Any actions that reduce a potential risk for my child (and countless others) is a start for me - I know that this is going to be incredibly complicated and challenging for everyone. Their is still an absence of any kind of proper tracking setup in place, and basic measures like temperature checks aren’t even being made mandatory in schools so something to mitigate needs to there IMO.
Incidentally we have just been told by email this afternoon that masks are mandatory in our school for all communal areas for both staff and students, and that we are able to have visors for use in classroom so that students can still see our faces and mouths properly.

Morning all. I’ve avoided the thread of misery for a while (even though I do like a majority of the posters...the thread is just depressing !). Interesting development in France, especially as they’ve seen cases increase recently.
Hopefully a sign that we will be edging back to some kind of normality. Yes, there has been increases in confirmed cases cases around here and Europe recently (some of which will be attributed to increased testing in high outbreak areas), however, hospital admissions and deaths remain low. Fingers crossed it stays that way.
As many having been saying for a while, shield those most at risk, continue to take precautions, especially if around those most at risk (masks in crowded areas, wash hands etc), but otherwise we need to try to get back to some normality. So many of the decisions aren’t being made based on conclusive scientific evidence but on scientific calculated guesswork, which is understandable in a pandemic of a totally new disease/virus, so I hope Frances decision is correct (I believe it will be)
Ps and yes Williamson has got to go. It’s about time Johnson showed some leadership and got rid of some of the fuck ups (ministers such as Williamson and Hancock as well as senior management in civil service). Government and parts of the civil service (senior management, not front line) have been found sadly wanting through this shitstorm.

I don't think Boris will get rid of any of his crew, they are all yes men to him and toe his party line. All that is happening is that Cummings is getting his way by decimating the top of the civil service, these are people who have given their working lives to this country whatever party is in power and are now being made the scapegoats for all that has happened

If you did this though you'd have to get rid of pretty much the entire cabinet. Patel, Jenryck also would have to go. And once you start looking at how many of his appointments have been shite it points the finger at who appointed them and how good their judgement is.

As you say they're chosen for their loyalty. In fact pretty much every Tory that got returned is because they had that 'Brexit pledge' before the election which was really just a pledge of allegiance to Johnson (and his puppetmaster Cummings).
I'm not necessarily a fan of the civil service either but they're definitely being used as the scapegoats for massive ministerial failings.

Heaven help us if this was a virus that actually caused symptoms in everyone it infected and had a death rate above 1%. Take yesterday, over 1500 new cases (which means in reality more in the community), but 12 deaths. Yet an asymptomatic gentleman is taken off a plane by folks from Resident Evil

On a more upbeat note few of my company's (for 3 more months!) Plants are seeing upturns in orders from several car manufacturers. Hopefully that's a good sign.
Not to mention the furballs .

Doesn’t mean there’s still not a lot of shit there though Macca (like in the cabinet). I agree that ministers have to go if they don’t do their jobs well but nobody can tell me all of those top civil servants (many on massive salaries/packages) would have done a great job during the pandemic.
Also, it’s a bit naive to think they have ‘given their lives to this country‘....some top civil servants will be there for the cash etc, just like any other profession
Ps if Johnson just retains yes men/women in his cabinet he’s done as the quality isn’t there

OK - I kind of get that bit fair enough, but equally he knew he’d had a test... maybe just double check you were fine before getting on the plane.... I guess it depends if he went for a test because he had symptoms, or if he was asked randomly to do a home kit or something.

I get that, it's just that while we have a pretty good handle on deaths from a combination of confirmed Covid deaths and excess figures, the figure of who's had the virus is unknown but likely to be much higher than officially reported.

I squirm and my eyes roll when I hear colleagues in the civil service talk about improving the lives of end-users. Whilst there is a pride and satisfaction in providing good service, this service is rarely for the actual end-users themselves. I still find it difficult to measure whether they believe it or not. Me, I'm solely in it for the (relative) job security and pension.
Mr Slater gave his goodbyes in a live broadcast to the department yesterday. By all accounts a decent bloke, not that I've met him or have any interest in what top leadership say, beyond about pay and conditions.
We'd already been in receipt of the new 'prospectus' for the department - has the child genius's stamp all over it - everything is going to be done better through scientific and experimental ways of delivering.
Can't wait.
Two years off ST concessionary rates. Hopefully, the re-org and redundancy payoffs will be on their way round by then.
