Well that was a throughly dreadful few overs from England! It’ll take some effort tomorrow to not be out this test after today abysmal showing!

After the morning session, I would have snapped your hands off if this total was given. Curran and Ali pulled us out of the fire but now our bowling attack needs to make an early dent on India.

Root has to be the worst captain since Botham and Gower I can only recall Boycott and his hilarious spell in the hot seat as being worse.

Dropped Curran for Root - made wrong call on the toss twice - he’s a disaster

Some players improve when given the captaincy others struggle with the burden Root is struggling and Kohli who has the weight of a whole country on his shoulders is thriving

Batting first was the right call, we just didn’t turn up

I don’t think it’s fair to compare someone like Kohli to anyone, the guy is a legend and not many about. The issue is that there isn’t an obvious captain in the team. I feel sorry for root, he seems out of his depth but equally Bayliss and Rampo need to take a large portion of responsibility here

Wonder if there is a captain in the making with young Curran.

Obviously we are looking at maybe 4 or 5 years down the line, but he seems have the right steel and leadership quality about him.

So much to do with tactics too of course, so we don't know yet whether he has that string to his bow, but he does seem to be made of the right stuff.

Alec Stewart said of him that he was the best 17 year old cricketer he had ever seen.

Got to think it was fear of batting 4th on a pitch that tends to take spin after 4-5 days.
Still think he was appointed as nobody else about at the time.

Good comeback from England and they might, just might end up with a lead.

Who on earth would have predicted that!!

195/8.

Incredible last wicket stand.
You have to admire how Pujara gets a single off the last ball of most overs to keep the strike.
I think he's shooting for a double century!

Well a slender lead for India which let’s face it is a great result, Ali on fire today! We really need to push on for a 400 plus 2nd innings.

type of batsman England are desperate for. Said it earlier you someone all these shotmakers can bat around.
Maybe not Tavare-like but someone who fights to protect their wicket.
Pujara playing himself in and gritting it out is possibly a match-winning effort no matter what their bowlers do.

Hildreth digging in again today, age not on his side but that sort of player (not a 3 though)

Edgbaston all over this test, would take England settling India 250 tbh! Looks easier to bat on the wicket, so England should be looking at 300 lead

Proper Test match from the lower middle order. Love it when batsmen have to work for their runs. Does show they have the ability to adapt when they put their minds to it.
Shame top order remains a disaster.
Squeeze out another 30 odd runs tomorrow and gives the bowlers a chance.

Barring another incredible last wicket stand, England should have this.
Still it's a little bit exciting that they just might make it.

terrific result.
can't work out whether it's 2 good sides (particularly bowling) restricting each other or 2 average sides competing :)

Kohli really is a very impressive cricketer as well as batsman with his open, generous and honest interviews after games.

Big credit to Ali & Curran! (Both to be dropped now?)

Surely they’ve got the chance of a free hit in the last test so best time to get Burns in for Jennings and maybe Pope for Bairstow (let him rest that finger?)
I’d be half tempted to leave Rashid out.
Bat Ali 3.
I’d even give one of Anderson or Broad a break and see what Porter can do.

Out of nick for sure but he’s a player we won’t realise how good he was til next years Ashes when we have 2 new openers opening for the 8th Test in a row between the Sri Lanka series and now!

Guess it means Jennings will stay for a little longer!

Burns should now come in as next cab off the rank, but openers not a helluva lot knocking on the door in county cricket!
