With Walker he just needs this season to end, go away and have a good Summer break, and put this season behind him. Come next pre season he can then start again and treat it as a fresh start and a fresh opportunity. Hopefully if he stays injury free and can get his confidence up he might yet play his part for us. Much depends on his own outlook of course, and whether he has it in him to do that.

Agreed. Clean slate in the summer and hopefully he can sort his head out and has a chance to prove himself.
Can't see us signing a 20 goal a season striker so he should get an opportunity with Waghorn likely leaving and Godden's injury record

I felt it was totally the wrong call yesterday, we were sluggish and needed some speed injected, take Allen off of course, but at that stage I would have let Tavares have a run out, not Waghorn, with the turning speed of a brontasaurus
I thought he was the right sub but came on too late. You could see 5 minutes into the second half that Bournemouth had changed formation and tactics, had dropped deep so there was little space to exploit in behind, and we lack physicality up front, Gyokeres and O'Hare were getting knocked off the ball and their defenders were finding it too easy to defend and isolate the pair of them.

At 3 nil though it was too late the game was gone.

3-0 down and bringing on Waghorn, McFadzean and Kelly seemed pretty pointless I thought.

I’ve nothing against any of the three of them but we know what they do and they weren’t going to get us back in the game. If we’d already given up (and Bournemouth were hardly going to try and score 6 when they were comfortable at 3-0) then at least try and change something by bringing on someone with pace or with something to prove.

been thinking about Waghorn, and was wondering if he is the difference between us making the playoff's or not, sounds crazy i know,
but had he chipped in withanother 5-6 goals than he has, might of been enough points gained to make the playoff's,

Got to be in the side to do that
he started off well, got injured and has mainly featured as a sub in cameos since his return

5-6 goals more isn’t too much to ask for his 45k a week really

He’s undoubtedly the reason why we’re not in the playoffs this year. We’ve been scrabbling for cash all season and failing to strengthen in key positions, because we gambled a huge chunk of the budget on a player who’s barely contributed.

If we want to get promoted, we can’t afford to get signings like this wrong, and this year we did.

I would be blaming the owners for not giving us some help in January but sure let’s blame individual players

So our players get a pass because our owners are tight? I expect more from our owners but I expect the players to offer a return on their salary too. Do you think Waghorn has played like the highest paid player at the club this year?

he was injured for some time and had Covid to be fair to him

Give more leeway to Waghorn and Walker than the manager, curious

Not really I’ve said Waghorn generally hasn’t worked out but in fairness to the player he was heavily featured at the start of the season which was by far the most succesful period of it

There was a stage where it seemed Gyko flourished when alongside Waghorn and I thought he’d be a good signing because of his championship experience but it just hasn’t worked and zero goals too. For him to stay he needs to chip in.

Im told he is one of, if not the highest earner at the club so it’s time he moved on. I’d have thought it will be back to derby and reduced wages

He’s been unfortunate with injuries and recovery, as can often be the case with players over 30. Either way he’s been of little use to us.

nor has Kelly

Waghorn scored in a 2-0 win early in the season at the CBS (M'Boro ?)

I don’t suppose as it’s all relative much different to when we signed Ogogo and Junior Brown when back in league 1

they were considered a coup at the time and Neither worked out

Also a bad signing! Albeit not as costly as Waghorn.

Did anyone consider signing Waghorn a coup?

I thought it was a good signing at the time - a championship player with bags of experience - good at set pieces as well - we’d gone from biamou Bakayoko and effectively got in goyekeres and waghorn as well as godden and Walker.

Agreed. I thought it was a cute signing at the time. Not all signings will work out

Are you serious that Liam Kelly was a bad signing after what he has done for us since league 2?

Steve - we are not in league 2

I was pretty impressed with the signing to be honest.

Probably with exception to James, it was the first example of us actually being able to attract a Championship quality player with previous pedigree.

Sadly it just hasn't worked out.

He was decent a few years before we signed him the pedigree you mention was not at all obvious the season before we signed him. It seems the saying it's not where you have been but where your at applied and he was not playing at the levels we needed. It could have worked as different systems etc. can bring the best out of players but in hindsight we should have used his sizeable wages to buy or loan another ACM an area we have not produced enough goals from all season.

Wish Waghorn all the best, he seems a decent pro but it would probably be best he moved on this summer.

Exactly, thanks to the likes of Kelly.

So that justifies signing an inadequate and injury prone player for the championship on an £800 grand 2 year deal?

We should have released him last summer

I like Waghorn as a player. His pressing is good, he has a good footballing brain - he's always looking for triangles, to pass and move and to play 1-2s, can strike a deadball well. Just don't think he's got the speed over 10 metres to trouble defences at this level any more. Like his 1 on 1 last week against Birmingham - was brilliant football to create the gap but his speed turned what looked like a 1 on 1 into a 40-60 in the keeper's favour.

i agree, but then again, i am not sure what Waghorn is on per week.

Hes not on £45K a week. I guess you’re being flippant. Top earner at the club around £15-18K a week I hear.

Waghorn may have had a poor season but to suggest he is the reason we are not in the playoffs I find unbelievable. Sure he may have contributed to it but so has everyone we win as a team we lose as a team.

Agree with this.
There have been times this season where if he still had pace, he'd be past the centre backs and through on goal, but he just can't do it and will pass it backwards or sideways instead.
He's still good on the ball and seems a good leader. Age and possibly getting covid have just removed all pace he might have had which is a shame
