COVENTRY City missed out on another of their prime targets yesterday as the club’s transfer embargo sabotaged manager Andy Thorn’s rebuilding plans for the second time in the space of a few days.
Having seen Bradford midfielder David Syers sign up for Doncaster Rovers on Friday, Thorn suffered a fresh and even bigger blow when Shrewsbury striker James Collins opted to join Swindon Town.
It was a particularly depressing setback because Cov Kid Collins was keen on joining the club he supported as a schoolboy and still holds dear to him.
And supporters will be alarmed at the Sky Blues’ inability to compete for free-transfer prospects while owners Sisu stall on confirming a budget, leaving City in trading limbo.
The former City Academy player, who made his name with 16 goals to help Shrewsbury gain promotion from League Two last season, is understood to have been Thorn’s top striking target to spearhead his team’s attack alongside Cody McDonald.
It is understood that up until last week he was all set to sign for his boyhood club but despite assurances that the club were coming out of their transfer embargo, Collins couldn’t wait any longer and opted to join Paolo Di Canio, who also announced the signing of 17-goal Andy Williams from Yeovil and winger Gary Roberts from Huddersfield at a press conference yesterday afternoon.
Sigh. It shows that we really are between a rock and a hard place. There will be nobody left by time transfer embargo gets lifted if it gets lifted. Best of luck to him at swindon. Cant blame a lad for putting his future first and working with paulo Di Canio seems more attractive than working with Andrew Thorn.
I seem to be the only that couldn't care less about us trying to sign yet more lower league nobodys,we tried that in the championship, look where it got us. Yes i know were skint blah blah. If only shitsu would spend some of the millions that they've got for the stadium eh.
Experienced championship players yes. Are we serious about getting out of this league or not? We've tried flooding the team with players from the league below before. It doesn't work. Put it this way,if we were a championship team going for promotion to the prem would you fill squad with players from league 1? We're not getting out of this league for years,if ever imo, well not with these scumbags in charge.
If we couldn't afford Championship players whilst we were in the Championship how are we supposed to afford them in Div3?
We can't and on this I agree with you. Players like McSheffrey, Bell, Baker, Cameron, Wood, Hussey, Clark will all do very well in this league. We definately need new strikers but people should spend some time analysing some squads in this league, they look very poor to me.
A bit like when we came down from the prem and thought the squads in the championship were poor? Now look wherw we are.

And i mentioned that if we ever get it lifted we will have no players to pick up. Whats your point? I realise he wanted to play for us but you cant wait around for ever.
Classic,
So the whole article is about how our owners stalling on getting us out of a transfer embargo has led to us losing a player who wanted to come to us.
You make the above comment.
Perhaps the club will have to have some open trial days at Ryton - anyone with a pair of boots who fancies a go and doesn't want paying more than the minimum wage can turn up and AT will pick the best 15 or so to complete the squad for the new season

I have no confidence in the likes of bell, baker, mcsheffrey etc. If anything i think theyll be even worse thinking they're to good for this league. I have no faith in sisu to pay for any new player or bring any in on free's whatsoever and i have no faith in thorn we would under normal circumstances be lucky to get a job managing a sunday pub team.
If some of these teams look very poor to you, what will that make us when we get beat by some of these very poor teams.
Surely no-one really believes this is going to be a stroll in the park, even if AT is given money?
Remember going down from the prem, people saying we will be back next year etc, well 10 years of struggling and under achieving we finally get relegated again, 10 years time of under achieving will we be saying the same again?
