It was a loan from the EIB not state aid. Still unfortunate for Southampton and yes you could justifiably say it was an own goal for the EU and more specifically the U.K. but let’s call it what it was and not pretend it was something else.

So the EIB loaned money so that Tranny production could be moved from the UK to Turkey. If the BoE had loaned money so jobs could move from other EU countries to the UK it would be seen as state aid. But when it is the EU bank it is seen differently by yourself.

You’re trying to pretend that it was state aid, it wasn’t. It was a loan from the EIB that the U.K. is a shareholder in. It will be paid back with interest. Which the U.K. will be a recipient of even after brexit as we have long term commitments to the EIB. Little comfort to the former workers at Ford Southampton but that’s what happened. Ford Turkey wasn’t handed a load of cash from the EU as aid.

I doubt the average man in the street does...but MEPs will listen & consider & probably be influenced towards acceptance of his wishes.
Again highlighting that those answerable are so far removed from those the affect...the affected become disaffected & it all ends in tears. Just like countries, & huge global corporations...they all fall prey to the fate of complacency in the end.
In fact, let us be honest...although the UK economy has done well for a few generations, it was always going to be prey to cyclical changes & lose influence globally whether in or out of the EU!

Yes Tony...call it what you like...they gave them the money. They may get it back or write it off...or even the Turks may yet write it off. Had they given the money to the UK...maybe the transit would still be made here? But no, the appeal of an even wider EU was irresistable

Why don’t you talk about EIB finance for UK companies? Far more than a loan for a Turkish factory. Far more jobs created than lost.
Biggest fan of Turkish membership being BoJo. An economically strong Turkey as a partner, military and economic, is desirable, especially with the refugee situation and the instability in that region. Now that Erdogan and Trump are trying to prove who is the toughest, everybody loses. Apart from Putin of course.

Because of Brexit the investment of the EIB has dropped significantly in 2018. If you want to talk about job creation based on EIB loans, then leaving the EU is reducing job creation. 2,1 billion on projects in 2017 created more than those lost, only partly, because of the 80 million Turkey loan.

Turkey has been “joining” the EU for over 30 years now. They don’t meet the criteria and never will. The process was started to garner favour with Turkish voters by Turkish politicians. Turkey joining the EU is little more than a myth.
