After England’s poor loss to Iceland, there’s some news to make us feel better:
- Portugal losing to Croatia
- Italy unconvincing against Bosnia
- France drawing with Canada 0-0
- Wales lost (and they’re staying home)

Train on Saturday morning to Brussels. Staying in Essen, Frankfurt and Hamburg until 1st July. Got a flight to Dusseldorf on the 4th and a flight back from Berlin on 15th July and will head down to join the family in Woolacombe for the week from there. Followed by Darmstadt for the pre season game a week after that. Good couple of months ahead. Counting down the days.

Yep, it’s not that far at all. I’ve been before with work but never got the chance to look around properly. Plus I don’t want to spend the whole week just drinking.

Flying out on the 19th to Frankfurt and after Slovenia, I’ll be basing myself in Brussels between all the games after the Group Stages because I’ll be working.

Perhaps I’ll see you one or both of you out there!

According to the BBC, Trent (I don't know why all the commentators only call him that. They don't do it for Bukayo) is in line to start on Sunday.

🤷

Literally the only time I’d even think about using him at CM would be if we were playing a counter attacking game, but even then I’d be concerned by his defensive frailty.

In midfield I assume , always the defensive aspect in mind with Gareth , fact

The international game is more defensive than the club game, fact.

Do you mean slower and less intense ?

Defensive because most teams playing against eachother have the ranking difference of let's say coventry playing bedworth ?

Just because the game might be more defensive doesn't mean the better team needs to play more defensive players , that's backward thinking

The clue was in the squad numbers to be fair. I don’t think there’s an obvious and convincing CM partner for Rice. Bellingham at CAM can hardly be considered a negative move either as Foden hasn’t been great for England, Palmer has only had a few caps and Saka is a deserving starter.

It’s good that we’ve got a lot of good players from the bench to make an impact in the 2nd half / extra time.

Even the best teams in world football are defensive. Coaches get less time with players, the nature of matches is different with less games and KO games being 1 leg.

In any case, before we got knocked out in 2022 we were the top scorers in the tournament and set a record for England highest goal tally at a World Cup. Argentina and France scored 2 and 3 more goals (respectively) than us despite scoring 6 (and 5) goals in the semi final and finals each.

In 2020, we were one of the top scorers in that tournament and indeed in 2018. This narrative that Southgate is too defensive doesn’t really hold much ground. It’s based on qualification and friendlies which is just not important.

Right but football is a different game now isn't it ? Defenders that can't defend largely and international teams far worse than they used to be .. citing England scoring goals in weaker tournaments doesn't do anything for me really , have we ever had easier runs ? Southgate is still shite

Absolutely get that the successful teams at international level tend to be defensively solid, but fuck I’d love to see us properly go at a tournament.

Like Italy did in the last euros ? They were exciting and aggresive , And even then England went 1 up and sat back which fucked us

You’re not going to change your mind so I won’t try to change your mind. We’ve had easy runs in the past and bottled it.

Southgate, even if this is his last tournament, has been a success for turning the tide of the national team.

France, perhaps the most successful international team in the last 8 years have Deschamps who is always accused of not being attacking enough. It’s a feature of international management.

International football is no longer the pinnacle of football and hasn’t been for a long time.

Did we not go for it in Qatar? If Kane bags that penalty, we had momentum to win that game and with a semi against Morocco, every chance to make the final.

Nobody thinks it is , but last euros we beat the worst German team in history , Ukraine Scotland and the worst Czech team in years .. lost to Italy at home in the final .

Last world cup we scored 6 against Iran who were diabolical on the day and we still conceded 2 .

Deschamps has won something for France, Gareth is lauded for failing every time .. there's a difference, enjoy us losing in Germany 👍

Failed in 2018 , nations league 2019 , 2021 , 2022 and relegated us in the nations league 2022 , will fail miserably in Germany , can't beat good teams and both routes have 3 top 10 opponents to beat to win it

Don't waste your money

You’re reading this wrong - I’m not overly critical of Southgate. I get why he values defensive solidity above attacking flair. But (and I appreciate I’m being slightly churlish) Man City play with a single pivot and 2 attacking midfielders. We could replicate that setup and have some real fun. Ok it may not be successful and it’d be (rightly) used as a stick to beat Southgate with if we went out earlier than expected, but I’m just really intrigued to see how it’d get on.

That Czech team KO’d Netherlands, this is truly bending your narrative to suit what you’re arguing here.

Deschamps has been in charge of the French national team since 2012 and won one World Cup. Lost in the final v Portugal who finished 3rd in their group, won in 2018, 2020 got KO’d on penalties to Switzerland and lost in the final of 2022.

Likewise with Germany under Löw also failed at 3 major tournaments before winning the World Cup.

We weren’t favourites against Italy, they were truly the best team in the tournament and we lost on penalties - it is what it is.

Netherlands haven't been good for years lol
