And there's a lesson for Coventry football.

I remember playing against Valley Sports in the Rugby & District League.

They were a very well run, ambitious club. I had the impression, at that time, that the old Rugby Town were not well run despite being in a much higher league. I even thought at the time that VS would overtake them.

Well Rugby Town folded and VS flourished ......

As I recall it this was the main reason Town folded. I was born in Rugby and used to watch Town on odd occasions at Bilton Road. The Co-op owned the land at the time (may still do so for all I know) and decided they wanted it back to develop it. If you look at it now, many, many years later, it's still a patch of grass with footy posts on it (unless it's changed in the last year or two). Bloody shame.

I always thought that the land is owned by RBC and it's the council who closed the original Rugby town down to develop the land for housing? No wait, couldn't of been. Every council except Coventry's bend over backwards for the local football team.

Big difference between giving housing priority over a football team to giving it to an out of town rugby franchise.

Secondly, that was my understanding too... although before my time so is just talking to fans, like.

Hardly, I watched a football game there back in the 1960's. It was a Coventry XI vs a Rest of the League XI. Might have been a testimonial. I forget the details, Football has been played there many times in the past.

But it wasn't the same stadium back in the 1960s, was it? In the 1960s the pitch was inside the cycle track and there was a tiny single stand.

Also, earlier this year the council was seeking to prevent professional football being played at The Butts. Now a team that is aspiring to be a professional football team is to play there.

That's what I thought. The Co-op Funeral Home was just to the side of it (opposite side from the grandstand) back then too, so it all adds up. Didn't know they'd since fenced it off though. Very sad.

No, far from it. I was at that charity match too (we'd moved to Cov by then). Wasn't up to much as a ground IIRC. Nice enough now though, and if, as Jon Sharp keeps telling us, the facilities are to be improved, it should be an excellent 8-10000 capacity facility with covered stands on both sides in a few years (if done as he describes). Unlike the previous two owners, Sharpy seems to be a man of his word, so i'm quite looking forward to seeing how it pans out.

Well whatever the reasons for Rugby Town's demise my point was that a team much more junior in the football hierarchy has overtaken them and indeed taken their place,

I don't want to see that happen to CCFC whatever objections we might have to the current owners, but I think there are some who would welcome it

I don't think any plan that included the BPA should be considered credible to be honest.

this was touted for half way through next year
the butts was offered to united in the first season they were started, but was declined by united

with all the non info streaming out, it would seem construction at masseys ground has slowed and the butts is a stopgap

If the Butts works for them financially they'd be mad to persist with a ground on the edge of town.

I may be wrong, but as I understand it, Persimmon own the land and as part of the planning permission had to build a new pavilion and pitch (pitches?), there's some info online that suggests that AGCO agreed to lease it from Persimmon, as Persimmon were reluctant to commit to the build cost before getting someone else to take on the management, but it is quite old, so maybe this has changed.

As others have said they have apparently since discovered a huge cable (elec I think) that wasn't on any drawings, and serves most of that side of Cov, and they are trying to figure out what to do.

If its Persimmon I wouldn't be holding my breath that it will ever happen. They are probably doing their upmost to get out of it and the cable could be their perfect excuse - too expensive to work around.

They're in non league division 5 at the Moment which has about 20leagues through the country at same level.
They'll go into a larger regional league spread over 6 leagues.
They'll need a nice shiny coach next year I would imagine.
If Im honest this year they won't go up, they need more investment / Fans etc, and they're already 14 points off top after 7 games. They need a real revival if they want to go up

I think this season will be a stutter while they get their act together, they just recruited Ben Mackey (ex CCFC) from Leamington and they already have Kevin Thornton (ex CCFC and Nandos) on the books, I still reckon they'll finish in the top 5 or 6. The policy seems to be to pull in a few players of higher standard than the league to be able to push for promotion, it requires funding but that is the owners choice. At some point the cost will outstrip their resources but I imagine they have a plan to handle that situation.

FYI Non league tier 5 is League tier 9 and city are in tier 3.
