Transfer Rumour Confirmed - Bradley Collins (2 Viewers)

A lot has been made of Collins ability with the ball at his feet. Wonder if this is inkeeping with the assumed change of tactics. We often played the ball long from Wilson, usually for Gyokeres to feed off scraps and create something for himself which he was superb at.
Maybe this signing offers a small clue into a more keep ball swing and playing out from the back which we have played previously under MR.

Robins often berated Wilson during games and looked frustrated

I don’t think it’s change of tactics wilson just can’t play out - nowadays keepers are expected to be an extra defender

I would say on form an upgrade on Moore who seemed to lose the plot after a great first season. We need continuous improvement in every position and his signing makes us stronger. Wilson's shirt to lose. Can he save pens?

Tell you what, it’s absolutely mad the amount of people that are convinced Collins has come in as number 1 - people naming starting 11’s for Leicester on Twitter and he’s in goal.

What more did you want from Wilson last year?

hE HaD A SOliD DefENce in FrONT of HiM

He was superb. Will be starting v Leicester.

I think Collins is a slight improvement over what we have, and welcome competition, which Moore wasn't last season. Its good business from MR and I'm sure he will give Collins a chance to earn the no1 spot, and hopefully we'll see a couple of centrehalves and a right wingback this week too.

He’ll definitely start as number one but at least Collins provides more of a threat to his position than Moore does

Absolutely and I think that’s key. Keeps him on his toes. If we didn’t make play offs last year most of the blame could have been on Moore, lost us those games at the start of the season.

Superb is maybe pushing it for a lot of the season, but I'll agree that by the end he looked an actual goalkeeper, and I'd be perfectly happy with him starting the season.

Unless he goes elsewhere himself, of course...

there’s an argument that a defence plays better when they trust the goalkeeper.

that being said can anyone point to a game where Wilson won it for us? For me he was a competent keeper, that didn’t have much to do for the majority of his clean sheets

I expect Wilson to be No1 he deserves that much, but it doesn’t leave much margin for error

He was the 6th best keeper in the league on the xG stats.

Yeah nothing special but by the end, in a league of flawed keepers, he was solid while making the occasional top save to go with it.

Wilson's goal away at Blackburn not only salvaged a point for us but cost them 2 points that played a massive part in them missing out on a playoff place.
That result was absolutely massive for us.

But that’s not his goalkeeping is it?

And again that’s what I said - he was a competent keeper. He isn’t irreplaceable.

in terms of xG how much are we talking difference between top and bottom?

if Collins is better with the ball at his feet it is likely that Wilson will have to improve that area.

he isn’t like say Westwood, who pulled of a number of great saves.

Disagree HDW on this one - Ben made some fantastic saves last season.

Seems harsh to knock him considering his record last season.

18 goals between top and bottom, it's a huge difference.

On purely shotstopping he was statistically one of the best in the league.
I’m not saying he’s Lee Burge - I thought when the defence clicked, the defence was fantastic and a lot of those clean sheets were down to him being largely anonymous. We had something like 8th least shots on target against us

he’s also low statistically in the amount of passes he makes so as people have previously stated - we’re clearly looking to play out of the back more.

my argument is that he isn’t an extraordinary keeper to mitigate this fact. And again I expect him to be no1 and he deserves his chance to begin as no10

Could this move signal Wilson might be sold and that money reinvested elsewhere? He is the golden glove winner and it's hard to see his stock rising much higher than now? Seems well liked and played a part in our success so hope he stays.

With new confirmed signings, I often look at the fans reaction of the team we are buying the player from and it does on the whole seem like he will be missed by most Barnsley fans

No10? I know we're short on CAM's, but bit extreme don't you think? Although he did score more goals than O'hare last season, so I see where you're coming from.

I had that thought too. I did think we might have seen Wilson being the subject of gossip etc but there's been very little - even less about Moore. My guess is they'll save some wages if they can move Moore, being a senior pro, making the transfer cost neutral to a plus in that respect.

We needed another goalkeeper simple as that. Simon Moore will be moved on, id think Wilson will carry on from last season and Collins will have to wait his chance unless Mark Robins sees him as his better keeper.

More money wasted I’m afraid. He looked poor against Wimbledon and in one of the pre season games.
Then that’s a shocker if we spent the reported figure and he’s not going to be our long term goalkeeper.

It does feel like the signings of him, Da Silva, Palmer, Kane etc. doesn’t go far beyond being ex Chelsea youth

I would say Collins deserves a go but if he does drop Wilson think that’s it for him. So hard to return as a goalkeeper after being dropped. Ask Moore, Marosi etc.

The 'Chelsea kids' transfer policy feels like a bunch of mates being half-cut in a boozer talking about a lad at school who was awesome at footy & can't work out why he's not at Real Madrid!

Wilson went the bulk of 2021/22 and the very beginning of last season second fiddle to Moore to be fair

I’m surprised Collins hasn’t played yet. Another one signed as he once was seen at Stamford Bridge
