Because we’ve got 2 CMs and 2 STs out injured?

Although it looks like Godden is back which is good

But you can't keep bringing people in everytime a couple of players get injured.

You were also talking short term like a month? I will stick with that would be a waste of time as they wouldnt bed in. Better off giving a youngster a chance off the bench.

The view appears to be that Reid is some way from being ready for first team football. You can’t go into the season with one left back ….. Injuries, form, suspensions leave us exposed

Yeah I’d agree generally. Not sure Tavares or Howley are in the right place. I might be imagining it but I thought it used to be common practice to get older, better players for a month or two to cover injuries or help them get match fit. Maybe my memory is playing tricks. Seems a waste to get someone in for a year if they’re going to be fifth choice in a months time.

Don’t think that’s in the rules anymore I’m sure after the transfer window shuts that’s it for loans until the next one opens apart from emergency loans for goalkeepers.

also I believe Ian can play centre midfield so if needed the new lwb could come into the side and he could be moved across?

Yeah, sorry, start of the convo was me saying I wish the rules hadn’t changed.

I think part of the reason for the rule change was to prevent clubs bringing in established players from elsewhere (who needed game time etc) at the expense of youth. It can catch you out, but pushing teams to develop their own young players was a good move in my eyes. This is something which I would like to see a bit more from City. We haven't had many academy players break through to the first team in a while (have we?). The catch 22 with youth players is that they aren't often trusted to be able to come in a do a job, but they don't build that trust without game time.

Eccles was just breaking through when he got his injury but no other stand outs since McCallum that I can think of

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Its a real shame for Eccles, as he looks to have some quality. I guess Shipley did a job in league one, but doesn't look like he's pushed on enough

That’s part of us getting to the championship. Players need to be much better to get near the 1st team

That's true enough, but it's hard to know how much of it is purely down to them being "good enough" and how much is getting the right break at the right time. Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford (although obviously very highly thought of at their respective clubs) got their chances due to injury crises at their clubs. Not saying they wouldn't have made it otherwise, but who knows what would have happened. In a similar situation at Spurs under Jose, (who has a reputation for not utilising youth players) Troy Parrot, who is also highly though of by all accounts, didn't get a look in.

Parrot didn’t get a look in because he had Son and Kane and Moura ahead of him and had hardly enhanced his reputation whilst on loan.

I was talking about the period where they were all injured (Kane and Son were at least). But that is sort of my point, he didn't get the chance. There can be such fine margins in the top flight, a bit of luck, the right timing, a confidence boost at the right moment, can make a difference. I take the point that he didn't do that well elsewhere, but there are countless examples of that happening to excellent players (see Depay, De Bryune, Salah etc), but it was just an example.

I think some of this is the speed the club have progressed. Players likely to make it probably have either been poached (McCann) or just picked other clubs to start with. Hopefully we can stay up long enough to start attracting better talent now they’d be playing for a Champ club.

But then we have Gareth Southgate having no qualms or fear putting young teenage players into the England set-up and playing them in major games and it has to be said in the main successfully.

I reckon Robins would pick Foden ahead of Hamer, tbf

I am not objecting to a long term loan. I am objecting to the thought of bringing in players for a month to cover short term injuries.

Yep. Think the state of the club was a blessing in disguise for the likes of Shipley and Bayliss. They wouldn’t get a look in if they were coming through now. Shipleys just played his 150th game for the club.

@better days I know you get nagged a lot this time of the season, but have you heard anything new?
Nothing at all
I think Robins is reasonably happy with what he's got and doesn't want to be held to ransom or make any panic buys
He was talking about planning for the January window last week
But of course this may just be poker if we have actually got someone in mind where the player's club are holding out for more than we can afford
