I saw some talk about ring fencing the second jabs?

My doctors had been getting through 800-1000 people a day but they closed their vaccination service last weekend. They have said they have vaccines but are awaiting the go ahead from NHS England. Wonder if they're been held for second doses? Although if they are why not get on with them instead of enforcing the 12 week gap.

Yep and I don’t like leaving the maximum possible time in case the appointment can’t be kept

One of the scientific advisors was suggesting that some doses are held back specifically for second jabs while we know we have the stock

I assumed that would happen, especially considering we have less stock of the Pfizer vaccine.

They're trialling 'mix and match' vaccinations at the moment so that may help if successful.

I think staffing is a big issue as well, which is probably why we hit nearly 600k one day over the weekend when more vaccinators were available.

Still no data on the Pfizer one that 12 weeks is OK, I think (may be since I last checked, tend to get all my hideous news from this thread atm!!), so I guess you could argue, what's a week or two between friends?

Think there is data the Oxford one is OK at 12 but, as we see with other countries, I'll be happier once there's fairly uniform agreement that's the way to go.

That study that came out a few days ago went to 90 days, which is longer than 12 weeks.

The AZ one? That is still in preprint and needs to be reviewed.

Hadn’t realised we were talking about the Pfizer one. It’s a fair point, but lack of data is just that, you can’t assume either way and most of what I’ve seen generally is a longer break isn’t an issue. Manufacturers are always going to distance themselves from guidelines, they’re there as much to protect them as anyone else.

I’m happy enough with the strategy right now. It’s a risk, but a calculated one and we should know soon enough if it pays off.

I'd be happier if they could produce the science behind it but it really isn't there. The reports on the the Pfizer vaccine make a massive assumption that the level after 21 days won't drop by much without the booster at that point. They don't have this data though as they are looking at Israel were people are getting the booster at 21 days.

In principle it shouldn’t be much different as the mode of vaccination is the same ie expression of the spike protein. Though yes it would be nice to have confirmation

Well they could be taking a different route/stance and going younger first, which by definition could also prevent spread and protect the old that way?
Regards the mix/match study is interesting but if successful will be limited in delivery due to the logistical constraints-20 and-80 degree for delivery etc.

Yep. I appreciate I'm cautious on such things, but it makes me nervous when corners are cut, even if seemingly innocuous ones, as it makes me wonder where else they're being cut. Now, tbf, this seems to be led by the scientists (if Government were leading it, I would be VERY NERVOUS INDEED) but nonetheless, go through the procedures, even if accelerated.

Now, I hadn't even considered it before all the EU refusing to allow the Oxford vaccine to be used for political reasons gubbins on this thread but, of course, you could also claim that we've accelerated the process and cut corners so we can claim to be first, and claim a political victory of being one step ahead of the EU.

I'd rather not think that, nor the other, but I'll be a lot happier once there's pretty strong consensus across nations (for it's nations that are holding back, not trading blocs) that the data is all fine and dandy, and everyone's happy it shows what they expect and hope for it to show.

He has only just turned 30 but does have underlying health issues.

He was very surprised and didn’t think he would hear anything until around April.

Deaths are massively down today. Closer to 900. Cant remember seeing a number that low for a long time (ignoring lag days)

Hopefully this is the vaccine working.

Not related to any recent posts but, I was reading something earlier and I worry quite a lot about the gap between the rich and the poor widening massively after this whole pandemic.

Those with jobs for big companies that are able to work remotely continue to do so, and without the usual places to splash money away (pubs, bars, restaurants etc) they are probably saving a good chunk of change more (I know I am).

Those lucky enough to get 80% of their full time salary on furlough will be okay, but there are quite a lot who fall through the gaps. Zero hour contracts, or lower minimum hour contracts, those newly self employed, new business owners with loans and mortgages etc, must be fucked.

What can we do to help?

You wouldn’t expect such a large drop from vaccines surely? I’d have thought you’d see the effects gradually as we started vaccinating gradually and immunity builds gradually.

Might just be an outlier. Wait for three straight days maybe.
