He also exudes calm and seems super focused. I must admit, I was a bit surprised how wayward his first touch was at times but I think that was where lack of confidence was showing. And 100%, he either scores or pulls defences apart. I’ve always loved a striker who can rough up centre halves. They don’t like it up ‘em!

His confidence grew as the season went on and he really began to put himself about . He's a proper handful for any defence and his overall game improved hugely over last season. He's developed a great understanding with Haji and this combined with Saka coming back will push him on even further . As I've said elsewhere our attack looks extremely strong.

From what I see Eccles is quickly catching up with Sheaf. Sheaf does one role. But Eccles was introduced as a wing back, then his more natural defensive midfield role. Then towards the end of last season in a more advanced wide role?

Still some rough edges to smooth out but I think long term Eccles has more potential than Sheaf? Another big season for Eccles and he needs to step up again.

I remember early on in his first season Mark Robins was asked what he thought Eccles potential was? His reply was something like, "Anything he wants to be. It's down to what he believes he can be."

Mark Robins doesn't really big youngsters up. But I felt he had full confidence in Eccles attributes and the only ingredients missing were confidence and belief.

I think that the difference this season is that it will be more about the squad than previously. I've got a feeling that there will be more serious competition for first team starts.

It’s difficult to coach ‘sharpness’ and pre season games aren’t usually that high tempo or physically competitive. (maybe he can strengthen up in the gym).
He basically needs plenty of Championship games and lots more time on the pitch.
His Championship games last season, only 1 assist in 15 games, wasn’t spectacular so he’s got plenty to work on to go up a level or two.

Eccles is definitely improving and his developmental last season was the most significant, there was a clear step up in his play.

He probably has more to his all round game than Sheaf (for example he’s happy to make forward runs) but he isn’t as good as Sheaf on the ball or technically in my view.

I really hope he continues to develop and does so with us.

Sheaf’s stat wheel shows that in the Championship, he’s the best defensive playmaker in the league - in the 95%+ in a lot of facets in the stat wheel. I’ve not seen Eccles stat wheel but it’s probably not as good as Sheaf’s.

The next level for Sheaf and Eccles to improve in the final third - neither get many assists from open play nor many goals. A quick comparison of all our CMs and AMs this season v Hamer in 22/23 tells a story. Last season you had Hamer and Vik dragging us through games.

With a pre-season to up his fitness and tactical understanding I'm hoping we'll be seeing Torp's better performances on a more consistent basis next season.

Yep.

He'll benefit from a full pre season, also hopefully a better and stronger 11. He definitely has quality, hopefully he can show it!

On the pace argument I’d say Bobby Thomas has a bit of it, the way he’s one end for a corner and the other team hits the counter his recovery running is rapid the amount of times he’s stopped a counter attack or got back in time to slow it

Couldn’t agree more, we need a midfield that’s confident on the ball and can pick out passes for our attackers to score from, not players that pass the ball sideways for the sake of it. I think Torp will be cracking for us this season, him, Sheaf and Stamenic in midfield would be great to see if Stamenic gels in well.
