Yes, but equally, none of us here (afaik) are scouts and know anything about football to the degree our recruitment team does.

Some of the shouts made on this thread proves that. Probably my shout of Helik included!

Well to be fair we were apparently scouting Shankland shortly after I mentioned him the first time. Not bad for a whinging chino wearing streak of piss 🤪

The alternative is to sell those players and reinvest. tbh I wouldn't be averse to that, but suspect the reaction among fans would be somewhat worse!

Well it’s what I assumed the plan was and was pretty ok with it being the case. Just confused that we seem to have done a 180 on it!

The problem then is that you have to get players in who aren't proven high level championship quality. It's stating the obvious, but O'Hare, Hamer have nice fat contracts because they're now proven high level championship quality.

Doing it the way you and I would be OK with wouldn't get us a side to compete for promotion either. It might get more value within the squad as a whole, but if they didn't gel and / or took a while to bed in, and we're sitting around 15th-19th, then I suspect fans wouldn't be overly enthused with the plan, or with Robins remaining as manager. Plus if they went on to do well elsewhere the cry would be we'd sold our assets cheap, as per Wilson etc.

It's a fickle world.

So you'd have been fine if we had sold Harmer, Gyokeres and O'Hare for relatively small amounts because they all wanted to go as their contracts weren't extended or commensurate with their abilities?

The way I'm looking at it is whats gone out that we need to/ have replaced them with

So

Shipley / Jones out - Kasey Palmer in. Definite improvement
Drysdale / Pask / JCS - awaits to be seen
Dacosta - Not a position we needed to replace so bank the wage and add somewhere else
Maatsen - remains to be seen
Waghorn / Walker - remains to be seen

Of course I've made a couple of assumptions on outgoings but from the ITK's on here, a fair guess at who we're binning off

So we have improved on the CAM position to help OHare as long as Palmer is announced

Lets wait and see on the other 3 key positions

I’m not really referring to O’Hare or Gyo-we need them on longer contracts so we can maximise whatever bids we get. But Kane, Bidwell, Allen, Kelly, now seemingly McF. It looks like a move away from how we were operating before.

Kane and Bidwell established Championship players. Bidwell, in fact, likes a playoff place. Allen deserves a better contract for getting better, and is now an established championship player himself, of course. Kelly too for achievement. The fact he didn't feature much last season so, because of that, makes the contract look overvalued in hindsight doesn't alter that. McFadzean is apparently on very little compared to the others. As vice captain, and mainstay of defence, and having also improved, can you blame him for wanting more money? the question is, to replace McFadzean, how much wages would we have to spend to get someone performing at his level? if it's the same as he earns now, then all well and good. If more, then McFadzean should be paid more too.

Kelly's contract extension was nonsensical. His injury record is worsening, he's the wrong side of 30 and he's nowhere near good enough to start at this level.

Yet he was awarded a 2-year contract and became one of our highest earners.

Captain, key in getting us promoted, key in keeping us in this division. If getting a championship wage for that is nonsensical, then we're going down because we won't have anyone on anything but League One wages.

How many games will he start next season? I don’t argue with what he’s done for us lower down the ladder but equally the club doesn’t owe anyone a living when it’s finances are tight.

But that's retrospective. Doesn't alter the fact he deserved the contract when he signed it - his influence on that season was obvious. Would he deserve that contact if signing it now? Probably not. But that's not an issue or an option.

Am I imagining things or did he not sign an extension this season?

He's played an important part in our journey but his contract extension was driven by nothing more than sentiment and it was a poor decision that will only serve to restrict our ability to bring players in.

He's likely to be 3rd, perhaps even 4th choice depending on Eccles' role next season yet you consider that a wise use of budget?

He is the captain so fully deserves it in my opinion.

Robins doesn’t do sentiment, you should know this by now

And when signed, based on his performances, there was every indication he would continue to be key to the side. As McFadzean has been, in fact.
Was it? We were looking to sign Matty James at the time and were obliged to sign Sheaf. Maybe the terms were such that we had to sign if he'd played so many games because it otherwise seems an odd decision.

Personally I'd have not bothered with James. Now *that* would have been a waste of money IMO (and I guess I was proved right there!). Of course, it could always have been the case that Kelly was the fall back if James didn't sign, much as AN other will be with Clarke-Salter.

Or, of course, the plan could have been four first choice CMs in Hamer, James, Kelly, Sheaf, of course. I mean, at some point somebody will always look worse value after the event, won't they? Tyler Walker being a fine recent example, but both Kelly and Walker have looked worse value partly because Sheaf and Gyokeres have looked better value than maybe expected.
