A theory is a hypothesis backed by evidence. Where’s the evidence for the spaceship “theory”?
Look at meaning 2:

noun, plural theories.

It doesn't matter how many times a supposed 'UFO sighting' is debunked by experts, 'believers' continue to cite it as 'proof of their existence'.
And it does not matter how carefully and how thoroughly a report is studied with no explanation being found, some people will still believe the witnesses must be mistaken, or it must be the planet Venus, or a reflection, dirt on the camera lens, or a model hanging by a wire, even though all those objections have been ruled out.

I think the problem is simply the distance between the stars. Space flight will only happen when it is commercially successful to do so.

With resources gradually getting less on Earth there will come a point in the future when we will go looking for resources. To turn a profit, you're looking at travel of only a few years. The asteroid belt between the inner and outer planets seems the best bet. To get beyond that, the jump in technology, distance and the time it will take may be just too vast for it to have any commercial viability.
