to be honest I'd never heard of this Colston fella before today. But I've now found out he brought 84,000 slaves from Africa and 19,000 died en route. I do wonder why did we have a statue of a man like that up in the first place?

You're right. I suppose he must have pumped a lot of money into Bristol at some point.
But the fact is that if enough people had lobbied the authorities to remove this statue in the ensuing weeks and the council had agreed it would have been symbolic . It would have shown willingness to acknowledge that the statute represents oppression and insults a significant section of the population . As it is, that opportunity has now gone.
These people aren't going about this in the right way.

they've got a slavery museum up there. Apparently no holds barred acknowledgement of the citys part in the slave trade. I always meant to visit when I was working up there but never got round to it.

The most awkward is Glasgow becoming the second city of the empire from slavery while Scots were also claiming to be morally superior to their southern counterparts. Dundee as well, both cities voted for indy in 2014 despite having profited most from colonialism
