USSR invades Ukraine. (11 Viewers)

Which is what many an expert is saying. Russia may well take Ukraine, but simply will be unable to hold it.

Even if they take Ukraine, this could be drawn out for quite some time to come.

It only ends in Putin's downfall I feel, but that could be many years away and you have to wonder at what cost.
I agree. If Russia takes it they'd have to remain there for a long time to retain control and face resistance to that from the people. If they install a puppet government and remove their forces the people will show civic disobedience. It's going to be long and costly for Putin.

Every eventually end to this I can foresee involves Putin's demise. It is the same story for all dictators. It's just how many others die before we reach that point and how the instability in Russia sorts itself out afterwards.

Some of the thread comments on the link are right. It’s is also noticeable that the crowd is unarmed.

So literally do nothing? Just let Putin do what he wants.

That sounds a lot like appeasement.

Well military intervention would be illegal so either you think the sanctions will force a retreat or you believe in an act of illegality and also pure folly resulting in death and economic collapse throughout Europe

No not for me

I wish there was something we could do beyond playing the long game. Economically and politically we have to put on as much pressure as we can to isolate and hurt the Russian economy. If that means your average peaceful Russian citizens end up poorer by Putin's invasion and they in turn blame Putin all well and good. This isn't going to take months but years. The war in Ukraine will never end . The people of Ukraine will never accept what is happening and Putin will find he's dug himself into a hole he can't ever quite get out of.

In a decade , when Finland , Sweden and any other country who feared Russian aggression has joined NATO, Russia will have atomic bombs to throw around and nothing else. Putin will be long gone.

Yes you know Russia and it’s people - I have been and also know many in the uk and their nationalism and devotion and preparation for the worst is beyond what anyone on here who has zero direct experience with Russian culture can ever comprehend

I think you are right on a number of points there. This could go on for years.

And offer them what in return? Sanctions don’t matter to Putin, remember.

No they don’t even @PVA friend Trent figured that but his take the EU block are funding the murder of Ukraines a tad extreme

Ok so:

We can’t get involved militarily
We have to get gas off Russia or we can’t have our society
I think Ukraine may well be a European Syria and there’s nothing we can do about it

Bless all those children caught up in something beyond their control

So what does the west offer in its settlement with Russia then? Or do we just let them have Ukraine for free if they pinky swear not to do it again with another country a few years from now?

I've had him on ignore for months and it's the best thing I ever did. Has he gone out to Ukraine as a lone wolf behind-enemy-lines IRA infiltration unit ?

If we want sanctions demand the supply cut off not having a league table pissing contest about which oligarch we’ve been nasty to today

Out of interest hypothesise for minute and say sanctions as they stand have no impact. What then? Call him nasty names? What would you do?

I note you ignored my last post. As he has 500+ LinkedIn connections you can't really argue with him I suppose.

Well of course you can. Why do you just surround yourself with twitter views that suit your arguments and theories rather than actually look at independent analysis and form a few based on actually reading and researching?

But I thought LinkedIn connections is the one true determinant of how credible a source is? Make your mind up.

I absolutely guarantee I've read more on this topic than you have.

You're so ill informed you said Russia have captured 'a large proportion of major cities'. Which is utter, utter, rubbish.

Clearly some kind of settlement is the way out of this, but you have to go into talks from a position of strength, and with some kind of leverage over your opponent. That is de facto impossible if you go by your zero-sanction strategy.

Of course it’s not the main source but it does give a career history which in Trent’s case suggests his military knowledge is somewhat suspect

I’m sure you’ve read a lot on twitter but sadly it’s not really a place to go with a war - people make things up

They have taken the two major southern cities above crimea Mariupol and Khersen they are landing in Kharkiv have laid siege on a major airport and of course control the nuclear plant which gives 25% of Ukrainian energy

They have moved it seems to Bobyvritsa (?) near to the capital

I’m sure Putin expected less resistance but he has massive military might and you really seem to hoping rather than facing reality that this is going to get very ugly

When in your view will the sanctions work and the army as you put it “collapse”?
