Any other free transfers you could recommend to Thorn? And/Or bargains? As the money from Bigi is blatantly going to be re-invested in the squad ;) and if so, what position do we need now after signing a defender/midfielder, attacking midfielder and a striker?

Tope Obadeyi is out of contract. Heard from a reliable source he could be the next Pelè.

Lots of players on the pfa website out of contract and decent.

I wonder if Bigi had gone earlier on, would we have got Norwood. I'd have been pretty chuffed with losing Bigi getting Norwood and still having 500k left over.

If we were to lose Keogh I'd love to see us make a move for Fitz Hall. 31 so still good for a few years and is a pretty solid centre back. Worried he may be a little too good for us but would be worth a go.

It's difficult to pick out players because there are names I'd love us to go for but they're all good enough for the Championship still. Left-Back Andrew Taylor would have been a great addition.

I expect Keogh to be sold. in terms of new signings sisu have finished. The only players we may get now will be loans!!!

Nothing wrong with loans as long as they are not short term and better than we can sign for free.

Dont be silly Torch in thinking that we will get enough loans in. Also was that the year they paid us 3-4 million for Dann and also spent 5 million on Roger Johnson. ( that is called investing in the team ! ).
We have lost from an already depleted squad-
Clingan
Cranie
Bigi
Platt
Mcpake
expect to lose Keogh and Thomas.

Yes we have got three players in but there is a bit of a quality and numbers gulf.

Do you still think we could be promoted?

Clingan, Cranie and platt were offered new deals as has Keogh. Mcpake played 5 games last year and wanted out.

As were Stoke to the premiership.

Stoke's loans consisted of proven premier league players and internationals like Diao and Ameobi - in fact they paid £500k loan fee for ameobi and paid all of his wages. Oh and they also spend nearly £5m on players like shawcross (£2m) Leon court (£1.2m), glen whelen (£500k) Danny Pugh(£500k), etc

The initial question raised was regarding the working of loans and 2 illustrations of such strategies have been supplied. Also it's the division up.

The other day I raised the issue of Peterborough and you said ther added 20 players to the squad. The same data source I assume suggested 30 were released. Do you concur and also that 80% of the outgoing fees were not spent on new talent?

No they weren't. Yes they had muamba, larsson and bendtner great loan signings but they also spent a lot of money.

Sheff £4m (top scorer and assists)
Jerome £3m
Vine £2.5m
Jaidi £2m
Stephen Kelly £750k
Neil £500k

They also signed Larsson permanently for £1m in the January

Do you not think things have changed then?

Yes players leave but that's not new we have had 40 odd years of players leaving we are Coventry City, the sad thing is the Board last summer lost the fans, something Fisher is slowly trying to get back!!

so far we have signed 3 players who will make a difference in this league, 5 or 6 more like them we will be in the promotion hunt, we will also get 2 or 3 new gems from the academy Willis and Roberts will be in that mix!

No idea - it doesn't say how many players were released, they also didn't lose their best players (Boyd and CMS).

My point was that league one teams actually sign a lot of players and are constantly inproving/revamping their squads - In a way they have a lot more 'spending power' than we have. We signed less players than any other team in the championship and didn't improve our squad at all last year.

Think we still need a target man, 2 pacey forwards, right winger, left winger, defensive midfielder, 2 x centre backs, Then a couple more players to supplement the squad.

£2m of that is 3 players, and in fact only two players - McLean and Batt went to better sides. No one left for free to an equivalent or better side, so they got as much value as they could. And they replaced the majority of them with better players - e.g Tomlin, McCann, as well as keeping their two best players and top goalscorers (Boyd and CMS)

I'm sure had the incompetent owner hadn't let King, Gunnar, Westwood, Cranie and Clingan's contract expire and leave for nothing our spend to income ratio would be a lot higher. The fact in the last 12 months we have lost £6-7m+ worth of players go for free and have either not replaced them or have brought in lower quality players

How could they stop the contracts expiring? Westwood wanted free agent status. Even if the club had managed to sell him they would have been lambasted for not letting him go on a free as they are now with Keogh. What would you do if someone will not negotiate?
King was a gift for a season purely due to boothroyd.
Gunnarson again was never going to sign his agent was looking for pastures new.
Clingan? When did he last sign a contract extension with an existing club?

The difference is you and ii know Keogh is for sale regardless of signing or not ,We will sell whoever is of value.

Edit ;Like Turner.
