How does it?

I think Rose is probably the best passer amongst the CBs, and Robins has said along the same lines (think it may have been last season he said it).

Again the whole left footed thing gets way over played and this is not specific to the Rose v JCS debate - would you rather England played Tyrone Mings than Harry Maguire at LCB in the Euros just because he's left footed? No, you play Maguire because he's the better defender (though has been absolute shite for Utd recently!)

Same way it buggered Hyam last season. Comparing our CBs to England internationals is a little ridiculous.

I'm not comparing their ability, I'm comparing the simple fact of left foot vs right foot.

Rose hasn't put a foot wrong this season and was the best defender against Blackburn.

It's all very well being left footed but if JCS keeps putting in performances like Luton and last night then which foot he kicks the ball with is irrelevant.

You’ve clearly got a thing about JCS. I thought he was no worse than Hyam last night TBH.

I have yes, because his positioning is awful.

I said it after his debut and was told it was his first game he needs time to settle in. Then Luton happened and I was told it was a one off. Then last night happened and a few people are now highlighting his mistakes.

I know you're not asking for it (nobody is!) but I will do a big long post later showing his poor positioning

All of our back line make mistakes TBH. It’s why I wanted two new CBs in in the summer.

I don't think so. He played right side of the three last season and it was Hyam who filled in (inadequately I'd say) in the left side of three. JCS is the only naturally left footer among the 4 of them and offers more balance.

Games like last night and Luton it appeared he had two left feet! But to be fair to him he has also had a few excellent games, so it's a consistency issue.

I think MR needs to recognise those games he's off the pace and be willing to change it. It's good to have a natural left footer in the back three for balance, but it's better to have three right footers than one left footer who's having a 'mare..

What did last night and Luton have in common?

Both had Hamer on his own with Allen and O'Hare in front.

Maybe that's why JCH and Maatsen got overrun in both games, there was no DM going out that way to cover.
Can't be mate. Sheaf is shit, lazy and doesn't tackle remember.

Dabo is overrated by our fan base, can't beat the majority of full backs in this league, largely poor passing, he struggles to make 10 yard passes at times, terrible crosser of the ball, against the weaker full backs, he runs riot, but those are few and far between at this level. Haven't seen enough of Kane to say hes better or not overall, but he's got a killer cross on him and we know he can put goals on a plate for the forwards. He seems very aggressive in the tackle too, I think he deserves a chance.

Isn't it a good thing to have two left feet if you are playing on the left?

Looking forward to this post. I really don’t see the poor positioning you’re on about. Lack of urgency at times maybe.

Can’t play Rose on the left. It completely nullifies both him and Maatsen. I’d have him in ahead of Hyam maybe.

Just think we’re seeing the impact of not bolstering the defence over the summer.
I agree. I think Rose has done ok when asked upon on the left defensively, but its attacking and playing progressively thay gets hindered by playing a right footer on the left centre back. And Rose is by far pur best passing centre back, but the games he has filled in, it looks unbalanced in possession

Matty James went off injured for Brizzle City last night, a foot injury apparently and a big doubt and miss for them on Saturday.
It all went pear shaped when he was subbed.

So this is what I mean by JCS' (lack of) positioning.

He is constantly higher up than the other defenders. I don't know if it's ball watching or what but he is always 5 or 10 yards higher up than the other two and leaves a gaping hole in behind him which is so easy to exploit.

The second picture shows him getting caught pressing too high which is another fault and he gets turned.

Pictures 1, 3 and 4 are almost identical - 5 yards higher for no reason whatsoever and just begging for Swansea to slip the ball in the gap behind him. People slate Maatsen's positioning but look, he's deeper than JCS and covering his man in those three examples.

These were all just from the first 20 minutes of last night then I got bored. It's not like I had to go through 3 or 4 games worth to get these examples.

And it's not just last night.

Here's Derby's goal. Hyam gave the ball away higher up the pitch than JCS' starting position and he's made up more ground than JCS who just ambles back and then makes the laziest attempt at closing down.

jcs6.png

Actually that's's not the laziest attempt at closing down. This is. He's been at it for years!

