Boris press conference at 5. Bound to be good news...
Seems a bit of a non event:

Playing down any problems at ports but then saying not to travel to ports.
500K have had their first jab, new variant will not change vaccine priority groups.
Any changes to tiers will be evidence based.
Social distancing more important than ever and people must follow the rules.
Schools to go back as planned with a staggered start.
And having previously said 'back to normal' by summer and then Christmas Johnson, is now saying Easter.

The difference is now we know how many vaccines we have and need to administer to those in vulnerable and essential categories. Simply do them as quickly as humanly possible until you cover enough people to nearly eliminate hospitalisations. So in theory they should have a much better idea of when that threshold will be met

I wonder if they’ll televise the charity event for the third world plague infested island floating off the coast of France. Will Bono release a charity single for us?

So many questions....

He was going to but JRM thinks it's outrageous and appaling and we don't need help, so he's Banned Aid.

Because we're not south Korea maybe?

Do you understand what benchmarking is?

You take someone else's position who has expertise and success at what you want to achieve and use it as a baseline for your own efforts, then look to improve on it.

Speaking of test and trace I see they're now reaching 92% of contacts. Not at all related to changing the counting method.
Test and Trace suddenly hits 92% of contacts after big change to counting method.

The privatised Test and Trace system is suddenly reaching 92% of coronavirus contacts after a major change to how the figures are counted.

The service, run by outsourcing giants Serco and Sitel, claimed to reach 92.7% of close contacts of people with coronavirus in the week to December 9.

They still get my respect for admitting publicly they're wrong and a few people resigning.
Over here they'd just get their mates in the media to try and put a positive spin on what a great job they'd done and send Farage and a daily mail photographer down to Dover to get some pictures of him pointing at dinghies
Yeah at least they own it

Always thought at the beginning of this there was no right answer, so our approach can't really be criticised either. What we haven't done is learned, or planned, or adapted...

Anyway, got a Tesco order(!) turning up today. Wonder how much of it will actually turn up...

You can't drill into someone's head ideas if they think there stupid, us and the US are the least obedient people in the world, we like to moan at everything rebel at everything, the one and only thing we could of took from them would of been track and trace but why when ours is fine?

Certainly worthy of further scrutiny as its now been more than a year since the virus appeared & no-one is closer than a best guess as to where it actually originated......

Prof Shi Zhengli may well welcome investigation of the lab, but clearly the Chinese Govt. do not, so I don't hold out much hope for any real discoveries by the WHO team....they'll only find what the Chinese state want them too.

So given they'd got previous experience with SARS etc and a system set up, why didn't we use it as a template for our own response instead of the route we took?

I agree SBD, there were definitively lessons that should’ve learned and incorporated into our planning. Pretty much the whole of western world has been caught out by this.

Apparently in the U.K. our pandemic preparedness was supposed to be better than most....prepared for what though ??? How the fuck didn’t we have a U.K. manufactured reserve PPE supply chain for example ??? Whilst austerity has impacted aspects such as lack of nurses - the profession could/should be far better supported and appreciated. That is just shocking planning !!! Also, when the shit hits the fan, additional decisions have to be made, in particular in relation to timing of implementation. If people haven’t watched it the programme on lockdown (SAGE etc) on bbc it is very interesting. There were fuck ups, simple as that. That coupled with returning patients to care homes from hospital in a panic to clear beds which just accentuated the situation.

The spread in Asia is interesting though, some even suggesting that exposure to previous corona virus may have provided elements of population with some level of immunity. In addition culturally, there are significant differences....certainly by in large that are far more obedient nations and differing requirements to privacy etc etc (which helped their tracking and tracing - apparently it was public knowledge where you had been !!!), all of which have major positive impacts in fighting the virus

Comparison of outcomes are therefore pretty irrelevant, however, that’s not to say there arent many elements of how they dealt with the pandemic which western society can learn from.

Ps Australia and NZ have done amazingly well but difficult to compare, especially NZ. Also, what would’ve happened if a vaccine wasn’t discovered ?! (assuming these ones work 🤞). You can’t keep yourselves pretty much cut off from the world forever which is how they have suppressed it
