I must say the nostalgia for the post war Broadgate is bizarre. Even with the greenery it looked the epitome of dreadful socialist architecture. Not a patch on the beautiful city it replaced.

That's true but how many of us remember what came before it? I had never even heard of Smithford Street until a few years ago. (For the uninitiated it followed a line roughly where the upper and lower precincts are today).

Remember the women from the parsons nose with the mole on her face ? When I was younger I always thought it was gonna fall in me chips, she was lovely though , and think it was her son who used to write the chips super fast

The parsons nose
The chess board that was outside the library
Davies sport shop
The courtyard pub
The toy shop that's where the library is now(it might not have been by the library actually)
Not wishing to be picky, but the chess board was outside Davies's sports shop. Also, the toy shop next door to the Locarno (now the library) was Barnabys.
Just sayin' like. ;)

There used to be so many record stores in town. I used to get the bus in on a Saturday morning go round them all, then off to Fishy Moores. After that a walk up to HR calling in at Hits and Misses on the way.
Wondered how long it would be before my old shop was mentioned! ;)

I have something like 920 pics of old Cov. If there's something anyone wants to see, let me know and I'll see if I've got something. Also got around 280 pics of Cov pubs (past & present). I know, I'm a saddo, but it's a part of history!

If we are talking about shops that are missed, how about Owen Owen (bought most of my shirts there in the 60's since my Mum worked there and I got a discount), C&A (good clothing shop), Woolworths, Davies (bought all my badminton racquets there), Swifts (all my Dinky toys), Halfords (anything for my bike), Frettons (my Lambretta scooter). Many other good stores were in the city centre in the 60's/70's.

I can't think of a butchers named Botterill, but a bit of research done and I've found a Botterills butcher that used to be in Bedworth, but we're talking early 20th century.

Interesting also to see Barnbys' old location shown on the map. Here it is in 1953, you can just about make out the name above the windows:

Looks like that was taken from the spire of St John's church at the bottom of Hill St. I remember the No 5 & 6 buses used to travel up and down Hill St, before the ring road cut it off. I used to walk down there from my house in Holyhead Rd into town.

The irony is coventry hasn't changed enough. It's still looks like a uk version of Stalingrad.

Pig in the middle on Far Gosford St on the way to Highfield Rd for a pork, stuffing and apple sauce batch, going back on the way home and waiting for The Pink to arrive in the newsagent next door, anyone remember the name of the sports shop near the rocket that only used to let 2 in at a time?
