Swansea fans weren’t very happy with Bidwell leaving who has played over 350 championship games in the last ten years and still only 28 can see the “is he a lwb” question but I see Todd Kane more as an attacking right back than a rwb maybe Robins is looking at a back four option in the future.

He did. They were the only side that I felt we couldn’t lay a glove on at home. They were able to play around us and create space and angles we couldn’t cope with. Still bitter about the offside goal though. It was only 2 metres!

He wasn’t, they play little triangles with players almost static and work the ball towards goal. He played exactly the same against us as he does for us. I hope he can adapt but at the moment he doesn’t really fit the team. It’s fine, a lot of new signings take a while to understand how we play. But the question was what are people not seeing and for me it’s that. He’s used to a possession team.

Swansea only went crazy on possession this since season Martin took over, that's not how they played under Cooper.

Are Jake Bidwell and Connor Roberts the best wing-back partnership outside the Premier League?

🥱 Yes yes everything that’s not stating who your favourite player is and how awesome we are is a meltdown. Sure buddy.

The commentary on Bidwell has been almost exclusively “not seen much yet but sure he’ll bed in”. Stop looking for things that aren’t there.

I could understand if he had been terrible so far but he's been fine. Not outstanding but not rubbish either.

Middlesbrough's biggest threat recently has been their right wingback Jones and he hardly had a kick, Bidwell played a role in that.

Eccles is getting a lot further forward than Bidwell. Whether Bidwell is just less adventurous, having to do more defending, or just still getting to grips with his responsibilities in this system, I don’t know. But I think MR will want him getting higher up the pitch, as we’re a lot more effective when we stretch the play.

Very rare you will see a team play 5 at the back and have both wing backs bombing, one usually sits and the other goes.

Go and look at the average player positions from our last few games: https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/17/Show/England-Coventry

That only shows back to Millwall at home, but in every game, each of our starting wing backs spend most of their time in the opposing team’s half, with one exception - Jake Bidwell.

Call me old fashioned but first of all I want our wing backs to be strong at defending and have very good positional sense - and then it's obviously a bonus if they are exceptional in attack.

How on earth anyone can rush to judgement after a couple of games - it's simply mind blowing.

Liverpool are an obvious exception amd that is while playing 4 at the back. I think it's one sits while the other goes. If it's only 1 going it becomes predictable

As said he is new and the end of Feb is a far more sensible time to make any judgements.

Our wing backs are the most productive attacking outlet we have. Without them we hardly create chances at all. Just look at how few assists the rest of our midfield has.

I’m not passing judgment on Bidwell, but it’s clear he’s not getting forward as much as the alternatives at LWB do. I expect that to change as he beds in, but I worry about how it affects us in the meantime.

I wouldn’t be surprised we go down that road both Kane & Bidwell are full backs rather than wing backs both can overlap and we know Todd can pass and delivers good crosses into the box I think Bidwell is a similar type of player. Does that mean a back four eventually time will tell.

That's reasonable SBT and I see your point - and I think you see what I'm saying as well!
And I do agree that our wing backs are key to our attack - although I've overall been very pleased with the last 3 performances. I'd like to see some more clear cut chances being made centrally by our midfield as well.
I hope we'll both be saying in 5-6 games time that Bidwell is a good addition to the squad.

Don't know SP; 3 at the back is a big part of how we have been set up for a few years now. Can't see Robins changing that except if we lose our LCB again.
We tried 4 at the back last season and looked awful but as you say with new personnel it's an option in certain games/situations.

I think that's on instruction though, with two new wingbacks maybe Robins wanted them to concentrate more on their defensive work,
Clearly Bidwell has made a couple of errors in that department as well but it's early days.

Maatsen would be my choice. His defensive “weakness” are over exaggerated and what he offers offensively far outweigh any defensive concerns.

He is an outlet at LWB and has the ability to make things happen.

That said, Bidwells championship pedigree is impressive and he’s been brought in on a decent salary for a reason. I’ve not been impressed so far, but I put that down to rustiness and being new to the team.

Bidwell and Kane have both been described as ‘solid’ which is fine, but if we have two solid WB’s, who aren’t willing to take defenders on and are fairly predictable, we become easier to play against and lose some dynamism.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see them rotated depending on the opposition. But my default is to play on the front foot and be attacking, hence my preference for Maatsen.

Bidwell obviously a lot more 'sensible' than Maatsen.

However, my preference is Maatsen because of how far he gets forward and the excitement factor.

Clearly I would be a poor football manager...

Looks slow to play LWB looks a flat 4 player but yes early days let’s see I’ll give him another 14 days that’s it
