What’s the bare minimum you expect from the new manager?

Given how tight points wise the teams from 11th downwards are at the minute i would be happy with a top half finish..... would have been happy with that had Mark Robins stayed in is job as well after the poor start we've had to be perfectly honest.

Guessing the reason doug sacked robins this early into the season is so that the new manager has enough time to get us play offs at least, be very surprised if we don’t add in January, push on 2nd half of the season, for me if we don’t get at least play offs, then it’s been the wrong decision,

I’ve voted playoffs but there would be some leniency in there. If the playoff points total was abnormally high (don’t think it will be) or if we’re still in contention at 44 games but don’t quite make it, that’d suffice. The idea that we should just be aiming for a top half finish lacks ambition.

Also worth noting I wasn’t expecting us to be relegated, or even be in a relegation battle come the new year. The point is that this squad should be battling up the other end of the table. We can’t afford to tread water, lose players at the end of the season and then have to go through the whole ‘rebuild’ phase again.

The expectation has to be play offs. That is the target Robins had. That is why he’s gone. I fear we’re now moving to an early 80’s / early 00’s model of a manager a year. That saw us in L2.
That expectation was over a full season with a squad and formation Robis had trained. We are now 1/3rd through the season and miles behind the top 6. Expectations therefore can alter.

If there’s no improvement I would. It’s a numbers game finding the right fit now. No sense in holding on for another 18 months and spending millions in the hope of a turnaround.

Statistically, if a manager doesn’t get at least 8 points from their first 8 games then they will never turn things round. If we end up in that mess then pull the trigger sharpish.

By miles you mean 3 wins

At this point I’d be happy with a top half finish but next season I’d expect what we were expecting this season and start with a bang and by within the playoff positions all of next season.

74 points is generally the minimum that will reliably get you into the playoffs. That's just over 1.6 points a game. I'd hope the new manager to average that for the remainder of the season which would give us 65/66 points and we'd probably finish around 10th.

To be realistic it’s not 3 wins though is it. It would be 3 wins if you expected no one above us to win any games at all over that period.

Also with our defensive record as it is and these next couple of fixtures coming up we will need a while to chalk up them 3 wins.

You're right but I imagine if we won 3 games straight we'd be within 3 or 4 points based on average ppg

Considering the expectations that were given to MR. We should be playoffs, anything less should be seen as a massive failure.

Given it’s a new manager who will likely implement a few new things and new players, I would give them some time for this to work.

Top half this season, playoffs next as a minimum would be my level of expectation.

Agreed and obviously I hope we do but I think the reality at this moment in time with how we’ve been playing is we are more looking at making sure we aren’t looking over our shoulders than looking up.
I’d have said the same even if robins was still in charge. To me my expectations changed when we left ourselves short in summer. I’m hoping we might be a bit more active than Jan than previous years through necessity but I won’t hold my breath.

I think if a new manager can come in and bed in a style of football that makes the most of the squad’s talent and has us consistently performing at a level that would get us into the playoffs on a full-season basis, then that would be a marked improvement over the past 12 months, even if it probably wouldn’t be enough to make the top 6 this season. Not sure why I should be unhappy with that.

I think a general barometer of the fanbase is good too but suspect those that didn’t want robins gone will have higher expectations of a replacement.
I would have said the opposite. I had high expectations because of Robins. If it is a 'Lampard' let's just concentrate on staying up. I'm not being negative there. Just lowering expectations.
Doug sacking Robins has allowed people to create a romanticized version of future events if Robins had stayed.
Based on many years of previous experience. There is a reason the fans of other clubs sh@t themselves after we thumped Boro. The stats were good, the goals are starting to come - no one other than a few flakey Coventry fans had us finishing bottom half.

Promotion or what's the point? Could have had mid table safety with Robins. Anything 7th or below and the new appointment should be sacked.
We're 15 games in and our points total is relegation form. The new manager presumably won't have a time machine back to August, so that is a ridiculous statement.

How can our points tally be relegation form if we're 17th ? It's not static every season

We are 8 points off the playoffs.
That’s a lot after 15 games.
Our current ppg doesn't relegate you most seasons.. we are 17th and 8 points off bloody 6th get a grip
Maybe not but it’s equivalent to about 20th place.

Anyway, the point is that to get playoffs now we’d have to average autos form for the rest of the season. That’s unrealistic.

The season is still very much alive with plenty of games left, which is why I thought the trigger was pulled too hastily on Mark Robins after all he has achieved.

I don't think it will matter what the fans expectations are - I think it will be delivering Kings expectations. I think this ends King's honeymoon period at the club and he is about to find out how difficult it can be chasing success in football.

Be interesting what the Robins Out crew will come up with.

If they didn't expect anything less than play offs with Robins then they can't seriously expect anything less with their new man.

In fact, we should be surpassing what we expected Robins to achieve this season as the new guy should be "better" than what we had.

Yeah, I agree with you both, and did genuinely believe that Robins would drag us into the playoff mix at some point but Cam's key point here was that we shouldn't be sacking the new manager for finishing 7th given that would be playoff form over the course of a full season. I get Nanolimp's "what's the point" but it's done now. Sacking a manager that finished 7th would be exceptionally harsh.

We should be challenging for the play offs though.

Sacking a manager who has never had a bad season is harsher. “That’s football”

Whoever it is has been brought in for instant success. If they aren’t better than the last seven years then they’ve failed.

Did you even read his post?

It would take a very good run of form to get us to that stage and getting a new manager in and likely new systems / new players could disrupt things slightly. Also, it may have the opposite effect. No guarantees.

I’ll be giving the new guy a bit of time; that level of patience worked with the last guy…
