I’ll be honest Rice was not good enough to warrant being ever present. Wharton should have got some minutes
We don’t have any individual currently good enough to be considered ever present, yet Southgate has repeatedly had 7 or 8 considered undroppable this tournament no matter how tired or out of form they looked.

Spain lost the best holding midfielder in the world at half time and didn’t miss a beat with his replacement (could even say they looked more dangerous at times).

We just didn’t have the quality in midfield or the balance up front. Rice and Mainoo both too poor on the ball. We never got the best out of any of our forwards for a sustained period. We need a manager who can make tough decisions to get the best team out and not just the best XI.

Looks like the Copa America final is having fan issues like we had in the Euro 2020 final, ticketless fans rushing the stadium. Locked everything down.

kick off delayed half an hour at least

Bottom line is, we played 7 games in that tournament and only played well in 1 of them.

We started tepidly and ineptly and just carried that on in the same manner throughout

Kane was very poor all tournament and really should have been dropped.

Bellingham looked very jaded and should have been rested. If we haven't got enough quality to beat the likes of Slovakia without him, we have a very, very huge problem.

Walker was poor throughout the competition too and Rice just wasn't the Rice we have come to expect for England.

Foden only had one good game.

Only real bright spots for me were Mainoo, Guehl, having Shaw back and I think Saka had a good tournament too.

Everything else, was very much just in fits and starts..

Too many times we got ourselves ahead, or back into games, only to then sit deep and hand the impetus back to the opposition

I agree. Mostly a tournament for us of absolutely dire football, with some sprinkles of individual magic that got us out of jail.

It’s all ifs and buts, but put us on the other side of that draw and we would be out by the last 16 or quarter finals. I fear now that we struck gold twice really in terms of the lucky draw and I don’t think we will see something like that again.

Thanks for the memories Gareth but time to move on now, need a manager who can get the best out of these players and we need to actually win something.

Palmer looks promising for the future too of course.

Southgate finally plays decent team and loses shocker. Tbh I'm genuinely surprised he managed to beat Holland, that's about as good as its got for the lucky clown.
Just think how much more he's getting paid than an actual good manager like Robins! Eye watering.

Walker was superb first half - he took Williams out of the game to such an extent that he switched to the right. I don't know what Southgate said to him at half-time, but must've been something like "defend narrower, Kyle". Williams was just given free rein the whole of the second half.
I thought we played with flair at times, but as someone has said here, moments of individual brilliance rather than a system, which Spain have. England are a rag-tag "group" (as Southgate calls them). Probably why he doesn't call them a team - because they aren't. But to be a successful team you need leaders, and Southgate and Kane don't do that, for me.
Well played, Spain.

I thought at the start of the tournament the press had got fed up with Southgate as before it was Gareth this and that and it became Southgate.

For the next managers contract the salary needs to be much less but big bonuses to win tournaments.

100% correct

we move on, we need to

He Has a point, we were frightened to go and win games, we only played when we went behind, and when we scored we stopped playing again.

Southgate's loyalty to kane was a massive problem, everyone could see Kane was knackered, and had no service in the box.

Watkins and Palmer gave us far more options, with their pace and movement.
I think Southgate has taken us as far as he can.

I’m no Southgate fan but are we sure it’s all about the manager. I mean it’s not a new thing that we fail with a team apparently “the envy of the world”. It’s happened under numerous managers. We fawn over Bellingham and Foden but other countries have half a dozen players of that calibre. Maybe what we think is great is what other countries thing of as the standard

He has the footwork and will thrive in the billionaires paradise of Real but is he the full package?

His passing at times is diabolical , all tournament too , takes too many touches and gets dispossessed in silly areas .

I don't think we can look away from Southgate really .. let's take turkey or Georgia and even Romania.

They played better attacking football than England , as I said last night we play like a team trying to survive more than one trying to thrive it's so boring and negative

I suspect it's because of the wank-fest over the Premier League being "the best in the world" - failing to remember that many of the stars who the top teams centre their tactics on are, in fact, other than English. I genuinely don't know what they do in training - a lot of the time, the players look like they don't know each other, let alone whatever "system" they are being told to play to.

Getting to the final has masked how poor we’ve been really. We were 30 seconds from going out to Slovakia. Inept and poor individual performances. GS has come out tonight and basically said Kanes not fit. Why play players who aren’t fit when we have good players in the squad. GS has done wonders for us but time for a change now.
