complete as push normally comes to shove in August. We sit at the end of both those processes, either waiting for loans or waiting to see if any of our sell on clauses are triggered. It’s quite possible we have Player 1 ready to go. But we’d prefer Player 2 if Gyokeres gets sold. It’s therefore pointless to buy Player 1. It’s just a game of patience while the dominoes fall.

Eddie Jones called his England Rugby subs ‘finishers’, meaning some players started, some finished. Everyone one in a squad has a chance to perform and make a difference, we still need some squad players ( not backups).

The thing with the windfall from the gyokeres and hamer transfers we need to remember is we will probably owe a % of whatever we get to Brighton and Zwolle. So it may not be as much as people think.

I can't remember if we negotiated with Sporting to pay the bonuses already to Brighton for the first transfer? Either way, I think it's already less than people realise particularly with Gyokeres because people often forget it's EUR not GBP 🤣 .

If you assume the Brighton % is 10% then you'd maybe kick back about 760K GBP to them, if Gyokeres moved for 100M EUR.

I don’t get why people are against the idea of having more than one player for a position? 😂
Maybe “backup” is the wrong word, call it what you want, but depth is what we need. We shouldn’t just have one RB and when that player gets injured or needs resting it means we’re bringing in a CB or CDM or whoever to fill that role.

Thought the deal was 24m euros all in total?

Portugal media now reports 24m euros paid already, with further 3m in an additional objective and sell on fee reduction payment bringing to 27m euros.

I think that’s the whole point that’s being made. We won’t have starters and “back ups”. We’ll have a squad.

Oh fair enough, I still think it’s easier to say “backup RB” than “a player who has the ability to play at RB” because we all know if we get in another RB-type player he’s going to be the backup for MVE 😂

If we're talking about rotation they are not back-ups, they are alternatives

Maybe I’m just using the word wrongly or something, but alternative/backup/cover are all essentially the same thing to me. Basically someone who can step in for a player and not be playing outside of their “normal” position, e.g. Eccles can play RB but if he does then both the CM and RB positions are weakened. I think we should be aiming to have multiple players that can play the same position as their primary role, e.g. Binks and Kitching.

Alternative and back up do not mean the same thing at all.
Alternative implies a choice, back up implies 2nd choice.

Every player we bring in needs to be a starter or someone the club believes will develop into one. Unless we have league leading player in a given position, we’ll need to upgrade this position at some point.

Our stated aims is to build a team capable of promotion and to then stay up. We’re just not doing that if we’re relying on ‘backup’ players like Allen, Palmer, Andrews, Burroughs, Obikwu and so on.

And thats exactly what your squad is. If they weren’t considered able to start they wouldn’t be there. It’s why we’ve offloaded the likes of Moore, Kelly and Godden. But you’ll not find a club in the world where the strength in every position is equal no matter who starts. That’s just not possible - although some here can’t understand why that can’t be the case.

They do not need to be equally strong, just players you’d actually be happy to have in the starting XI

Oh fairs, I’ve just been thinking of them as similar things tbh. Either way I feel like we could do with a secondary player that’s primarily a RB in addition to a CM and ST.

Hull bid 2.5m for Thomas-Asante and supposedly one of a number of clubs interested. Seems like he is available for the right fee. Hull would be able to offer more money and game time too him.

Just seen on Twitter, middlesborough in for Aaron Connolly. Wonder if we were having a look at him. I remember a rumour on here about a 24 year old striker who hadn’t had the best of years coming in as a back up but everyone said it was BTA from West Brom.

Decent enough as a back up but not sure how much he played for Hull last year? I wouldn't mind K. Dembele who's on a free, he can play as a striker I'm sure is quick and skillfull.

I wonder if there will be any movement with Ntelo and Bernede this week but there's things going on the background 100% and with the club being tighter then a ducks arse on players we can only wait till they sign.
