Generally trying to not get to wrapped up in this for my own mental health, but I met up with an African friend this morning who asked me about my thoughts, then quickly told me the 'African' perspective in that they were all on Russia's side (I was more than a bit taken aback) Basically, as his own country is being economically 'raped' by France and the US have historically dabbled / interfered in Africa, he is of the opinion that Putin is doing the right thing. i am a good friend of the bloke, so shifted the conversation to CBS pitch invaders, after having gently probed the logic of Putin's actions (without much joy). Thought it was a combination of alarming/interesting hearing a somewhat alien viewpoint.

Your friend should watch what Kenya said at the UN about the invasion. Brilliant speech

Big if true, he is/was very close to Putin

There is so much disinformation from both sides, as you would expect in war, but this is a claim that the Russians can easily disprove if he is still alive. That they have not suggests the news to be accurate.

Apparently this conflict is costing Russia $20billion a day. Just goes to show the importance of financial restrictions and sanctions. I know that Russia has claimed to have costed sanctions in but it’s also pretty clear they believe that they’d breeze in so have they costed in the $20billion a day in past the first couple of days.
they had about 600bn in foreign currency reserves which are probably worth a lot less with the sanctions now in place. already more than doubled interest rates in past 12 months to try and control inflation.
Russia probably costed sanctions on the basis of having a quick win and installing a puppet govt. Then sanctions would be lifted fairly soon after. The fact that they had been boosting reserves over last 12 months another indicator of how long this has been planned despite all the talking.

Germany the first to announce a massive hike in its military spending. Others will follow. Falling into Cold War 2 at the very least.

Want to meet in Belarus but Ukrainians said they won't go there due to Belarus's involvement in the invasion . Apparently offered Budapest, Belgrade and some other cities as an alternative.

Ukraine should say yes if Russia agree to

Immediately withdraw everything
Pay reparations for all damage and loss of life
Renounce claims to Crimea and disputed eastern regions

In return Ukraine and NATO can agree that it will never become a member

Nice idea but Putin staked too much domestically on the Crimea & disputed territories.
He'd want Ukraine demilitarised and also not to join EU. Amnesty on war crimes.
And probably need to add a commitment to stop designs on the reformation of COMECON.

Of course if Putin no longer in charge everything probably less difficult to sort out.

Mmmm. Apparently there’s a leaked Russian document flying around that basically says that Russias demands are so ridiculous that they’ll never be agreed to and basically it’s a set up for Russia to say we tried but they wouldn’t negotiate.
Just can't see it. ATM Putin (rightly or wrongly) thinks he's negotiating from a position of strength.

The lack of proper info / disinformation is off the scale.
In thisyou’d half expect that proper information would be easier obtain.
Imagine what must have been like for the the generals in ww2 trying to keep on top of what was actually happening
