Grendel would no doubt posit himself as 'anti-Thorn' and has said the very minimum he expects this season is a top 6 finish. There is a bit of optimism on here, but I know feck all about the division we are in and only about how disappointing much of my life as a Cov fan has been. I have no idea, but I wanted tonight's line up to be competitive. They have not sounded that and it doesn't fill me with optimism.
No one can compare individual players in teams so you look at other factors so you look at other statistics deployed as measurements last season.
Bookmaker odds - this season no bookmaker has us anything less than 6th favourite. Last season we were one of the relegation candidates and this was cited as evidence the squad was doomed regardless.
Wages and revenue - we will be one of the biggest supported teams this season and will have one of the biggest wage bills. Some say these are key factors in gauging a teams success and are a greater influence than a manager. So success should be achieved on this measure.
Also of course we have the man with an eye for a player. The master talent spotter. Given no one in this league has signed a player for a fee this is a level playing field and as we have a premier league scout at the helm I expect to see huge benefit from him being allowed to bring in his own players.
No excuses are there?
