143 deaths today. Not exactly weakening...

I'm thinking that now there are more cases again not only are people more likely to get it but they're likely to be exposed to it by more than one source, increasing the overall viral load and thus making it harder to fight off. Plus as it inevitably seeps back into those more vulnerable groups it's going to start going up more sharply in the coming weeks. I hope I'm wrong and we don't get to the levels before but I'm preparing for some potential horrible numbers in the coming weeks and months.

Who would set the agenda's here?

A good question. Just for starters I would look at the petitions for Govt and choose the one which increases Utility but des not come into conflict with ECHR.

This would be better then the Blair/Brown years straight away.

Where has this myth about Sunak being competent come from? It is an incredibly superficial. From what I can see he's got no original thought, just wedded to the same orthodoxy that saw the country in a mess before Covid.

Sunak is only seen as competent as he is compared to the other clowns in the cabinet. He's a lightweight. Sadly for the Tories they got rid of any one with an once of ability.

Do you think the shadow chancellor looks competent - she’s hardly Nigel Lawson or Gordon Brown and between Sunak and her I’d know who I’d choose

I read somewhere that deaths were increasing by 6% a day over last month. Very steady figure. Seems local lockdowns have done nothing to push this figure down but just try to hold the virus at bay for as long as possible.

In comparison to the PM and the rest of the cabinet it can’t be a difficult task to look competent.

This seems back to front to me. Shouldn't the numbers dictate what tier an area is in, or at the very least shouldn't this be centrally controlled and not something thats up for discussion? Council's shouldn't be having to approach the government to be moved to the most suitable tier.

Clearly want to. Act sooner rather than later but as per any decision gets hate good bad or what ever just stupid fucking politics.

Disagree, it should always have been a local decision made locally. All central government should do is enable these decisions and provide resources for them to be enacted.

This is from the BBC a day ago.

"We're on track to have 100 deaths a day in next week or so, that's very much tracing some of those worst case scenarios, if the outbreak's increasing it doesn't bode well for November/December," said Dr Adam Kucharski, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the modelling group that feeds advice to Sage, told me.

Today (Tuesday), we had 143 deaths...

According to the statistics, the worst case scenarios involve the deaths of over 120 000

The person who chaired the report said:

"This is not a prediction - but it is a possibility.

"The modelling suggests that deaths could be higher with a new wave of Covid-19 this winter.

"But the risk of this happening could be reduced if we take action immediately."

I know a few weeks back this report was being followed slightly mocked by some people on Twiter filling out the difference between the predicted and actual information.

I'm going to have a look around Twitter to see if this information is still being done.

I can't find what I am looking for but it does look like Greater Manchester and Lancashire will be going into Level 3 Lockdown tomorrow (Wednesday) as well.

It does make it sound like the government is doing stuff whilst the virus is growing to a point where people are dropping like flies all over the country.

Oh for fuck sake Northern Ireland, close all non-essential businesses before closing schools. Bunch of right wing assholes.

Comical listening to Jenrick on LBC trying to explain what counts as a meal. Going to a pub and having a pasty and pint is out, going to the pub and having a pasty that comes with salad and a pint absolutely fine.

Does Starmer's proposal involve keeping universities, as well as schools, open? It just seems nonsensical to shut everything down, bar the two biggest transmitters!

tbf, schools seem the major centre of transmission.

If i can remember correctly it is estimated to be a 0.4 reduction in the R rate for schools closing.

The number for non-essential business is strangely missing from these lists but non-essential offices is 0.4 as well.

What they're doing is exactly what members of Sage were saying here in interviews over the summer. If you want to open schools something else will need to close to compensate. Of course that was ignored and we tried to open everything up and came up against another 'nobody could have predicted this' situation.
