Matt Godden is a lower league journeyman by these metrics but was successful in league 1

That’s a fair point. But also he was in his mid twenties when we signed him, not 31. And came with a better goal scoring record.

Did we sign him from Chelsea yes or no?

Dabo overseas lol. Hamer who we had to spend £1m on. Schmmeee has a weird obsession with the foreign signings so much so that he spent the whole of last season trying to convince everyone DaCosta was good. The reason we’ve had to shop abroad was because we couldn’t afford proven championship players

ADI worked with him for years tbf. Bit of difference signing someone performing well in a good league like Hamer to hilssner from like the German farmers league. Bet he couldn't believe his luck when he found out.

We signed him at a lower level. Point is he was on his way up. Waghorn was just released by a team that finished well below us. He’s coming off a poor season and we’re gambling on him coming good again.
Godden is 29 so only 2 years younger than Waghorn. Also Derby offered him a new contract so wasn’t released. He didn’t have a great season but no one at Derby did, doesn’t mean he’s a bad player

Did he go through the foreign player recruitment process?

Rose? Hamer? Say what you like about Jobello and Dacosta but both did a job for the team.

You’ve got Kasta and Hilßner though. Just like the domestic process has Bosma, Allassani, Brown, Ogogo…

How do you know we went through the foreign player recruitment process? People have posted numerous articles showing it was his link to Viveash that meant we signed him. Rose is not an overseas signing either and Jobello was a dud.

Rose!? You’re getting desperate. Must have scouted Waghorn from Rangers too.

Back with the DaCosta obsession again too

Sure. I’m sure Viveash just said “I saw this kid years ago sign him” and that was it.

Ogogo was a dud. Don’t sign players from the same division. Alassani was a dud, don’t sign players from lower leagues. Giles was a dud, don’t take Prem loans. We can all cherry pick to suit our arguments.

Waghorn is a journeyman. He holds the record for scoring for different clubs in the division.

Moore is a L1 keeper. His record at this level is worse than Wilson’s. I’m hoping the rumour were after another GK is true.

Who was I expecting? Same as previous seasons really, some young Prem castoffs (Sheaf/Györkeres) some up and coming lower league/foreign players, a couple of experienced frees. Just would rather have the experience at the back or in midfield or at least a big striker. If Moore had experience he’d be fine, but he’s barely played since his mid twenties. Concerned Waghorn did nothing in a poor Derby side last year and their general consensus is his best days are behind him and he’s not cheap.

I get where you're coming from but I think most of that is now because of the level we're now at. The closing off of some of the European markets has probably had a bigger impact than many realise & not just in taking players from there - it's put a premium on British talent to the point where a L2 striker for example becomes a very expensive gamble. We're a very small fish in a very large pond in the Championship &, as we've seen with Matty James, the reality is there's always a bigger fish.

I still think there's scope to add some younger players from the Premier League but they are likely to be loans & much later in the window as parent clubs make their minds up as to where a young player fits in to their current & future plans. This often involves recruiting their own players first & even tying the youngsters down to new contracts etc before agreeing to loan them out.

The other thing, as MR alluded to, you've got a lot of players really unsure on their value in the post Covid market right now. A lot of them may be hanging on thinking they might get a better offer (can't blame them for that) but will soon realise that the market is not now what it was.

We've had won semi success from our overseas signings and that is Hamer. Any other is you just kidding yourself. Of course there are going to be more domestic duds, we sign a lot more of them, and we signed Ogogo 3 years ago. Stop kidding yourself.

Maybe that’s why he did nothing as he was in such a poor side ? He still scored more than our top scorer tho didn’t he

He wasn’t an ‘up and coming’ player at 27 was he. He’d been a lower league journeyman

I didn’t say he was “up and coming” so not sure who you are quoting. I said he was on the way up as in he was moving up through the divisions. He hasn’t rattled around the same level for years which was the original point.

So Biamou was considered a player on the way up?

We signed Kasta two years ago and you’re still going on about him. So to be clear it’s only a “semi success[ful]” foreign signing if they are one of our best players and they had to travel over an ocean to get here. Any other provisos?

We have signed a player that overall has a decent record at this level. He’s an upgrade on most of our forwards. He didn’t have a great season last year but he didn’t score many less than our current forwards in a side that finished 11 points behind us. He gives us experience in this league which is what everyone was saying we were crying out for last season
