What's the possibility of us being at The Butts next season? (9 Viewers)

I don't get it. I take it everyone has changed their minds then.

When the Ricoh opened and there was a free look around open day everyone I bumped into were going 'Wow! It's stunning' 'brilliant' 'fantastic' etc. etc. Never saw anyone who said it wasn't a beautiful looking stadium.

So, can only assume people now don't like it only because it's never full and therefore lacks atmosphere.

Is there a thread somewhere about that first open day look around, Nick?

Must admit, I've been to most games at the Ricoh but still enjoyed standing against the ad boards at pre season friendlies and being close to the pitch.

I have loved the Ricoh from day one. Personally I don't see how people can dislike a stadium based on the fact that is soulless when empty.

Bet you could also say that about the Emirates and Old Trafford and Anfield etc.

Seemingly that seems to be the main issue with a lot of supporters.

Let's get back to the Championship and see how soulless it is then.

It still was when we were though

But as I have said eleventy billion times and one, we have only been on a downward spiral. We need to see past the ineptitude of the team in its turgid past and look at it from a perspective of prosperity.

I would happily put a bet on that if we go up this season and start doing well next, the place will be rocking.

We need to look past the endless abject failure that has gone before.

SISU have lowered expectation levels haven't they.

The Ricoh is shite. I can count on one hand the amount of times there's been anything above an average atmosphere there. It's in the arse end of nowhere. Pubs nearby are all shite. It's bland as fuck. No character. It's got a shite name. It's not fucking ours.

Is there a thread somewhere about that first open day look around, Nick? Am guessing it is pre SBT.

For me it's an identikit bowl and there is nothing going on around it to enhance the day out. That won't change whether there's 3,000 or 30,000 in it.

Having said that, I'd be over the moon to read tomorrow that we'd signed a long term deal to play there.

Nothing going on? Don't get that at all. A casino, a hotel, lots of shops, Subway, Greggs, Pizza Hut, Frankie and Benny's, Starbucks' Costa, Burger King, Chiquito and pubs just five minutes walk away.

there's not enough pubs. The service in the casino is poor and you can't get in if you've got a minor with you and the rest of the list are practically fast food chains.
It's not the easiest to get to either. Like I say, be happy for us to be there for good but I'll never love the place like I loved HR.

How many pubs were there by HR?

Two down Far Gosford St wasn't there. Then where? Two in Hillfields. Have I missed anywhere?

One in the middle of St Georges Road (about 10 mins from ground), a couple in Ball Hill

Gosford Street. The Hillfields pubs though they were diminishing in the end. Close to town. And not too much in a taxi from Earlsdon.

I appreciate not everyone considers a few hours in the Elastic/Forresters/Brewer/Vauxhall as a pre match treat!

There were 3 when we left HR but 5 at the turn of the century on FGS (Peacock, Beer Engine, Hertford, Hand & Heart and Gosford Arms) and the Hare & Hounds on Gulson Rd.

Added to that the Brewer, Binley Oak, Hastings, Old Ball, Stoke Con Club all within a shorter walk than any of the pubs on Longford Rd are to the Ricoh.

Also walkable into town. All in all a million times better than the Ricoh.

Whether we play there or not, they really should think about renaming the stadium. 'The Butts' is a terrible name.

Always thought it was a poorly designed stadium and even when busy it was never great at generating a great atmosphere.

Don’t understand how anyone can say there’s never a good atmosphere at the Ricoh. Maybe it has something to do with where you sit. Even during last seasons direness I can still pick a couple of games where the atmosphere was excellent even with limited numbers. The semi final was excellent, lost my voice for two days. And I don’t recall who it was against but IIRC it was our last home game before relegation was confirmed and there was a 15-20 minutes spell in the second half of singing twist and shout but even before that the atmosphere was buzzing that day, at least where I sit it was anyway. If you don’t join in and sit in an area where no one else seems to it’s going to be shit and I can’t see how you can blame the stadium. Seems to me that you carry more blame than the stadium. It is what you make it.

Might have been Bristol Rovers?

I personally enjoy the Ricoh. It's a high standard stadium. Hosted the olympics also. It's wrong for us currently in league fregin 2 of course it is but no one can tell me wining games in the top end of league 1 or championship and obviously the premier league that place wouldn't be awesome regularly. Motorway links are great also.

When we play Newport at home in front of 6k yeah sure but that's like anywhere if say old traffrod or emirates was the same. It's too big for us but you can't question the design or purpose it was for.

I enjoy the shopping before at the retail park and plenty to do. I really enjoy it personally but fully accept not being ours and bad feeling around it mixed in with its too big currently it's not great.

But nowhere to park.

I never ever went to a pub before or after a game, so it has never, ever formed part of my matchday experience.

Do accept though that it is important for some.

I just go for the game and go home. Always have done.
Pretty well all modern stadiums are bowls. This maximizes the capacity but removes the sense of shape - the West End, the Kop etc etc.

It would surely have only been a matter of time before parking permits would have been issued around HR too I reckon and there are places to park. Think you are talking about free spaces.

Agree with all that, had similar thoughts at the time. However that was when we were a middling Championship team with aspirations of the Premier League.
The game changer for me was when the rug was pulled from under our feet. Not the move to Sixfields but the arrival of W*sps to a stadium that was built for us. And every time I go, it's the constant reminders that we are the second rate tenants. The first thing I see when rounding the corner from Rowleys Green Lane is the W*sps club shop, formerly the CCFC club shop and the hackles start to rise.
So whatever love I had for the Ricoh has long since gone I'm afraid - and it's nothing to do with low crowds or the lack of any atmosphere.

This can't be genuine? Why would a football fan care about any of that?

Whereas "Ricoh Arena" is fantastic. You can almost smell the history there.

Back to the OP and the prospect of playing at BPA next season, I don't think there's a cat in hells chance, apart from having to add to its 2 turnstiles and one Grandstand there's the retirement village next door just waiting to put its spoke in the wheel, was speaking to a chap a while back told me he is on their resident commitee or said he was and told me they are just waiting for any official announcement and they will be in court immediately objecting. That village is full of ex professional types, solicitors etc who might just show our owners a thing or two on how to batter people in court.

Funny how all these people hate the Ricoh.
Good job City never bought it then they would all be suicidal at the thought of our team being there forever.
PUSB.

It will never replace Highfiels Road for me.
But honestly moving to the Butts or out of town really is the final nail in the coffin of our great club:(

I hate it, but I'd still rather we owned it.

There are some people who will moan about anything and everything.
The Ricoh is a fine stadium, much better than HR(though I wished we never left there)
It is not the stadium that is the problem, it is the club.
From the issues at the first game til today everything has conspired against making the Ricoh a loved venue and I understand that but you can't tell me that It is a soulless stadium.
If you attended the Leeds, Birmingham, Wolves or Blackburn games then you know that the Ricoh can be vibrant.
