Mocking ISIS = a hate crime? (29 Viewers)

Yes, that's right. Edinburgh University has accused a law student of committing a hate crime because he ridiculed ISIS on social media. They claim that his words could be construed as being offensive to Muslims.

The regressives on the left are always telling us that ISIS has nothing to do with Islam. So how can the mocking of ISIS be considered as offensive to Muslims?

Edinburgh law student Robbie Travers who ridiculed Isis is accused of hate crime

Hmmmm.

Now a scout about this chap shows himself to be a bit of a self-publicist who's renowned for inflammatory views on all kinds of subjects. Opinionated enough for Trump to block him on twitter, it seems ;) He's had others report him to the police for other things in the past.

So... I'd kind of agree with chiefdave's analysis. Given his volume of provocative posts, it's probably not as simple for the university as simply dismissing a complaint from a student. If they did... they'd be accused of a whitewash (as it were!). If, however, it is as reported... he'll be cleared.

But it suits his M.O. to get as much publicity for this as possible... which he's done very well.

This culture of censoring strong opinions is a threat to free speech. Slippery slope.

Seems it’s bollocks spun up by a media hound of a student.

From the uni:

We are committed to providing an environment in which all members of the university community treat each other with dignity and respect and our code of student conduct sets out clear expectations of behaviour. We can confirm that complaints alleging misconduct have been received against Mr Travers and these are being investigated. It is, however, untrue to suggest that Mr Travers is ‘under investigation’ for ‘mocking ISIS’.

This culture of censoring strong opinions is a threat to free speech. Slippery slope.

I’m a free speech zealot, but the law of the land includes hate speech I’m afraid.

It was a hugely regressive step to make it a 'hate crime' to criticise religions, particularly a religion which actually advocates killing others for not believing.

Hey, like I say, personally I don’t think words should ever be a crime, but I also think drugs should be legal, doesn’t mean I’ll start crying when a dealer gets sent down.

Also, blasphemy has been a law for longer than either of us has been alive, it’s not a recent development.

And all religions advocate killing others, that’s what medieval ideology was like.

Bible:

You shall not sacrifice to the Lord your God an ox or a sheep in which is a blemish, any defect whatever, for that is an abomination to the Lord your God. “If there is found among you, within any of your towns that the Lord your God is giving you, a man or woman who does what is evil in the sight of the Lord your God, in transgressing his covenant, and has gone and served other gods and worshiped them, or the sun or the moon or any of the host of heaven, which I have forbidden, and it is told you and you hear of it, then you shall inquire diligently, and if it is true and certain that such an abomination has been done in Israel, then you shall bring out to your gates that man or woman who has done this evil thing, and you shall stone that man or woman to death with stones

Talmud:

A heathen who studies the Torah deserves death, for it is written, Moses commanded us a law for an inheritance; it is our inheritance, not theirs. Then why is this not included in the Noachian laws? -- On the reading morasha [an inheritance] he steals it; on the reading me'orasah [betrothed], he is guilty as one who violates a betrothed maiden, who is stoned. An objection is raised: R. Meir used to say. Whence do we know that even a heathen who studies the Torah is as a High Priest? From the verse, [Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments:] which, if man do, he shall live in them. Priests, Levites, and Israelites are not mentioned, but men: hence thou mayest learn that even a heathen who studies the Torah is as a High Priest! -- That refers to their own seven laws.

Don't think so. Maybe Abrahamic religions do, does Buddhism, Sikhism, Bahá'íism, Zoroastrianism or Confucianism do so?

Its only a matter of time before the police will be able to tell what you are thinking.
Then it will become a crime to even think certain things.
The next step after that will be to alter everyone's brain so they cannot think certain things.

Thing is, he hasn't been censored yet...

No, he's merely been threatened with investigation for a hate crime. For most people such a threat would effectively be the same as censorship as they would be afraid to say the same thing again. Yes, we know how the regressive left operates.

Well, so far the only knowledge we have is his version of events, which the university denies is why they're investigating him.

Would you rather if people made complaints they weren't listened to? Perhaps if it were a Muslim advocating suicide missions against students that, too, should be ignored?

If he's done nothing wrong he'll be vindicated, and it'll give the political career he so dearly aspires to a massive shot in the arm.

(Worth noting, incidentally, that this chap claims to be left in his beliefs... so as long as we're not tarring all 'left' with the same brush, as happens an awful lot around here.)

Why are you trying to move away from the agenda you muesli eating do-gooder?!!
So we can conclude:

He was not investigated for mocking ISIS;
Edinburgh University have confirmed they would not investigate anybody for mocking ISIS;
He was cleared of any wrongdoing in this investigation anyway.

But no, far better for some ridiculous media whore to whip up a controversy that's salivated over by righties, where it fits their agenda of opposition and confrontation, doing far more damage to equal rights movements and, for that matter, any fight against extremism.

I don't know if Buddhism advocates killing those practicing other religions but it's followers in Burma certainly do.

The way the media are telling us about Burma is outright lies. They are literally painting one side of the story because it suits their muslims as victims agenda.

In reality if you do some digging you'll see the Buddists there have frankly had enough and are effectively fighting back. One of my really good friends lives in Yangon and I got the full historical analysis from him a few days ago.

For the record he's German and actually about as much of a leftie as you, so I promise I'm not making this up! :)

makes me laugh when you call me a leftie, I'm a small c capitalist, think it probably tells us how far to the right you are!
So are you going to enlighten us as to what's really going on? It sounds like he is contradicting the UN reports so would be interested to hear what he's saying.

Perhaps he could tell us what's going on on another thread, so that the Robbie Travers affair gets the attention it deserves ;)

Go and read up about it. The bile goes about as far as the BBC comment sections. If you go and read up about and come back here saying you still think the muslims are the innocent victims then you'd be outright lying.

It's totally ridiculous. Just because it's a country the media think no one really knows about, it seems a good oppurtunity to big up the muslims as victims. They started it and have pushed the normally very peaceful Buddists into militant action.

My views are quite conservative, some would say logical. To the left that basically means I'm literally hitler!

You seem to think the centre is the left too. I have been described as a socialist by posters on here which is absurd and shows how far to the right they are.

I think that's probably right. I would put you down as left, but no where near as some on here.

Anyone slightly right is described as Hitler usually though. It's a bit annoying in debates because it's a bit like playing the man instead of the ball.

my initial post highlighted that there is un Buddhist like behaviour going on in Burma after Captain Dart said it was a religion that didn't advocate killing, (which he was correct to say, just isn't the reality as with most religions), are you saying there isn't.
And I have read about it, the UN has described it as ethnic cleansing, you said your German mate who lived their had a different view. I asked you to tell us it.

No doubt the Rohingya deserve what is happening to them and they are both as bad as each other!

Your last paragraph is pretty much it in one.
