Is there time?
It's what you'd do if that was the intention but a bit early for where it's at currently.
More of statement I think.
You'd have to assume Russia will take it as an attack on its territory
territory.
A bring it on moment?

An attack on Russia isn’t enough for a nuclear response according to Russian military doctrine. It has to be an existential threat to Russia. They’ve been doing this thing for months where they get all Dante rattley then quietly come out after and repeat that they don’t have a strike first doctrine.

I’d expect a “test” on Russian territory at worst which allows them plausible deniability. And I wouldn’t expect that to be taken seriously.

We don't need to? Wouldn't it save a lot more Ukrainian lives, time and resources if we did?

What would be the impact of stepping in with those nations still on the fence with Russia? Far better for the locals to continue pushing them out with our assistance as they’ve shown themselves more than capable of doing.

I do think the Yanks should stop holding back and give them some serious kit to get the job done now they’ve proven themselves though. Not sure if that also applies to us but if so then us too.

The rumour about nukes I’ve seen is a low yield test somewhere on the borders. If that happens NATO will step in an wipe the Russians from the map, China will abandon them completely and Putin will like be defenestrated. So I can’t see it. Been no words from Yank intelligence that they’re even preparing for it yet though.

The threat of nukes is way more useful to Russia than actually using them.

I wonder if they’re softening up the bridges for an attach on the south. They did similar in the West before launching their offensive
Putin would be killer way before he gets his nukes up, I’m sure the us and nato have plans in place already “if they suspect it” they can “end him”.

The inevitable strike(s) on Kiev in response to the Crimean bridge. Wonder if it's been aimed at anything specific infrastructure wise, or at the population, to create a (further) terror threat? Hope as few as possible casualties. Sad sad times. War )in general) really is madness.

Considering the targets hit so far are: a footbridge in a park, a children’s play area, the busiest street in Kyiv at rush hour, the Samsung HQ and some museums…

Its a terrorist attack by a failed state. Time to step up our response in the West TBH. Starting with more air defence.

He is flexing his muscle to show he can reach everywhere - he is well pissed with the attack on the bridge - shame it didnt take the railway line out

Literally everything he does pushes his allies further away from him and strengthens his enemies/brings them together.

It's impossible to overstate just how badly he's fucked everything up all for... well nothing really.

Putin probably had to show ‘strength’ after the bridge bombing. He’s getting desperate

Then attack the actual Ukrainian Army, don't do something that reviles the one world power that still deals with you and makes the west even more determined to see you lose.

Someone needs to explain what a pyrrhic victory is to him.

Its not for outside Russian borders. More likely to appease the mentalists on the right at home.

Who'll be back at his throat as soon as the UA gains more towns and cities.

All the while the west gives the UA even more equipment to fight russia and it's old men armed with soviet area weapons

I think China still does not recognize Crimea as part of Russia either.
Putin cannot afford to alienate China.
China is in the unenviable place where it really wants to stick one up to teh west but it really needs the west to use their manufacturing plants as the outlook for chinas economy isn't all that great now

There is some pretty gruesome footage around. Modern Warfare with bells on. Ukraine’s advance/clearing of villages is fast and decisive.

I’ve been reading Tim Marshall’s book Prisoner’s of Geography (2015) Well researched and not at all surprising that Ukraine went the way it did, given it’s history.

Nato’s weakness driven by Europe’s in2014/ ambivalence and self-interest due to high dependence on gas and oil etc. Russia ruled Ukraine for over 200 years. Tim cited all of the areas of the current battle as being key areas for Russia.

Crimea, the only warm port of Sebastopol available (Through lease) to the Russian fleet.

i guess Putin will not stop throwing bodies into this conflict? Hence, a change of leadership is likely to be the only option.
Great book

Absolutely mental what military kit costs isn’t it? I’m sure it’s justified with redundancy and the best quality most reliable components and whatever, but $140m for what appears to be a truck is just insane.

Actually, reading up a bit more I think that guy in the tweet is being a bit misleading and is massively exaggerating.

That equipment cannot completely defend an entire city from a missile attack.

Also:

But the contract for the IRIS-T systems includes 12 weeks of training Ukrainians to use them, Nicholas Fiorenza, of the British intelligence analysis firm Janes, warned.

“I don’t see them starting to have an impact before next spring,” he said.

Ive always wondered about this, I’ve seen reports of Ukrainians video calling with NATO people for help fixing equipment or whatever. Seemingly that doesn’t cross a line. I wonder whether you could start using them with basically a shadow crew helping out on Zoom while you’re being trained.

I’ve actually wondered whether you can’t just have the remote controlled from a semi in Dorset or whatever but I assume it’s too risky if discovered.

I don't really want them stomping around in my semi in Dorset!