I don´t think him and Maatsen are anywhere near good enough to be honest.

Two positions we needed to strengthen and we didn´t.

That Bristol Rovers clip is one of the laziest pieces of defending I've ever seen haha

Taking away from these stills , what we also have to remember is we play a way that allows our left and right centre halves to progress up the pitch , so a couple of these are easy to explain .

If you want rigid , then we take that option away and stay as a unit throughout

I dont think Rose is the answer

Yeah of course, they are encouraged to progress up the pitch and I am fine with that.

My issue is that in all of those examples he is not progressing up the pitch with the ball. The opposition have the ball, he is nowhere near it, yet he's consistently out of position

Absolutely shocking :ROFLMAO:

But going back to how JCS fits into our team. I do believe our best CB 3 is JCS, Fadz and either Rose or Hyam. I think JCS gets left woefully exposed by Maatsen a lot of the time.

He certainly made a mistake for the opening goal last night but overall I have been impressed with his start to the season. He was apparently brilliant at Hull if you listen to the people that went, and more often than not he has been brilliant when I have watched him.

Lad I know plays for the u18s and was training with the first team in preseason. He told me Dabo used to stay behind after every training session and practice whipping a cross around a mannequin.

Unfortunately he had to stop after the first week as he’d already took the head off all 25 mannequins in the set.

But look at images 1, 3 & 4 from my post. Maatsen is perfectly in position covering his man, JCS has gone wandering.

I appreciate they are stills and stills don't always tell the whole story. I also accept that Maatsen is often caught high up the field and I'm not saying he's blameless. But he has to attack and he will spend plenty of time up the pitch, so the defence has to be able to cope with that. We manage fine on the right side when Dabo is high up the pitch.

And also I'm not saying JCS is bad every game, he has put in some really good performances I don't deny that. He was good against Fulham and Hull, to name two.

I wouldn’t bring Kane in yet, his final ball is far superior but if we want to play on the front foot Dabo is the option. Saying that, his form isn’t great, I’m hoping it’s temporary and not the step up.

No way I’d drop Gyokeres. He hasn’t scored or been quite as pivotal but the ball sticks to him, he’s happy to run at players and he’s always an option. He still offers more as an overall striker, and the international break hopefully offers him the rest he needs (assuming he isn’t called up again?!).

JCS is either bang average or absolutely on it. He sometimes looks lackadaisical (thankfully not as bad as that Bristol clip) but I do think the left foot advantage is important. Saying that Rose is a good passer of the ball so os maybe worth a go to see if he can link with Maasten.

I find some of those stills a bit disingenuous to be honest. It was clear we had no left sided midfield cover yesterday - it needed one of JCS or Maatsen to step out to Ntcham (who is the player JCS is pressing in all of those images from last night) and the other to pick up the winger. It looked like a conscious decision and it was actually reversed at half time, with JCS covering the winger and Maatsen pressing higher.

I don’t think he’s perfect by any stretch - in fact I think he’s been a bit lax at times - but the examples you’ve provided strike me more as tactical.

Definitely, in pretty much all of those screenshot he has had to step in to press into midfield, because there's either no midfielder in there (Swansea) or Maatsen is too far out of position (Derby).

Thats one of the flexibilities of 3 at the back, that if one presses you have cover behind you.

It looks as though JCS is out of position but he is having to put pressure on the ball and cover someone else

I would say Kane does play on the front foot but does it in a different way to Dabo. Dabo likes to drive with the ball, but Kane attacks the space to run on to passes in a way it means Kane often gets it in more space than Dabo.

But it's not just last night, it's every game, whether we've had midfield cover or not (and I agree we were extremely light in midfield last night).

He's not pressing in some of those images, he's just simply out of position.

Every player has weak points, for O'Hare it's finishing and for JCS it's positioning. Look at that Bristol rovers clip, it's clearly an issue he's had throughout his career.
