Ah, the old stats don't count if they don't backup my gut feeling argument.Which does show the flaw in cold statistical data
Stats mean nothing, illustrate nothing, are flawed, open to manipulation and interpretation. Just go with what you see on the pitch.

In relation to player performance/value. I agree you can use them if you are, for instance, measuring the daily temperature but that’s as pointless as saying the league table is made up of them. They will tell you nothing about a players ability. Why didn’t we get promoted last season?
The league table is just a collection of stats, means nothing.
I guess the question is with two more years development would they... he did come on leaps and bounds last year.Well no as it seems clubs are prepared to pay £10 plus for Sheaf which they will not for Eccles

If kitching won more headers and tackles and got more blocks in than Lionel Messi last season, does it mean that he's a better player and therefore worth more? Why didn’t we get promoted last season?

When a defender makes a tackle is it because they were caught out of position
it'll tell you how good they are, but nothing significant.Number of goals scored doesn’t tell you about a striker? Number of tackles won doesn’t tell you about a defender? Nonsense.
Probably get massively slated for this but whenever I hear of a potential transfer the first thing I do is type in the players name followed by the words “fifa 24”. Clearly not an official or proper way of monitoring a player’s ability but gives you a quick idea of what the general consensus is of that player and what they’re good/bad at.
Obviously the best thing to do is watch them in person but even highlight reels can show a biased point of view of a player’s ability. Very hard to give an accurate depiction of anyone’s ability unless you follow them week in week out.
Tenner for Eccles - 1968 hit for The Hollies, or did I mishear It?Well no as it seems clubs are prepared to pay £10 plus for Sheaf which they will not for Eccles
Tribute song incoming!!Tenner for Eccles - 1968 hit for The Hollies, or did I mishear It?
...do you have any figures to support that. It's so obvious that both stats and subjective opinion are really important in judging a player. Football is both a science and an art.
To suggest that either are a complete waste of time is frankly batshit.
Yeh pretty much this. If you want to shop in a big pond you really need the stats to narrow it down. Then you go and watch to get the whole picture. So you use stats, albeit very subjective ones. I tend to hop on FotMob and see what their statistical breakdown is compared to others in that respective league playing in that position. The idea that stats are worthless is for the birds; if that’s the case, then why do clubs have data analysis departments at all? The data creates your shortlist, the eye test gives clarity over which ones are worth pursuing.

It's in there now is it?All he needs is to play next to Sheaf
I've given it a like Fernando because I'm sure it's brilliant, but the truth is I have no idea what you mean! All he needs is to play next to Sheaf
Of course watching the player will tell you more, but one can only watch so much football.Stats are useful but they absolutely do not tell you everything. Watching the player will always tell you more. The obsession with basic stats is very American.

Yeh I know, I've literally said that further down. I also agree Sheaf is better than Eccles. This forum is very argumentative outside of the football season.Of course watching the player will tell you more, but one can only watch so much football.
Still, Sheaf is better. And Eccles is yet to hit even his level of 2 years ago.
...just wait until the euros start....This forum is very argumentative outside of the football season.
