The notion that the EU is about to give the UK whatever it wants (as was claimed on here and by a few MPs) due to the German car industry, is even more laughable.

No one thinks that. Stop making it up. Simple economics tell you brexit will get a good deal. It will be a free trade deal and this benefits the EU just as much as UK. Common sense is the phrase.

Exactly. They will build up alternative
You're going to be in for a shock. Believe it or not, but there are plenty of other markets for them to tap into.

Like where that fine the profit mark up in the uk which is hugely more than anywhere else in Europe?

We've had fm Italian family move in over the road. Spoke to them today for the first time. Lol poor old sick boy will be spitting buckets if he hears what they said and their primary driver for moving here.

The import of German cars isn't a binary situation. Its not going to be situation where imports are banned. At worst the price will increase due to import tariffs. That will impact them but only by leading to a decrease in sales, the way some people are talking you'd think they'll never sell a car here again.

And of course that assumes that the import tariffs aren't offset by changes in the exchange rate and / or there aren't changes to prices that can be made by the manufacturers. German cars costs way more here than they do in other EU countries, so they have room to play with if we impose tariffs.

You also have to consider we're not dealing with one industry in isolation. If we go hard on car imports we'll get hit somewhere in return, most likely the service sector.

At the end of the day the EU aren't going to allow us to be in a situation where we're better off leaving than staying, if they did that the whole thing would collapse. Best we can hope for is a Norway type agreement where we keep paying in to get access to the single market and accept freedom of movement. Essentially we'd be in the same position as now expect we won't get a say in anything.

Simple economics. We make billions from financial services largely generated by the City of London. The banks start moving various departments to EU countries. We have less income. The fruit pickers leave. Either the wages rise, or more likely noone wants to do hard work in the fields. Food prices rise. Spending power falls. People do less trade with the UK. The demand for the pound falls. We have Inflation. There are customs formalities to complete for our exports. Transport times increase and tariffs maybe imposed. EU importers look elsewhere. Demand for U.K. products falls, unemployment rises. Plenty more examples of simple economics which point to Brexit ruining the country. I don't think your mate Farage will be getting a knighthood any time soon. What I can't understand, is that his fellow leavers, bullshit Boris and we don't need experts Gove are still in the cabinet. Seems like incompetent May likes to reward incompetence. She won't make the full term as leader of the Tories.

If the profit margin is so high, then they can absorb the tariffs and still make a profit here whilst turning there attention to building up new markets. In the end they will be better off than now. Your new Italian neighbours will still be able to afford German cars.

So much so that they haven't tapped into them yet? Oh right.

I repeat we are their biggest and most profitable market in the world. It's very simple.

Not quite true. We're the biggest by volume but cash in the bank we're second to the US. China are third and growing fast and set to pass us as it's an ever expanding market where as we're pretty much at saturation point.

The EU and China are also getting closer and better trade deals with new initiatives given that the EU is China's biggest trading partner and China is set to overtake the US as the EU's.

I presume that you subjected them to your scapegoating, anti-EU rant?

I've never once said that Italy, especially the south is without economic problems. I'm surprised that they have been able to move opposite someone how regularly boasts about their wealth though.

However, we will most certainly be better off over there though and not paying £1000 a month to a buy to let landlord and earning similar wages. It'll also be good to get away from those scapegoating the likes of my family and partner for moving to the country.

We are now looking to move across in March 2018 though due to personal circumstances in the UK.

Strange that that status was achieved despite being in the EUSSR. Oh well, it won't be long until people's buying power is taken away.

Anyway, landed in Verona last night and off to Liguria for a week. Luckily the greedy capitalist socialist state has removed data roaming charges. :D

The Sainsbury's boss has told shoppers that because of Brexit we can all expect higher prices, less choice and poorer quality.

I can't wait and am salivating at the prospect.

Stop complaining and think of Britain as you tuck into your chlorine washed chicken and GM vegetables!

You haven't got a clue. You're advocating they want tariffs and cut into their profit margins? Anyway back to the real world.

Just we are their highest profit margin market in the world. Nothing major for them I'm being told as there are other markets in the world that they haven't tapped into yet and they want tariffs on their cars. Phew.

The fact that you still believe Britain 'can have its cakes and eat it' says it all.

The thing is the industry leaders of the German car producers have said they will give us no assistance and it's still not believed. Even if they did want to give us special treatment it only takes 1 vote from somewhere like Lithuania to scupper the whole thing as the whole 27 have to agree on the deal. We are not going to get favourable terms and are going to end up worse of because of this. The longer it goes on the more apparent how much of a mistake it is.

Are we bigger than the rest of the EU market combined (genuine question)?

Except we're not. We're the highest by volume but not profit. That's the US. We're also likely to be relegated to third by China before too long as it's an emerging market for the German car manufacturers.

In the real world they may not have a choice if they want to protect their market share in the UK.

Sadly, some people would rather see the country and its people suffer rather than admit the whole thing is a huge mistake. It seems that it's a price worth paying not to hear foreign languages on trains and in the street.

Hi Mr Cable. Still want to reverse the result?

That's just childish. Have a reasoned debate rather than we are all racists. It's weak.

I don't know the answer but It's not the point either way. The point is German car companies sell and make a lot of money in the UK. That's the point.
It is exactly the point, according to your logic they won't upset their biggest market. If their biggest market is the EU rather than the UK, who won't they upset?

There are a lot of barking mad statements on here.

There is an argument for leaving the EU, but it certainly ain't the one thrown around by the more prolific posters on this thread, unless the argument is that Britannia rules the waves, is Great, and the world should bow down and marvel at her glory!
