on talksport, Everton fans hoping their team gets battered just to scupper Liverpool’s title challenge! Whilst we don’t have the rivalry to take a view, I just cannot see a position where I would ever want our team to lose?

Seems bizarre doesn’t it?

Does to us, but then like you say, we don't have that intense rivalry.

Equally I think they play them so surely that would be your opportunity to do ‘damage’ to their title hopes but probably realise they have little chance of winning that game!

I’d quite happily lose a meaningless end of season match if it meant Villa being relegated or stopping them being promoted.

Apart from that I guess if you were in a competition with a group stage and finishing 2nd offered an easier route forward you might be tempted. Would probably just end up getting knocked straight out by the ‘easy’ team though!

Yes. I would never be content with losing just to scupper a rival. The only thing it might do is give an upside to a defeat but that's it.

Discussed it earlier above but I think one is tactical and the other is just blind hatred. Maybe not difference to some of our fans taking great pleasure in the team being poor to get one over on SISU too!

Even then, as I posted at the time, I thought the attitude that it's ok to lose to get an 'easier' game in the next round is ridiculous. So it proved anyway.

It did work though as we avoided Brazil and got Sweden in the Quarters. We gave ourself the best chance of getting to the final and we almost did without playing very well all tournament.

Does nobody remember the Pompey fans at WBA on the last game of the season a few years back. Willing their team to lose so Southampton got relegated ! They duly lost 2-0 and celebrated wildly at the final whistle. One of the funniest crowd scenes I think I ever saw at a footy game.

Did this happen in time gone by or is it a modern Premier League-era construct? Like how I see grown men arguing on Facebook about how “you only beat *insert biggest rival* and you’re celebrating like you’ve won the league”. I don’t get it. It’s like a competition of who’s the best fan of the best club. People have said before that I don’t know anything about football because I support Cov, what does that even mean?

To be fair when people ask me "Do you support a football team" I always say "No, I support Coventry City".

We have LOADS of idiot fans on this forum that dont want us to win. Anyone who hopes never to get promoted to premier league is saying they would like us to lose enough games to avoid it

They are not cov fans imo, no fans out TV and £££ ahead of their love for the club to win every game imo
